GEORGE TOWN : More than 800 pigs have been culled after African swine fever (ASF) was confirmed at three pig farms in Penang.
Local government committee chairman H'ng Mooi Lye said traces of the virus were detected at slaughterhouses, with the infected pigs traced back to farms in three districts.
'But lab tests have only confirmed ASF at three farms so far. The rest are still under investigation.
'We expect more positive cases once the results come in,' he told reporters.
H'ng said 822 pigs have been culled at two of the affected farms, while a third farm remains under close observation.
'We've banned the movement of pigs from affected farms to stop the spread,' he said.
He said pork from healthy pigs remains safe for consumption and the virus does not spread to humans.
'We are also stepping up checks at farms and abattoirs and will act fast to contain the outbreak,' he said.
H'ng urged farmers to report sick or dead pigs quickly and to strictly follow biosecurity protocols.
Penang veterinary services department director Dr Saira Banu Rejab said in a statement on July 13 that two farms at Kampung Selamat had recorded 50 pig deaths.

Dzulkefly: Health Ministry moving towards total vape ban

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — The government is working towards a complete ban on the sale and use of electronic cigarettes, or vapes, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dzulkefly Ahmad told the Dewan Rakyat today. He said the Ministry of Health is currently studying the matter, which requires a thorough assessment from legal, industry, government revenue, and licensing perspectives before any such policy can be implemented. Dzulkefly said that current regulations only restricted the sale of smoking products at specialty stores while not covering other retail outlets or convenience stores. 'To achieve more comprehensive control, particularly a total ban on the use and sale of electronic cigarettes, a detailed study and further action at the federal level are still required,' he said during Question Time. 'In line with this, the Health Ministry is moving towards a complete ban on the sale and use of electronic cigarettes or vapes to curb this issue more effectively and comprehensively. However, the implementation of such a ban must be carried out carefully.' MORE TO COME

Air quality status: Peninsular Malaysia sees general improvement, Mukah at unhealthy levels

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — Air quality has improved across Peninsular Malaysia, with most areas reporting 'moderate' readings this morning, leaving only one location in the country with an 'unhealthy' Air Pollutant Index (API) level. According to the Department of Environment (DOE), the station in Mukah, Sarawak, registered an API reading of 154 as of 9 am, placing it in the 'unhealthy' category. In the Klang Valley, which experienced haze last week, all areas are now in the 'moderate' range. The highest reading was in Cheras at 93, followed by Johan Setia at 80—a significant improvement for the latter, which had recorded unhealthy levels last week. Other stations in the Klang Valley reported readings from the mid-60s to high-70s. Further south, the situation was similar, with API readings in the 70s around Melaka, improving further towards Johor. Under the DOE's current system, API readings between 0 and 50 are categorised as good, 51 to 100 (moderate), 101 to 200 (unhealthy), 201 to 300 (very unhealthy), while 300 and above are hazardous.

New ASF outbreak hits pig farm in Tasek Gelugor, Penang

KEPALA BATAS: The Penang Department of Veterinary Services (JPVPP) has confirmed a new case of African Swine Fever (ASF) at a pig farm in Kampung Selamat, Tasek Gelugor, raising the total number of infected farms in the area to four. JPVPP director Dr Saira Banu Mohamed Rejab stated that lab tests confirmed the latest infection but assured the outbreak remains under control. 'JPVPP is actively conducting further investigations and collecting additional samples from the relevant farms. So far, the spread of the disease is under control, with only one more farm having tested positive,' she said. She added that farms in Kampung Selamat, Seberang Perai Selatan, and Barat Daya remain ASF-free, with no significant increase in infected pigs. The announcement was made during the state-level Farmers, Breeders, and Fishermen's Day opening ceremony at the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute. To date, 1,083 pigs have been culled at two infected farms, with carcasses buried on-site. Culling operations for the remaining two farms will begin soon. 'The culling process follows strict procedures on certified land. Disposal for the other farms will be on government-owned land in Seberang Perai Utara,' Saira Banu explained. She warned pig traders and farmers against sharing transport lorries to slaughterhouses to prevent cross-contamination. The total pig population across the four farms is estimated at 6,000. Earlier reports confirmed ASF in three Kampung Selamat farms, with two experiencing high mortality rates. – Bernama
