Four new forest fires reported in the region Monday
Ontario Forest Fires says there are now six forest fires in the northeast region after four new ones were discovered Monday.
One of the fires is under control while the other five are being held, the group said in its daily update on the area's forest fire situation.
'The fire hazard is low across the central and southern section of the region and moderate to high with a few pockets of extreme values across the northern section of the northeast region,' the update said.
The four new fires are:
Haliburton 6, a 0.1-hectare fire located on a small island in Lingham Lake. This fire is being held.
Cochrane 10, 32 hectares in size and located about 23 kilometres north of the Otter River in the far north. This fire is being observed.
Cochrane 11, located 20 kilometres southeast of the Severn River, is 69 hectares in size and is being monitored.
Cochrane 12, 109 hectares in size and located three kilometres north of the Dickey River. This fire is being observed.

Wildland fires can affect communities when they occur in or near neighbourhoods near forested areas. The FireSmart program offers tangible tips on how to mitigate the risk of wildland fires spreading to your home, cottage, or community.
'Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services would like to remind the public to use caution when performing any outdoor burning,' the update said.
'In order to dispose of yard waste and woody debris, we encourage you to use methods such as composting or using your local landfill. If you must burn, follow Ontario's Outdoor Burning Regulations.'

Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for Ottawa-Gatineau
Environment Canada (EC) has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for most of Eastern Ontario and parts of Western Quebec, including the Ottawa-Gatineau region. The watch was issued Sunday morning to warn that hazardous thunderstorms may develop in the afternoon and early evening. Toonie-sized hail, heavy downpours and wind gusts up to 100 km/h are possible, EC wrote. In Ontario, the watch stretches south to Cornwall and Kingston, and west to parts of Renfrew County. In Quebec, the watch includes Gatineau and communities to the north-east. It comes as much of the region is also experiencing a lengthy heat warning which began late Friday morning. The agency advises the public to stay indoors and take cover in a basement where possible during threatening weather, and notes strong winds can damage trees or buildings and overturn vehicles. EC issues a severe thunderstorm watch when conditions are favourable for a storm to develop. A warning is issued when there is evidence that a thunderstorm is imminent or occurring.

An early spring storm is bringing high winds and heavy rain to parts of Ontario as Environment Canada warns of significant snowfall in other parts of the province. 'Slow moving showers and thunderstorms are expected to bring heavy rain into this afternoon,' the agency said late Sunday morning. 'Hail and strong wind gusts are also possible.' Officials say hazards could include rainfall amounts of up to 50 mm in some areas, hail up to the size of a nickel, and strong winds capable of damaging trees, property, or even overturning vehicles. 'Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year,' Environment Canada cautioned. 'When thunder roars, go indoors!' The storms are expected to continue with the risk of flash flooding and reduced visibility. Emergency Management Ontario is advising residents to take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches and to avoid driving through flooded roadways. Police warn of 'water pooling' on DVP Toronto police also issued a warning just after 10:30 a.m. about "water pooling" on the Don Valley Parkway near the Gardiner Expressway. Drivers were urged to use caution and consider alternate routes, as lane restrictions were in effect. This marks the second concurrent weather warning for the city. Environment Canada's heat warning — the third since late June — also remains active and is expected to continue through Thursday. Daytime highs are forecast between 29 C and 32 C with humidex values approaching 40. Montreal under severe thunderstorm watch, heat warning on Sunday

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued the weather alert at 9:18 a.m. with a warning about conditions that are favourable for the development of 'dangerous thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.' The weather agency says there is also a tornado risk, and that heavy rain can cause flash flooding in some areas. It's not just the stormy weather to watch out for — ECCC has also put Montreal under a heat warning until Sunday evening. The forecast is calling for a high of 30 C on Sunday but the alert says humidex values could reach 40. ECCC says people should watch for signs of heat stroke, drink water often, and close blinds or shades at home. The low will drop to 22 C on Sunday night.
