Accused in high-ranking Ekurhuleni metro official's murder case remains behind bars
Kempton Express reports that Thabani Goodwill Ntshalintshali appeared in the Kempton Park Regional Court yesterday, in connection with Mafole's murder.
Mafole was gunned down in Kempton Park on June 30.
During proceedings, it emerged that Ntshalintshali has another pending murder case.
The bail hearing in that separate matter has been concluded, and the trial is set to commence on August 12 and continue on August 19.
For the murder charge related to Mafole, bail is being opposed as Ntshalintshali is viewed as a potential threat.
Due to the pending murder case against him, he will remain in custody.
Ntshalintshali is scheduled to appear in court again on August 15 for further investigation in the Mafole case.
The August 15 appearance will not be for a bail application.

'It wouldn't be appropriate to speak before that discussion,' he said. As the outgoing chairperson of the National Anti-Corruption Council, whose term ends this month, Cachalia pledged to advance the council's recommendations in his new role. 'I'm now in a better position than I was as chairperson to take those recommendations forward, and I certainly will,' he said. He plans to bring the council and SAPS leadership together to align on reforms, particularly focusing on whistleblower protection and internal accountability mechanisms. Cachalia also plans to work closely with Justice Minister Ronald Lamola, stating that the fight against corruption must be a joint effort. Wentworth police clamp down on illegal scrapyard
A MAN accused of operating an illegal scrapyard in Wentworth is due to appear at the Wentworth Magistrate's Court today (August 1). The suspect (57) was arrested during a sting operation conducted by Metro Police Street Crime unit on July 31. It is alleged that the suspect was receiving suspected stolen goods from people for the purpose of reselling them. Also read: Operation Good Hope returns to The Bluff The police found copper pipes, brass tops believed to have been stolen from places of worship, and several other copper items believed to have been stolen from churches. The man is facing charges of operating a scrapyard without a valid licence and possession of suspected stolen property. uMngeni councillor murder: Traditional leader uncle among 5 arrested
A suspect accused of killing the late uMngeni municipal councillor Nhlalayenza Ndlovu was his uncle. According to Zululand Observer, Ndlovu was gunned down at his Masosheni home near Mpophomeni in December 2023. The uncle (56), who is an iNkosi (a Zulu word for 'chief'), was arrested on Wednesday and appeared alongside a 34-year-old accomplice in the Howick Magistrate's Court yesterday. The arrest by the SAPS Political Killings Task Team brings the total number of suspects to five. The matter has been postponed to next Friday for a formal bail application. DA leader Francois Rodgers said the iNkosi is allegedly implicated in a separate case involving the murder of his cousin. 'While the DA welcomes the progress in this case, we remain deeply disappointed by the delays in the arrests. The information that ultimately led to the arrests was already available to the authorities by the DA's independent legal team, yet it was disregarded,' said Rodgers. 'The disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has further weakened the state's ability to address politically motivated crimes. 'The presence of senior SAPS intelligence officials during court proceedings only deepens concerns about whether our intelligence structures are being used effectively and impartially in such politically sensitive matters.' Cogta MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi commended the SAPS on the arrest, saying it was a 'significant breakthrough'. Buthelezi praised the task team for their diligent work, which led to this progress and the arrest of more suspects.
