Auburn finishes first three rounds of match play atop leaderboard at NCAA Championships
The Auburn Tigers put on another spectacular showcase on Sunday, finishing 2-under par to overtake the Arizona State Sun Devils for first place on the NCAA National Championships Group Play leaderboard. The Tigers led the pack of 15 programs that moved on to Monday's round, and barring a historic collapse, will qualify for the Quarterfinal Match Play beginning on Tuesday.
Led by senior Carson Bacha's 3-under par round of 69, the Tigers finished the first three days of group play at 10-under par. Auburn was the only group to end the first 54 holes with a double-digit under par score. Arizona State (-6), Oklahoma (-3), and Florida (-1), were the only other programs to finish under par through the first three days. Last year's National Runner-Up, Florida State (+9), finished in seventh place overall, putting the Seminoles in danger of missing Monday's final top eight cut.
Along with Bacha's 3-under par 69, sophomore Jackson Koivun (-1) and Brendan Valdes (E) put together solid rounds. Although Valdes didn't feature his best performance on Sunday, the senior's round was good enough for him to hold onto the team 54 hole lead at 5 strokes under par. Koivun finished one stroke back of the senior with a 4-under par, putting both players in the top seven overall on the individual leadboard.
While the No. 1 ranked Tigers reaching the Match Play Quarterfinal Round is all-but a foregone conclusion, Auburn will still hope to remain at the top of the leaderboard after Monday to give themselves the best first round matchup possible. The Tigers final round of group play tees off with freshman Cayden Pope beggining play at 2:20 PM CST. Coverage of the final round can be viewed on GOLF Channel starting at 5 PM CST.

Indiana Fever release Caitlin Clark injury report vs Phoenix Mercury
The Indiana Fever released their injury report for their Wednesday night contest against the Phoenix Mercury. As expected, it doesn't carry the news that Fever fans or Iowa fans were hoping for. Indiana star point guard Caitlin Clark has been ruled out against the Phoenix Mercury with a right groin injury per the Indy Star's Chloe Peterson. Clark's injury absence against the Mercury now makes it 14 regular season games that Clark has missed this season and 15 games overall, including the WNBA Commissioner's Cup final. This latest injury spell has now cost Clark five games. The 6-foot guard exited in the final minute of Indiana's 85-77 win over the Connecticut Sun on July 15 and hasn't played since. Clark's latest injury absence also included missing the 3-Point Contest and the WNBA All-Star Game in which she was one of the two team captains. It's been a season marred and derailed by injury ailments dating back to the preseason. Clark missed the Fever's opening preseason contest with a left leg injury. Then, a left quadriceps strain cost Clark five games from May 28-June 10. That was followed up by a left groin injury that sidelined Clark for four regular season games and the WNBA Commissioner's Cup final from June 26-July 5. The Indiana Fever released an official statement on Clark's injury status and on her recovery last Thursday, July 24. "Caitlin Clark underwent further medical evaluations earlier this week, which confirmed that no additional injuries or damage were discovered. "Clark will continue working with the medical team on her recovery and rehabilitation, with the priority on her long-term health and well-being. There is no timetable available for her return," the Fever's statement read. Clark is averaging 16.5 points, 8.8 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game on 36.7% field goal shooting and 27.9% 3-point accuracy. 'I was comfortable last year': Texas A&M QB discusses OC Collin Klein's scheme
Texas A&M's 2025 season officially began on Tuesday afternoon, as head coach Mike Elko, alongside starting quarterback Marcel Reed, left tackle Trey Zuhn III, and linebacker Scooby Williams, spoke to the media ahead of the first fall practice session on Wednesday afternoon. Reed, who looked as confident as we've seen him over the last two years, had plenty to say about his own progress and what he expects from OC Collin Klein this season. Texas A&M's 2024 offense, which dealt with the loss of star running back Le'Veon Moss at the end of the year, forcing Marcel Reed to become a drop-back passer, was not the primary reason for the Aggies' 1-4 slide to end the season. However, a portion of the fan base blamed Collin Klein, feeling that his late-season play calling lacked creativity, despite finishing the year averaging 30 points per game. Judging coordinators when teams falter late in the year is a popular exercise, but it was Texas A&M's poor defensive showing, shown in droves during the Aggies' 4 OT loss to Auburn on the road, that constantly put the offense behind the sticks. Still, that was Reed's best game from the pocket, showing an ability to layer his passes and his receiver in stride. With more experience and offseason work to improve the technical aspects of his game, Reed briefly stated that Klein's offense has not changed much, and based on his comfort level in the scheme, this is good news for a player entering his first full season as the starter. "I was comfortable last year. We haven't done too much to change it. With the talent we have, receiver-wise, we've altered some of the routes." Altering routes makes perfect sense after the addition of KC Concepcion and Mario Craver at wide receiver, whose combined quickness and route-running skill sets will allow Reed to get the ball out faster based on their ability to separate in coverage. Again, this quote has already upset some of the fan base, who feel Klein needed to make significant changes to the passing game, but any issues last season mainly had to do with a lack of speed and overall talent in the wide receiver room. "It's good that we had a whole spring this year to do it after a foundation year last year. We're really excited going into this year with this offense. It's going to be very explosive." Time will tell just how "explosive" Texas A&M's 2025 offense will be, as great talent comes with higher expectations, but it certainly is a positive development that Marcel Reed is highly confident in Collin Klein's scheme. Cleveland blows 9th-inning lead, loses 10th consecutive game
CLEVELAND — What's the worst thing to see after a month of being arguably the worst offense in baseball? Arguably the best starting pitcher on the mound would be pretty high up on the list. The Guardians are last in the majors in runs scored over the last month, they're on a nine-game losing streak and they've been shut out five times during that stretch — and now they'll face Tarik Skubal and the Detroit Tigers on July 6 at Progressive Field. Follow along here for live score updates, analysis and highlights from the Guardians-Tigers game on July 6. Tigers beat the Guardians The Guardians have lost to the Tigers 7-2. Their losing streak has reached 10 games. Considering the circumstances, this is without question the most back-breaking loss of Cleveland's season thus far. Cade Smith leaves game after being hit with a comebacker And now Cade Smith is leaving the game after being hit with a comebacker. He walked off under his own power. Tiger crush Cade Smith for six-run 10th inning In a pretty stunning inning, the Tigers have knocked around Cade Smith for six runs. After Trey Sweeney's three-run home run, Riley Greene added another home run to put the Tigers up 7-1, completely stunning Progressive Field. In the top of the ninth, the Guardians were one strike away from a shutout win, and they're now trailing 7-1 in the 10th. Trey Sweeney hits 3-run home run off Cade Smith in 10th inning The Tigers have a 4-1 lead in the 10th. The visiting dugout is going wild, the home dugout is dejected. With Cade Smith on the mound, Javy Baez blooped a single to right field to put runners on the corners (including the free runner). Trey Sweeney, a left-handed hitter, then sliced a three-run home run off the left-field foul pole for a home run, giving the Tigers their first lead of the day in the 10th inning. This would feel like a back-breaking loss for the Guardians if they can't recover. Guardians, Tigers going to extra innings The Guardians nearly won it in the top of the ninth, and they nearly won it in the bottom of the ninth, but this game is going to extra innings. Angel Martinez opened the bottom of the ninth with a double to right field to put the potential winning run in scoring position. Nolan Jones and Bo Naylor, collectively, could only move him to third. With two outs, Daniel Schneemann lined a ball to the left side, but it was caught by Javier Baez. The Guardians and Tigers head to the 10th tied 1-1. Cade Smith is entering the game. Tigers tie it in the 9th on a wild pitch by Emmanuel Clase The Guardians were one strike away from snapping their nine-game losing streak and beating Tarik Skubal and the Tigers — and then it quite literally slipped through their fingers, in a way. Emmanuel Clase, in the top of the ninth, put the tying run on base via a hit-by-pitch. Pinch runner Zach McKinstry then stole second and moved to third on a grounder. With two outs and the tying run 90 feet away, Clase had two strikes on Parker Meadows looking to end the game, but a pitch in the dirt trickled behind catcher Bo Naylor, and McKinstry scored the tying run. Steven Kwan gives Guardians lead over Tigers in 8th inning The Guardians were able to get Tarik Skubal out of the game, and they've taken the lead in the eighth inning. Austin Hedges singled and was followed by Brayan Rocchio, who drew a walk against Tigers reliever Bailey Horn. That led to Steven Kwan, who ripped a double to right field to score the first run of the game and give the Guardians a 1-0 led. Kwan is 3-for-4 today. The Guardians pitching staff has put together another terrific day, and this time, Cleveland might be able to actually highlight it. Emmanuel Clase is warming in the bullpen. Hunter Gaddis pitches 6th inning; Tarik Skubal escapes jam as Guardians, Tigers still tied Hunter Gaddis pitched a quick seventh, and Tarik Skubal pitched around a double from Angel Martinez by striking out Johnathan Rodriguez to end the inning, and the Guardians and Tigers will go to the eighth inning with both teams still searching for the first run of the day. It feels like the the first team to score, wins. Skubal now has a 10-strikeout day with three hits allowed in even innings. It's his 13th double-digit strikeout game this season, which leads the majors. Tarik Skubal, Gavin Williams in a pitcher's duel; Guardians, Tigers scoreless through 6 innings Tarik Skubal and Gavin Williams have both been outstanding today, with each delivering six shutout innings. Williams walked three but allowed only one hit along with eight strikeouts, throwing 97 pitches. Hunter Gaddis is entering the game for the Guardians to open the seventh inning. Skubal has given up just two base runners all day (two singles). He's also struck out eight. Skubal, though, has been more efficient, only needing 78 pitches to get to the seventh inning. It's been a pitching masterclass from both starters. And the Guardians pitching staff continues to be excellent, the offense simply hasn't been there to make it count. Steven Kwan makes highlight reel catch while crashing into left-field wall Gavin Williams is through the third inning, in part thanks to Steven Kwan, who made a tremendous catch while hitting the left-field wall to rob Colt Keith of extra bases. Guardians, Tigers score: Gavin Williams, Tarik Skubal through 2 scoreless innings Tarik Skubal is through two hitless innings with two strikeouts. Gavin Williams has nearly matched up, only allowing a walk through his first two frames. Below is some pregame information.
