Insider reveals what really happened in the Steelers' George Pickens trade
Appearing on Fox Sports Radio last week, Caplan shared some interesting details on the two-month-old Pickens trade — including when the Steelers really decided it was time to part ways:
"[The Steelers] made a decision, at the end of the 2024 season, that they knew they were not going to extend George Pickens' contract," Caplan said. "There was no way this would work with Pickens, they felt. And they were going to move him for whatever they could get — the best they could get. And Dallas was very interested, and they made that work."
Caplan then argued that the 2025 NFL Draft's solid, but overall underwhelming, receiver class was a major reason behind Pittsburgh's decision to replace Pickens with DK Metcalf:
"They had to get somebody to replace Pickens, and they were not gonna wait for the draft," Caplan said. "By the way, the word around the league was: nice receiver draft, not great. And they felt like Metcalf was better than anyone in this draft, and they might be right about that, so they made this move."
There were rumors and reports that the Cowboys were interested in acquiring Pickens leading up to the 2025 NFL Draft — but as we all know, a trade wouldn't come to fruition until almost two weeks after the event's conclusion.
If the insight is accurate and the Steelers were truly set on trading Pickens after the 2024 season, the motivation to acquire Metcalf before the draft makes sense — but the move still didn't address the WR2 issues that plagued the team last year.

Buccaneers' New Pass Rusher Labeled 'Player to Root For'
Buccaneers' New Pass Rusher Labeled 'Player to Root For' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht had some things to work on this offseason with regard to the team's defense from a season ago. Advertisement The Bucs' defense struggled with pressure on the quarterback, in pass coverage and taking the ball away in 2024. Licht addressed the pass rush part of that by signing free agent Haason Reddick early in the offseason. Tom Blair named Reddick as the Bucs player that we should root for. "Reddick was quite the pass-rushing mercenary between 2020 and 2023, stacking up 50.5 sacks over four seasons with three different teams," Blair wrote. "That run came to a spectacular halt last season, with an ultimately fruitless pursuit of a better contract swallowing up most of his brief stay with the Jets. Now he's with the Bucs, a team on the upswing that also happens to roster a good number of likable players on feel-good career tracks. One thing they've missed since the Golden Age of Baker Mayfield commenced in 2023, however, is a consistent pass-rush presence on the edge; Shaq Barrett was the last Tampa player to tally more than 7.5 sacks in a season, back when he posted 10 in 2021. Advertisement "Reddick can restore his reputation as one of the NFL's preeminent QB-chasers-for-hire while keeping Mayfield, Mike Evans, Todd Bowles and Co. relevant in our lives as football fans, and that would be a win-win as far as I'm concerned." Licht got Reddick on the cheap this year and it's with a good reason, as CBS Sports' Garrett Podell described. "A contract dispute with the Philadelphia Eagles that turned into a trade to theNew York Jets last season derailed Reddick's production," Podell wrote. "His holdout led to him not making his Jets debut in 2024 until Week 8, and he only registered one sack in New York's final 10 games of the season. That chipped away at the 30-year-old's ability to command a multiyear deal in free agency this offseason, which is why he settled for a one-year, $14 million deal with $12 million fully guaranteed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "There's certainly a chance Reddick could return to stardom with a regular offseason in Tampa Bay this year. NFC West LT rankings: Trent Williams remains class of division
The 49ers' Trent Williams remains No. 1. Where does Paris Johnson land this year? We are in the final stretch of the NFL offseason as the Arizona Cardinals open training camp on July 22. Leading up to then, as we have for several offseasons, go through the players and position groups in the NFC West and rank them. Next up, we look at the left tackles for the Arizona Cardinals, Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks and rank them. NFL left tackle rankings: NFC West 1. Trent Williams, San Francisco 49ers Williams, despite missing seven games last season and now turning 37 years old this month, he is still considered one of the top tackles in the NFL. Coaches, scouts and executives voted him the No. 4 tackle in the league. He is likely going to be the No. 1 tackle in the division until he retires. 2. Paris Johnson, Arizona Cardinals Johnson had a solid rookie season in 2023 as the Cardinals' right tackle and moved over to the left side in 2024. He was good, although his play declined slightly in the second half of the season and he missed the final three games with a knee injury. He is healthy and appears ready to be a Pro Bowl-level tackle. He even got top-10 votes from coaches, scouts and execs. 3. Charles Cross, Seattle Seahawks Cross is the best part of the questionable Seahawks offensive line, and is is solid. he has been Seattle's starting left tackle since he was drafted ninth overall in 2022. The next step for Cross, like Johnson, is to get recognized as one of the better tackles. He is just a bit behind Johnson. 4. Alaric Jackson, Los Angeles Rams Jackson is no slouch but he is clearly the caboose of the division. He is likely to miss at least the start of the season, as he has blood clots in his leg for the second time. In the meantime, former Cardinals left tackle D.J. Humphries will likely play in his spot, and he would fall to No. 4 in these rankings, too. 49ers' Christian McCaffrey and model Olivia Culpo welcome first child: ‘A love like no other'
San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey and former Miss Universe Olivia Culpo announced Sunday the birth of their first child — and revealed her name. The couple announced the news in a joint Instagram post with a simple caption: 'Colette Annalisa McCaffrey' and a white heart emoji. The post included black-and-white photos of McCaffrey and Culpo in a hospital room, with their newborn in their arms. The couple, who didn't disclose where the baby was born, announced in March that they were expecting their first child. McCaffrey, 29, and Culpo, 33, started dating in 2019 and married in June 2024. In addition to the post, Culpo shared on her Instagram story a photo of McCaffrey gazing at their baby in the hospital. 'Colette is so lucky to have the best daddy in the world,' Culpo wrote. 'A love like no other.' The model and actress also shared a photo of herself holding onto McCaffrey's arm during their daughter's birth. 'The scariest and most rewarding of all experiences,' she wrote. 'As soon as he came into the room I felt most at peace. Look at the grip.' The news comes as the 2025 NFL preseason kicks off next month. McCaffrey is looking to rebound after injuries that cut his season short. The 49ers, who lost to the Chiefs in overtime during the Super Bowl in February 2024, missed the playoffs last season.
