Colombia's cycling star ‘Lucho' Herrera quizzed over murder conspiracy

BOGOTA : Former top cyclist Luis 'Lucho' Herrera appeared before Colombian prosecutors yesterday, to address claims he was involved in the murder of four farmers decades ago.
Sixty-four-year-old Herrera voluntarily appeared at the offices of prosecutors in the capital Bogota, AFP reporters witnessed.
He was to be questioned about allegations by two former paramilitaries that in 2002 he conspired to kill four of his neighbours in central Colombia.
The two ex-paramilitaries – members of one of the bloody far-right death squads that for decades fought Colombia left-wing guerrillas – claim 'Lucho' gave them about US$9,700 to murder four men.
They alleged that Herrera claimed the men were rebels who wanted to kidnap him, but were in fact farmers who had refused to sell their land.
Lawyer Hernando Benavides said his client Herrera was innocent and a 'victim of events of which he is unaware'.
One of the paramilitaries was recently sentenced to more than 22 years in prison over the forced disappearance of the men.
A source from the prosecutor's office told AFP that Herrera had been invited to provide his 'free version' of events, and was not obliged to attend as he is not listed as a defendant.
Herrera has publicly denied belonging to criminal organisations or purposely causing anyone harm.
But he could yet face formal charges.
His brother Rafael Herrera was also requested to be present yesterday.

Global cocaine market hit new record highs

(EPA Images pic) VIENNA : Cocaine production, seizures and use all hit record highs in 2023, the UN drug agency said today, with the illicit drug's market the world's fastest-growing. Illegal production jumped to 3,708 tonnes, nearly 34% more than in 2022, and more than four times higher than 10 years earlier, when it was at a low, the Vienna-based UN office on drugs and crime (UNODC) said in its annual report. The current surge is mainly due to an increase in the size of the area under illicit coca bush cultivation in Colombia and updated yield data, it added. Global cocaine seizures, too, recorded a high of 2,275 tonnes, marking a 68% rise in the four years to 2023. The number of cocaine users also grew to 25 million in 2023, up from 17 million ten years earlier. 'Cocaine has become fashionable for the more affluent society,' UNODC chief researcher Angela Me said, noting a 'vicious cycle' of increased use and production. While Colombia remains the key producer, cocaine traffickers are breaking into new markets across Asia and Africa, according to the report, with organised crime groups from the Western Balkans increasing their influence. Captagon 'A new era of global instability has intensified challenges in addressing the world drug problem, empowering organised crime groups and pushing drug use to historically high levels,' UNODC noted. In 2023, 6% of the population aged between 15 and 64 are estimated to have used a drug, compared to 5.2% of the population in 2013. Cannabis remains the most widely used drug. Seizures of amphetamine-type stimulants also reached a record high in 2023, making up almost half of all global seizures of synthetic drugs, followed by synthetic opioids, including fentanyl, UNODC said. The fall of ruler Bashar al-Assad in Syria last December has 'created uncertainty around the future of the captagon trade', UNODC added. Earlier this month, Syria said authorities had seized all production facilities of the illicit stimulant, which became Syria's largest export under Assad. 'The latest seizure data from 2024 and 2025 confirm that captagon is continuing to flow – primarily to countries of the Arabian peninsula – possibly indicating the release of previously-accumulated stockpiles or continued production in different locations,' UNODC said.

SEATTLE, June 26 — Inter Milan kept their cool to beat nine-man River Plate 2-0 and reach the Club World Cup last 16 on Wednesday, while Mexican side Monterrey followed them through from Group E. Borussia Dortmund defeated Ulsan HD 1-0 to claim top spot in Group F and the Germans will face Sergio Ramos' Monterrey, who thrashed Urawa Red Diamonds 4-0. Argentine powerhouses River Plate were eliminated after their defeat by Inter, who will take on more South American opposition on Monday in Charlotte, in the shape of Fluminense. The Brazilian side could only draw 0-0 against South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns but it was enough to claim second place behind Dortmund. Champions League runners-up Inter faced a battle in Seattle against an aggressive River Plate side who had Lucas Martinez and Gonzalo Montiel sent off in front of 45,000 fans at Lumen Field.
