Mass. school employee stole food, supplies for his Cape Cod snack shack, authorities say
Patrick VanCott, 62, of Sandwich pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Plymouth District Court on Friday. His charges include larceny over $1,200 by a single scheme, larceny from a building and larceny under $1,200 by a single scheme.
He was ordered held on a $50,000 cash bail and to stay away from all Plymouth school campuses and school storage facilities. He's been placed on administrative leave, according to officials.
A superior court judge lowered his cash bail to $10,000 after his attorney petitioned for a bail review on Friday, court records show. He posted the bail and was ordered to wear a GPS monitor upon his release.
'People should be reminded that folks are innocent until proven guilty and we are going to vigorously defend this case,' Nate Amendola, an attorney for VanCott, said on Sunday.
Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz's Office said public school officials contacted the police after they received an anonymous letter 'alleging criminal activity' at the Plymouth Community Intermediate School.
'The letter alleged that a person has been stealing commercial equipment and food products from the school,' officials said.
The property is owned by the town and paid for with federal dollars, officials said.
VanCott, the director of food services for Plymouth public schools, was identified as the suspect after a police investigation.
He is the only person with the authority to place orders for the cafeteria, officials said.
VanCott also runs a snack shack at Sandy Neck Beach in Barnstable, officials said.
His orders consisted of premium Angus hamburgers, hot dogs, lobster meat, and other food products that were not served to students or school staff, officials said.
Surveillance footage shows VanCott taking two commercial refrigerators from the school and onto his truck in April, officials said.
Police reviewed cafeteria financial documents and compiled a list of items purchased by VanCott but not currently in the public schools' storage facility that totaled over $8,300 in goods, including:

Microwave: $299
Bagel warmer: $294
Cuisinart coffee maker: $84
In June, police executed a search warrant at the snack shack and found an industrial-sized refrigerator and other kitchen equipment and 'government-issued' food.
VanCott was taken into custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 21.

Mass. man charged with murder in connection with woman's death in fatal stabbing
A Mattapan man hurt during what officials called a 'domestic violence incident,' where a woman was fatally stabbed in Brockton, pleaded not guilty during his arraignment on Wednesday, Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz's office said. Caught with Nazi flag, mopped driver stomped on Cape Verdean flag outside East Prov. City Hall
EAST PROVIDENCE – A Lincoln man faces vandalism and other charges after he stomped on a Cape Verdean flag posted outside City Hall during a Cape Verdean Independence Day ceremony on July 2, according to the East Providence police. When police caught up to the 27-year-old man riding away on a moped, they found him to have a large Nazi flag and a 6-inch knife. The incident happened around noon, while the ceremony was being held inside City Hall. The police say the man drove up to City Hall on a moped, walked up to three flags outside the entrance and threw both the United States flag and the Cape Verdean flag onto the ground. Witnesses reported that the man stomped on the Cape Verdean flag, and the incident was caught on a video surveillance camera. The police said they caught the man a short distance from City Hall. The man is being charged with vandalism, disorderly conduct and possession of a prohibited weapon. He is scheduled for arraignment on July 3 in District Court, Providence. The East Providence police are consulting with the Rhode Island Attorney General's Office to determine whether to pursue hate crime enhancements. "The City of East Providence takes great pride in being a diverse, inclusive and welcoming community for all,' Mayor Bob DaSilva said in a press release. "There is no room in this city for acts of hatred and vandalism. Our administration condemns all hateful acts and will continue to make it abundantly clear that East Providence is an inclusive community where hate is neither welcome nor tolerated." Theft suspect in jail without bond after missing arraignment
Jul. 3—A Moulton man convicted of first-degree theft of property in 2011 and currently out on bond for allegedly committing the same crime in 2023 was arrested Monday by the Morgan County Sheriff's Office for failing to appear at his June 24 arraignment, according to court records and affidavits. Jail records show Christopher Allen Haynes, 44, was being held without bond at the Morgan County Jail on Wednesday afternoon. Haynes was arrested June 15, 2024, by Decatur police for allegedly stealing a truck from a business in Northwest Decatur the previous year and then wrecking it. "It was later determined that Christopher Allen Haynes was driving the vehicle at the time of the wreck," according to the affidavit. The affidavit identified the truck as a gold 2007 Chevrolet Silverado. A state trooper contacted Haynes, who allegedly admitted to taking the truck but claimed he had permission to use it and had left his own vehicle in the parking lot. However, statements from the truck's owner and video surveillance footage directly contradicted Haynes' claims, according to the affidavit. Court records show Haynes was released from Morgan County Jail on July 3, 2024, after posting a $5,000 bond following his arrest for first-degree theft of property. Haynes was arrested by Priceville police on July 1, 2010, for stealing over $3,800 worth of jewelry from an individual, according to a complaint filed in Morgan County District Court. At the time, he resided in Trinity. Court records show Haynes pleaded guilty to first-degree theft of property on February 7, 2011, and received a 15-year prison sentence.
