
Renk, Steyr set to step up production as Europe's arms spending fills order books
Their bloated order pipelines are similar to many defence sector peers that have been reporting solid results while flagging rising backlogs, as European governments scramble to increase defence budgets after decades of under-investment.
Renk's and Steyr's piles of orders stand between four and five times their expected revenue this year, according to an LSEG poll of analysts.
Renk CEO Alexander Sagel told Reuters that the German gearbox maker can digest the order backlog by changing the shift model at its main plant in Augsburg, rebuilding assembly lines to allow more flexibility and adjusting production at its European factories.
"We do not need to build any new plant anywhere in the world, at least for the European market," Sagel said.
LBBW analyst Stefan Maichl told Reuters that Renk's order backlog supported its growth ambitions and made planning for the future more secure.
Renk, which makes gearboxes for Leopard 2 tanks and transmissions for Bradley fighting vehicles, reported a 14% rise in its quarterly revenue.
Its smaller Austrian peer Steyr, which supplies engines to BAE Systems (BAES.L), opens new tab and the U.S. Navy Seals, saw its revenue grow by 26%.
"We are in the ramp-up phase in order to work off the high order backlog. At the same time, we are continuing to see dynamic demand," Steyr CEO Julian Cassutti said in an earnings statement.
Both companies confirmed their forecasts for the full year.
Their Frankfurt-listed shares have more than tripled in value this year, as Western nations buy supplies to help Ukraine fight Russia's invasion and strengthen their own capabilities amid fears of waning protection from the United States.

India to maintain Russian oil imports despite Trump threats, government sources say
NEW DELHI, Aug 2 (Reuters) - India will keep purchasing oil from Russia despite U.S. President Donald Trump's threats of penalties, two Indian government sources told Reuters on Saturday, not wishing to be identified due to the sensitivity of the matter. On top of a new 25% tariff on India's exports to the U.S., Trump indicated in a Truth Social post last month that India would face additional penalties for purchases of Russian arms and oil. On Friday, Trump told reporters he had heard that India would no longer be buying oil from Russia. But the sources said there would be no immediate changes. "These are long-term oil contracts," one of the sources said. "It is not so simple to just stop buying overnight." Justifying India's oil purchases from Russia, a second source said India's imports of Russian grades had helped avoid a global surge in oil prices, which have remained subdued despite Western curbs on the Russian oil sector. Unlike Iranian and Venezuelan oil, Russian crude is not subject to direct sanctions, and India is buying it below the current price cap fixed by the European Union, the source said. The New York Times also quoted two unnamed senior Indian officials on Saturday as saying there had been no change in Indian government policy. Indian government authorities did not respond to Reuters' request for official comment on its oil purchasing intentions. However, during a regular press briefing on Friday, foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India has a "steady and time-tested partnership" with Russia. "On our energy sourcing requirements ... we look at what is there available in the markets, what is there on offer, and also what is the prevailing global situation or circumstances," he said. The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Trump, who has made ending Russia's war in Ukraine a priority of his administration since returning to office this year, has expressed growing impatience with Russian President Vladimir Putin in recent weeks. He has threatened 100% tariffs on U.S. imports from countries that buy Russian oil unless Moscow reaches a major peace deal with Ukraine. Russia is the leading supplier to India, the world's third-largest oil importer and consumer, accounting for about 35% of its overall supplies. India imported about 1.75 million barrels per day of Russian oil from January to June this year, up 1% from a year ago, according to data provided to Reuters by sources. But while the Indian government may not be deterred by Trump's threats, sources told Reuters this week that Indian state refiners stopped buying Russian oil after July discounts narrowed to their lowest since 2022 - when sanctions were first imposed on Moscow - due to lower Russian exports and steady demand. The grant worth £650million in total, which was announced by the government recently, will see prices slashed for some fully electric cars although it is so far unclear which models will be eligible for £1.500 or £3,750 off their respective price tags. The £1,500 'Grant Guarantee' for all three badges runs until August 31. This has raised concerns among some critics, who argue that taxpayers may effectively be contributing twice - once through the Motability scheme and again through the EV grant subsidies. Furthermore, some welfare users have expressed difficulties with EVs, with issues such as limited home charging facilities and inadequate public charging infrastructure causing frustration for some. Australia records its WORST road toll in 15 years after more than 1,300 people were killed on roads across the country
Australia's road safety record is backsliding with new data revealing motorist-related deaths have reached the highest level in 15 years. The National Road Safety Strategy is being called into question after 1,329 people died on the country's roads in the year to June 30 - the highest on record since 2010. Quarterly benchmarking from the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) showed that no state or territory was on track to reach the target of halving fatalities by 2030. Since 2021, when the National Road Safety Strategy was introduced, there has been a 21.1 per cent increase in road deaths, the data found. Despite many states testing out new types of speed cameras and other technology, the number of deaths in 2025 somehow crept up by 3.3 per cent compared to 2024 The only areas of Australia that have seen a decrease in road deaths for the same period, last year, were South Australia and the Northern Territory. However, that did not mean the Northern Territory had a spotless record, with the territory carrying the highest rate of deaths per 100,000 residents. Data revealed 19 people per 100,000 died on roads in the Northern Territory, followed by 8.3 people in Tasmania, 6.1 in Western Australia, 5.3 in Queensland, 4.4 in South Australia, 4.2 in both NSW and Victoria and 1.7 in the Australian Capital Territory. Managing Director of the AAA, Michael Bradley, said the government's strategy was 'clearly not working'. 'Our National Road Safety Strategy is clearly not working as planned and governments cannot expect to get better results by pursuing the same failed approach,' Mr Bradley said. The AAA represents state-based motoring clubs and boasts 9.5 million members. The Benchmarking Report drew data from the Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) statistics. The data is used to assess which parts of Australia are on track to reach the government's 2030 goal. However, the report showed Australia was not on track, as 192 pedestrians died in the year leading to June - an increase of 15 per cent compared to the previous year. In the same period, 38 cyclists were killed and a whopping 264 motorcyclists died on Aussie roads across the country. The AAA said it hoped to shed light on the country's growing road toll in order to 'de-politicise road funding and to enable evidence-based safety interventions'. Previously, secret safety ratings of NSW's roads were released by its state government in July. The data showed 71 per cent of roads received a mere three out of five stars under the Australian Road Assessment Program's (ARAP) road assessment scheme. Mr Bradley applauded the government for having the courage to release the data. 'This national leadership is to be congratulated, and it will save lives by improving transparency, accountability, and by ensuring road investment dollars get spent where they are most needed,' Mr Bradley said. Mr Bradley added it was a step in the right direction that the Commonwealth had recently tied its funding of state roads with the provision of road safety crash data. 'However, it too needs to do more to publish and analyse the valuable information it is now collecting,' Mr Bradley said. ARAP rates roads based on analysis of risk factors which include the measures in place to keep drivers safe. The measures include, average daily traffic, speed limit, number of lanes in each direction, lane width, shoulder width, presence or absence of roadside barriers and rumble strips, gradient and curvature, quality of line markings, skid resistance, whether the road is single or dual carriageway and provisions for pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.
