Best of BS Opinion: Soggy dribbles in finance, films, and diplomacy
There's something oddly thrilling about playing football in the park when it's raining heavily. You know it's not the ideal setting as every pass splashes water, every dribble slows down as the ball skids unpredictably across the soggy grass. But somehow, the game goes on. Strategy shifts. You focus more. Every movement demands improvisation. The mess, the friction, and the lost grip, it all becomes part of the play. Today's writeups hint at something similar. Institutions, industries, and individuals navigating a slippery, waterlogged pitch — trying to dribble ahead, adjusting each move to the terrain beneath. Let's dive in. Take India's state finances. A Crisil report shows revenue bouncing back slightly, with GST and liquor excise pulling their weight, but petroleum taxes dragging like waterlogged boots. Despite the slip-and-slide, states have kept their fiscal balance mostly intact. Yet deeper puddles remain: heavy dependence on the Centre and a debt-to-GDP ratio still high, notes our first editorial. Reform now means finding better studs: tighter GST compliance, digital tax trails, and predictable federal transfers. The game is on, but the pitch is far from ideal. In cinema too, the ball's taking unexpected turns. Aamir Khan's move to YouTube's pay-per-view model isn't just disruptive, it's democratic, highlights our second editorial. It bypasses uneven theatre access and expensive OTT subscriptions, bringing big films to small screens at Rs 100 or less. But success here hinges on how well creators learn to play on mobile-first grounds, use AI dubbing, and price smartly. If they can adapt, this could be the rain-slick breakthrough the film industry didn't know it needed. Meanwhile, on the foreign policy field, R Jagannathan argues India must stop kicking the ball around passively. Modi's rapport with world leaders may look good in photo-ops, but it hasn't kept adversaries from pushing forward. As geopolitical puddles deepen (Ukraine, Gaza, China), India must build influence through strategy, not symbolism. Think of it as learning to pass not just wide, but wise. And in corporate India, the Tata Trusts have moved early to back N Chandrasekaran, like a captain handing the armband before kick-off, writes Nivedita Mookerji. This preemptive support is not just procedural, it's tactical, especially as Tata Sons faces decisions on shareholding exits and RBI-mandated listings. It's a slippery pitch, and Tata seems determined to control the midfield. Lastly, L aveesh Bhandari reviews A World in Flux: India's Economic Priorities. Essays in Honour of Shankar Acharya, a collection of essays honouring Dr Shankar Acharya, thinkers reflect on economic playbooks past and future. While celebrating Acharya's policy genius, the book, edited by Amita Batra and A K Bhattacharya, also challenges today's players to update their formations for a world where climate, inequality, and politics increasingly shape the economy.

Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda 's romantic film 'Saiyaara', directed by Mohit Suri , has enjoyed a blockbuster run at the Indian box office. After crossing the huge milestone of Rs 300 crore, the film is now seeing a drop in its third week. Saiyaara Movie Review A dream run faces a dip 'Saiyaara' opened with a bang and kept winning hearts week after week. But now, on its 19th day, the film has started to slow down. According to early estimates from Sacnilk, the film collected Rs 2.50 crore on its third Tuesday. Though this was slightly more than what it earned on Day 18 (Rs 2.35 crore), the signs of a fall in collections are clearly visible. The audience turnout increased steadily throughout the day, starting with 13.45% during the morning shows, rising to 22.45% in the afternoon, followed by 25.34% in the evening, and peaking at 31.96% during the night shows. Lulutox Undo His chemistry with Aneet Padda, the emotional storyline, and Mohit Suri's direction struck a chord with the audience. From its first day, 'Saiyaara' looked like a winner and it certainly delivered. New films bring fresh challenge As 'Saiyaara' enters its third week, fresh releases have begun to take away some of its shine. 'Mahavtar Narsimha', which released on 25 July, quickly picked up thanks to positive word of mouth. On Friday, 1 August, two more big films hit the cinemas, adding to the growing competition at the box office. 'Son Of Sardaar 2', starring Ajay Devgn and Mrunal Thakur , collected Rs 2.50 crore on Tuesday, taking its total to Rs 29.60 crore. Meanwhile, 'Dhadak 2', featuring Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri, earned Rs 1.60 crore on the same day, bringing its overall collection to Rs 14.35 crore. What's next for 'Saiyaara'? While 'Saiyaara' has had a record-breaking run, its performance in the coming days will decide how much higher it can go. With a total of over Rs 304 crore, it has already achieved something massive. The film now has limited time before the release of 'War 2' on 14 August, which stars Hrithik Roshan , Jr NTR, and Kiara Advani . That film has high expectations at the box office, so 'Saiyaara' will need to make the most of the days it has left.

'Son of Sardaar 2' box office collection Day 5: Ajay Devgn and Mrunal Thakur starrer sees steady growth; matches 'Saiyaara' collections on Tuesday
'Son of Sardaar 2' continued its steady run at the Indian box office on Tuesday, Day 5, showing modest growth despite competition from multiple releases. According to early estimates by Sacnilk, the Ajay Devgn-starrer earned approximately Rs 2.50 crore on its fifth day, pushing the film's total domestic collection to around Rs 29.60 crore. The film recorded an overall Hindi occupancy of 22.08% on Tuesday, with night shows drawing the highest footfalls at around 38%, indicating sustained interest from audiences. 'Son of Sardaar 2' had a promising start at the box office, earning Rs 7.25 crore on its opening day. The momentum continued into the weekend, with the film collecting Rs 8.25 crore on Day 2 and Rs 9.25 crore on Day 3, taking its first weekend total to Rs 24.75 crore nett. However, the film witnessed a sharp decline on its first Monday, earning just Rs 2.35 crore. The film has managed to hold its ground even in the face of fresh competition from 'Dhadak 2', which earned Rs 1.60 crore on the same day. Interestingly, 'Son of Sardaar 2' matched its Day 5 earnings with the ongoing box office hit 'Saiyaara', which also brought in Rs 2.50 crore on Tuesday, Day 19. However, it was the animated film, 'Mahavatar Narsimha' that continued to dominate the box office, pulling in an estimated Rs 7.75 crore on Day 12, putting it in a league of its own. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Featuring an ensemble cast including Mrunal Thakur , Ravi Kishan, Sanjay Mishra , Neeru Bajwa, Deepak Dobriyal, Chunky Pandey , Kubbra Sait, Vindu Dara Singh , Mukul Dev, and Ashwini Kalsekar alongside Devgn, the film comes 13 years after the release of 'Son of Sardaar', which was one of the highest-grossing films of Devgn's career.
