Fat jabs are blamed for shrinking supermarket sales: Shoppers buying less food as weight-loss medication stifles appetites

Daily Mail4 days ago

Fat jabs have hit grocery sales as demand for chocolate, crisps and biscuits is predicted to wane.
Supermarkets are selling fewer groceries thanks to an uptick in Brits taking weight-loss drugs including Wegovy and Mounjaro, according to market research firm Kantar.
Their research found that total grocery volumes fell by 0.4 per cent over the last four weeks compared to the same period last year. This was the first month this has happened this year so far.
The decline represents 'new territory' for food heavyweights as four in 100 households in Great Britain now include at least one user of Ozempic-style drugs, Kantar's head of retail and consumer insight, Fraser McKevitt said.
He added: 'That's almost twice as many as last year so while it's still pretty low, it's definitely a trend that the industry should keep an eye on as these drugs have the potential to steer choices at the till.
'Four in five of the users we surveyed say they plan to eat fewer chocolates and crisps, and nearly three quarters intend to cut back on biscuits.'
It comes as grocery inflation hit 4.7 per cent this month - thanks to rising prices on key items such as cocoa and steak. This is the highest level since February 2024.
Supermarkets in the US, where fat jabs first became popular a few years ago, have already seen an impact.
In 2023, Walmart said it had seen a 'slight pullback' in the amount people were purchasing due to the jabs.
In January, veteran fund manager Terry Smith dumped his stake in drinks giant Diageo arguing that the rise of drugs could hit demand for its products.
He warned that the drinks sector was 'in the early stages' of being hit by the rising popularity of weight-loss jabs.
Other companies to lose out at pharma giants' expense include WeightWatchers, which filed for bankruptcy earlier this year as it struggled to compete with obesity drugs.
The slip in grocery volumes is the biggest suggestion yet that Ozempic demand is resulting in Brits eating less.
Wegovy is taken as a weekly injection and tricks the body into thinking it is full. It is available on the NHS.
Sister drug Ozempic, which has the same key ingredient, has taken off in the US. Celebrities who have taken it include actress Amy Schumer and TV host Kelly Osbourne.
As of just this week, obese patients in England are now able to access jab Mounjaro for free, directly from their family doctor.
The weekly injection, also known as tirzepatide, is now on offer to around 220,000 people over the next three years under new NHS prescribing rules.
GPs can now prescribe the drug to patients with a BMI over 40-classed as severely obese-and at least four obesity-related health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea.
More than a million people are already using it via private clinics in the UK. This costs around £250 a month.

Keir Starmer says he was ‘distracted' by Middle East and Nato during welfare rebellion

Sir Keir Starmer has admitted his focus was on matters involving Nato and the Middle East while a rebellion over welfare cuts took hold of his party at home. The prime minister has faced a growing backbench rebellion over proposed disability benefits cuts. Some 126 Labour backbenchers have signed an amendment that would halt the Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment Bill in its tracks when it faces its first Commons hurdle on 1 July. Responding to questions about what went wrong during the difficult week, Sir Keir claimed full responsibility for the welfare U-turn. 'All these decisions are my decisions and I take ownership of them,' he told The Sunday Times. 'My rule of leadership is, when things go well you get the plaudits; when things don't go well you carry the can. I take responsibility for all the decisions made by this government. I do not talk about staff and I'd much prefer it if everybody else didn't.' He continued that this was due to his heavy concentration on foreign affairs instead of domestic matters, first at the G7 meeting in Canada and then a Nato summit in the Netherlands. He also had to deal with the US's strike on Iranian nuclear facilities. 'I'm putting this as context rather than excuse: I was heavily focused on what was happening with Nato and the Middle East all weekend,' he said. 'I turned my attention fully to it [the welfare bill] when I got back from Nato on Wednesday night. Obviously in the course of the early part of this week we were busy trying to make sure Nato was a success.' He added: 'From the moment I got back from the G7, I went straight into a Cobra meeting. My full attention really bore down on this on Thursday. At that point we were able to move relatively quickly.' The government's original package restricted PIP eligibility, the main disability payment in England, and cut the health-related element of Universal Credit in a bid to save £5bn a year by 2030. The government has offered Labour rebels a series of concessions in an effort to head off the prime minister's first major Commons defeat since coming to power, as discontent bubbles among backbenchers surrounding welfare cuts, but campaigners have warned that these concessions could continue to cause problems Instead, the PIP eligibility changes will be implemented in November 2026, applying to new claimants only, while the existing recipients of the health elements of Universal Credit will have their incomes protected in real terms. While lead rebel Dame Meg Hillier has accepted the prime minister's £1.5bn U-turn as a 'positive outcome', Sir Keir has been warned that his decision to protect existing benefits claimants from upcoming welfare cuts would only create a 'generational divide' as hundreds of charities and campaigners urged MPs to continue their opposition to the proposed cuts. Disability charity Mencap warned that the changes will create a 'generational divide in the quality of life for people with a learning disability'. Think tank the Resolution Foundation warned earlier this week that the prime minister's U-turns on benefit cuts and winter fuel payments have blown a £4.5bn hole in the public finances that will 'very likely' be filled by tax rises in the autumn Budget.

Supermarket issues urgent warning to shoppers not to eat popular sandwich filling which could contain PLASTIC

ALDI has issued an urgent warning to shoppers not to eat a popular sandwich filling as it could contain plastic. Shoppers at the bargain supermarket have been told that the food item is "unsafe to eat". The Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued a notice this afternoon that BM Foods Ltd is recalling its Chicken Cooked Meat Trimmings. Officials say the product should not be eaten as it could contain pieces of plastic and a risk of choking. The FSA said that notices would be put up in Aldi stores where the items are sold telling customers to return them. In the notice, the agency said the product contains "possible presence of pieces of plastic in the products which presents a choking hazard and makes them unsafe to eat. It added: "Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling these products. "These notices explain to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the products." They advise not to consume the product and to instead return it to your nearest Aldi store for a full refund. In response to the item being recalled, Aldi said: "As a precautionary measure, our supplier is recalling selected packs of Chicken Cooked Meat Trimmings because they may contain plastic. "Customers are asked to return this product to their nearest store, where a full refund will be given." The FSA issues Product Recall Information Notices to let consumers and local authorities know about any problems associated with food. In some case a 'Food Alert for Action' can be issued which details a specific action to be taken on behalf of consumers. It's not the only product to be recalled by Aldi recently either. The retail giants were forced to pull their Cuisine Baby Potatoes with Herbs and Butter this week as it could endanger allergy sufferers. And a popular sweet treat has also been urgently recalled from supermarket shelves this month after a labelling error. Your product recall rights Chief consumer reporter James Flanders reveals all you need to know. Product recalls are an important means of protecting consumers from dangerous goods. As a general rule, if a recall involves a branded product, the manufacturer would usually have lead responsibility for the recall action. But it's often left up to supermarkets to notify customers when products could put them at risk. If you are concerned about the safety of a product you own, always check the manufacturer's website to see if a safety notice has been issued. When it comes to appliances, rather than just food items, the onus is usually on you - the customer - to register the appliance with the manufacturer as if you don't there is no way of contacting you to tell you about a fault. If you become aware that an item you own has been recalled or has any safety noticed issued against it, make sure you follow the instructions given to you by the manufacturer. They should usually provide you with more information and a contact number on its safety notice. In some cases, the manufacturer might ask you to return the item for a full refund or arrange for the faulty product to be collected. You should not be charged for any recall work - such as a repair, replacement or collection of the recalled item.

Business secretary to meet with Lotus after reports it plans to scrap UK operations

The business secretary, Jonathan Reynolds, will hold talks with Lotus after the carmaker appeared to shelve plans to shut its UK operations. After reports that Chinese owner Geely was planning to stop manufacturing at the Hethel plant in Norfolk, putting 1,300 jobs at risk, Lotus issued a statement saying it had 'no plans' to close the factory. Reynolds will speak to the company on Sunday, the PA news agency understands. The British sportscar brand has been majority-owned by Chinese multinational Geely since 2017. The Financial Times had reported it was considering shutting up shop in the UK in favour of a new plant in the US. On Saturday, Lotus sought to assuage concerns with a statement that it remains 'committed' to the UK, which it called its largest commercial market in Europe and the 'heart' of the brand. 'Lotus Cars is continuing normal operations, and there are no plans to close the factory,' it said. 'We are actively exploring strategic options to enhance efficiency and ensure global competitiveness in the evolving market. 'We have invested significantly in R&D and operations in the UK over the past six years. Lotus remains committed to the UK, and its customers, employees, dealers, suppliers, as well as its proud British heritage.' A government spokesperson said: 'The government does not comment on speculation or the commercial affairs of private companies.'
