Records expected to be broken at 16th annual Grand Blue Mile
The Grand Blue Mile is part of the acclaimed Drake Relays, one of the most prestigious and historic track and field meets held every spring by Drake University. The relays were nicknamed America's Athletic Classic as a result of the range of participants. It was designed for everyone, from elite runners to families, and even walkers.
The relays kicked off last weekend with the Drake Road Races.
The Grand Blue Mile takes place on Tuesday in downtown Des Moines. The community fitness event was designed to promote wellness. The one-mile race has divisions for families, kids, recreational walkers and runners, and even elite athletes.

Drake University's Blake Boldon is the Franklin P. Johnson Director of the Drake Relays. He said around 3,000 people will participate in the 16th annual Grand Blue Mile. All participants receive a commemorative shirt and bib. Those who participated in the Drake Road Races as well can receive a Bulldog Double Medal.
New this year is Spike's Sprint. This is a new youth event for children between the ages of two and 10. The event was named after Drake's mascot, Spike the bulldog. Children will participate in an age-based sprint with varying distances based on age. Each participant receives a bib and a finisher giveaway, plus a front row seat in the Mascot Madness race.
In recent years, the Grand Blue Mile served as the USA Track & Field 1-Mile Championships. For the first time this year, the Grand Blue Mile will serve as a selection event for the 2025 World Road Running Championship.
The top two finishers in the men's race and the top two finishers in the women's race will be automatically selected to represent Team USA at the World Championships later this year.
'Growing up here in Central Iowa, it really is magical to see a National Championship just in the shadow of our skyline, right here in the heart of our city and in the center of our state come to life every spring. So, it means a lot, not just for me but for our entire community,' said Boldon.

Just feet away from the finish line is the Honorary World Record Way. This is located on 13th Street between Grand Avenue and Locust Street. The Des Moines City Council approved the World Record Way following the performances by Nikki Hiltz and Sam Prakel at the 2023 Grand Blue Mile. They were the first-ever world records in the road mile.
Organizers say they're expecting history to be made again this year.
'I'm going to make an early prediction that we'll see an American record here on the city streets of Des Moines tonight,' said Boldon.
Roads will be closed throughout Downtown Des Moines because of the Grand Blue Mile.
The closures start as early as 9 a.m. and go as late as 11 p.m. They are mainly between Grand Avenue and Locust Street, from as far east as 6th Avenue to as far west as 15th Street.
Aside from getting the chance to watch history take place, there will also be family-friendly activities like a bounce house, face painting, balloon animals, and a DJ.

Ice hockey fans, players excited for World Juniors tournament coming to Minnesota
Minnesota hockey fans get an extra gift this holiday season. The World Juniors is coming to the state of hockey. "Like no other," described defenseman Logan Hensler. "Happens once a year. It's always on TV. People are always watching, talking about it. There's a ton of attention to it. It's a pretty cool experience." Hensler has been there before. The defenseman from Woodbury took gold last January. Now, he's trying to repeat as a large, talented group tangle for a roster spot on Team USA. "Your compete, your discipline. All around play. You get pushed every day by these guys," said Hensler. "It's just important you keep up and keep going. Push through." Hensler's last few months have been his most accomplished in hockey. He won the most recent World Juniors gold and was then selected 23rd overall by the Ottawa Senators in the NHL draft in June. "Dream come true," remembered Hensler. "Got there, it was a great experience. The moment I got picked was kind of a blur. Kind of a blackout moment. Really special. Great organization. Just happy my family was there to witness it." Hensler, the top Minnesotan selected in 2025, will be a sophomore with the Badgers this winter. But it might not be long before he trades red and white for Ottawa's colors. "This next coming year I'm going back to Wisconsin," said Hensler. "A big thing for me is taking it year by year. Just gonna take this year, see how it goes. See how I grow as a player. Sha'Carri Richardson arrested on domestic violence charge at Seattle airport, police say
Olympic sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson was arrested Sunday on a domestic violence charge at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, according to a police report obtained by CBS News. The incident occurred at a TSA checkpoint where Richardson and a man got into an argument, according to the report detailed by the arresting officer. After viewing security footage, police found that Richardson allegedly pushed the man, and he fell into a nearby column. The video also allegedly showed the man attempting to walk away from Richardson. Richardson also threw a pair of headphones at him, police say. Richardson was booked at the South Correctional Entity in Des Moines, Washington, on Sunday and released on Monday, according to jail records. The man told police Richardson was his girlfriend. He didn't want to pursue charges, police said. CBS News reached out to Richardson's agent. Police said Richardson was scheduled to fly to Eugene, Oregon, which is where the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships are taking place through Sunday. Richardson earned her first Olympic gold medal in 2024 at the Paris Olympics as part of Team USA's 4x100-meter relay team. She also secured a silver medal in the 100 in 2024. At the 2020 Olympic trials, Richardson won the 100 but was later suspended for testing positive for marijuana. At the time, Richardson said she used the substance after learning from a reporter that her biological mom had died.

Subscribe now to view the full THN Archives here and read the full issue here. The Big Decision, Draft Preview 2012, May 1, 2012 Seth Jones is always prepared. His October birthday means he'll wait an extra year before becoming eligible for the draft. Playing up with national team development program's under-18 team gave him a legitimate shot at making Team USA's national junior team this season. His birthright as the son of ex-NBA player Popeye Jones is that lessons in being an elite athlete are burned in: 'Nothing comes easy,' Jones said. 'Nothing is going to be handed to you on a platter. It's what people don't see, what you do in practice, that matters.' Jones just makes it look easy. Already 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, he brings so many looks to the blueline that his coach struggles to single out a strength. 'I can just say 'everything,'' said Danton Cole. 'He passes well, he shoots well, he has a knack for knowing when to make a play and when to jump into the rush. On the defensive end, he sees the game. He's not overly physical, but he plays the body.' Though he was born in Texas, Jones spent his formative years in Colorado, where he became a big Avs fan. His model NHLer, however, comes from the Red Wings. 'Nick Lidstrom,' he said. 'I know that's lofty, but the way he plays the game, he keeps it simple.' Recently, Jones' life has been rather complex. As the best American prospect yet to commit to a college, the big defender was being courted by the Western League's Everett Silvertips, which hold his major junior rights, and a number of NCAA schools, most notably North Dakota. Jones sees the benefit of both routes. 'With Everett, there's more games played,' he said. 'It's a similar schedule to the NHL. College would be more developmental. You live in a dorm and you have to grow up a little.' Wherever he ends up, it won't be for long. Only a shoulder separation kept Jones off Team USA's national junior squad as a 17-year-old and big expectations have not fazed him. 'He's had a lot on him, but he's a uniquely prepared young man,' Cole said. 'He hasn't let anything become a distraction.'
