Israel's war on Gaza has killed 209 Palestinian journalists: Ambassador Khattabi - Foreign Affairs
Khattabi, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Media and Communication Sector at the Arab League, made the statement on World Press Freedom Day, warning that the conflict has become one of the deadliest for media professionals in modern history.
Speaking from Cairo, Khattabi highlighted Israel's genocidal war in Gaza as a daily assault marked by the widespread killing of civilians—especially women and children—alongside the collapse of humanitarian access and systematic targeting of journalists.
He accused Israel of deliberately barring international media from entering Gaza while targeting local reporters in 'flagrant breach of international legal conventions.'
The Arab League marked World Press Freedom Day by issuing a formal statement honouring the role of independent media in challenging disinformation and resisting what it called 'false Israeli narratives.'
Khattabi called for urgent international action to protect journalists in conflict zones, including the development of new legal frameworks to respond to the specific risks of modern warfare and digital surveillance.
'This must be pursued through multilateral cooperation with international and regional bodies,' he said, advocating for a legal system that guarantees the physical safety and moral protection of journalists working under fire.
He also stressed the need for a 'balanced approach' to press freedom—one that upholds journalistic ethics and combats disinformation while defending the right to access information and speak truth to power.
The occasion, he said, is a time to honour the sacrifices of journalists who risk — and often lose — their lives in pursuit of truth.
World Press Freedom Day, observed annually on 3 May, was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 following a recommendation by UNESCO, to recognise the role of a free press in promoting accountability, transparency, and human rights.

Senior Hamas official slams US envoy's 'staged' visit to Gaza
'Mr. Witkoff, Gaza is not an animal farm that requires a staged personal visit to take some personal photos in front of the death traps overseen by your American companies,' Basem Naim, a former Palestinian health minister in Gaza, said in a statement shared with CNN. 'To remind you once again: The people of Gaza are not a group of beggars, but a free, proud, and noble people (if you understand what these words mean), who seek only their freedom, independence, and return to their homeland,' Naim said. Witkoff entered the southern Gaza city of Rafah on Friday to visit a controversial US-backed aid distribution site, run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) Naim said the GHF distribution mechanism was a 'humanitarian scandal.' The mechanism was set up to replace the United Nations' aid role in Gaza, after Israeli officials complained that UN aid was making it to Hamas. But the GHF mechanism has been broadly criticized for failing to improve conditions as starvation spreads in Gaza. More than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli military while trying to get food, hundreds of them near GHF sites, according to the UN. The GHF disputes this.

Australian State to Legalise Work From Home
Israa Farhan The Australian state of Victoria is preparing to introduce legislation that would make working from home a legal entitlement rather than a negotiable option, according to an announcement by Premier Jacinta Allan. Under the proposed law, employees would have the right to work from home at least two days per week, provided their job responsibilities allow for remote work. Speaking at the state Labor Party conference, Allan said the move is supported by clear evidence that remote workers are more productive and that it saves time and money for families. She emphasised that any worker who can reasonably perform their duties from home should have the right to do so for at least two days a week. The policy will now undergo consultation with workers, employers, and unions to refine the implementation details. Allan noted that the change could save the average worker around $110 AUD per week, help reduce road congestion, and encourage more women to remain in the workforce. Brad Battin, Victoria's opposition leader, expressed support for measures that enhance work-life balance. The bill is expected to be introduced to the state parliament next year. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results
