India becomes world's 5th largest aviation market with 241 million flyers in 2024; Mumbai-Delhi ranks among busiest global air routes: IATA data
India's passenger numbers grew 11.1% over 2023, when it handled 211 million flyers, overtaking Japan, which recorded 205 million passengers, despite growing faster at 18.6%, PTI reported.
'The US remains the world's biggest aviation market with 876 million passengers in 2024 on the strength of its domestic market, growing 5.2 per cent year-on-year,' IATA said. China was the second-largest, with 741 million passengers, a jump of 18.7% over 2023.
UK ranked third with 261 million flyers, followed by Spain (241 million) and India in fifth. These figures include both domestic and international passengers arriving or departing from each country.
Among global airport pairs, the Mumbai–Delhi sector carried 5.9 million passengers in 2024, placing it 7th worldwide. The Jeju–Seoul (CJU–GMP) route in South Korea topped the chart with 13.2 million passengers.
'Asia Pacific dominated the ranking for the world's busiest airport pairs,' IATA noted, adding that Jeddah–Riyadh (JED–RUH) was the only non-Asia Pacific route in the top 10.

Premium travel segment outpaces economy in some regions
International premium class travel — business and first class — grew 11.8% globally in 2024, slightly ahead of economy class growth at 11.5%. In all, 116.9 million passengers flew premium class, making up 6% of total international passengers.
The Asia Pacific region led in growth with 22.8% more premium flyers year-on-year (21 million travellers). However, economy class travel in the region grew faster, up 28.6% to 500.8 million passengers.
In contrast, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and North America saw faster growth in premium than economy travel. Europe remained the largest market for international premium travel with 39.3 million passengers, while premium flyers were the highest proportionally in the Middle East at 14.7%.
B737 and A320 dominate skies
In terms of aircraft usage, Boeing's B737 led the skies with 10 million flights and 2.4 trillion Available Seat Kilometres (ASKs) in 2024. The Airbus A320 followed with 7.9 million flights and 1.7 trillion ASKs, and the Airbus A321 came third with 3.4 million flights and 1.1 trillion ASKs.
ASK is a key metric used in aviation to measure passenger-carrying capacity.

Chennai adds 135 e-buses, focuses on IT corridor
Chennai: Nearly a month after launching 120 electric buses from Vyasarpadi depot, Chennai will to roll out 135 more e-buses, including 55 air-conditioned, from Aug 11. The new fleet will operate across 13 routes from the newly upgraded Perumbakkam depot, and will begin covering OMR. Key routes include Siruseri to Airport (MAA 2), CMBT to Kilambakkam (570), Broadway to Kelambakkam (102), T Nagar to Thiruporur (19), Thiruvanmiyur to Kilambakkam (95X), and Kilambakkam to Sholinganallur (555S). "This fleet meets the demands of IT corridor commuters, which the Vyasarpadi fleet did not," said MTC GM (operations) S Nedunsezhian. This is Chennai's first batch of AC e-buses. Non-AC e-buses will follow the deluxe fare, and AC buses will use the regular AC fare, said MTC MD T Prabhushankar. MTC plans to add 170 more AC e-buses. The buses were set up by OHM Global Mobility (an Ashok Leyland subsidiary) for 233.75crore. Each 12m bus has 39 seats, four CCTV cameras, wheelchair ramps, reserved seats for the elderly and disabled, stop-request buttons, and a kneeling function lowered to 250mm. "This model helps us manage tech and environmental risks and addresses our driver shortage," Nedunsezhian added. While the Vyasarpadi fleet has three women drivers and 17 female conductors, Perumbakkam is expected to onboard more women once training is complete, said an OHM spokesperson. Vyasarpadi and Perumbakkam are part of MTC's first phase of 625 electric buses, costing 697crore. Wheel and steal: Two employes of car dealership isell 68 cars, pocket Rs 10 crore
Ahmedabad: At first, it looked like a paperwork glitch. But a closer audit at a car dealership in Sola exposed a massive fraud: 68 used cars had been sold off under the table by insiders. The fraud, which spanned over three months, was allegedly masterminded by two employees who pocketed the proceeds, leaving the company with a loss of nearly Rs 10 crore. Sola police on Tuesday booked the two senior employees after the company's CEO lodged a complaint. The complainant stated that the company, which deals in new and used cars, discovered the fraud during an internal audit on July 23. "Of the missing vehicles, 53 had been officially purchased between April and July 24, 2025, but could not be traced in stock. An additional 15 cars, which were never bought had been sold to buyers under the company's name. However, the money was neither deposited into the company account nor paid to the original sellers," the FIR stated. Middle-class fumes as e-khata tax whip spares big fish, targets commoners in Bengaluru
Bengaluru: Show-cause notices issued by BBMP to those who have obtained e-khatas has left property owners fuming. Questioning the very system that allows gross misappropriations to fester and lets the big fish slip through, while tightening the noose around commoners, many now want Bengaluru district in-charge minister D K Shivakumar to intervene and end their harassment. "The bureaucrats piloting the e-khata project and deputy chief minister D K Shivakumar should have some clarity on this. Why should we suffer and be forced to prove our credentials when they cannot streamline the system? Why hand out notices after issuing e-khatas, when the discrepancies in property tax declarations could have been pointed out earlier? This is nothing but harassment," some of the affected property owners said after they were slapped with notices. When I bought my flat, which is 1,700 sq ft, the revenue staff suggested I disclose just 1,500 sq ft. When I questioned it, they told me not to worry and hinted at a Rs 500 bribe. Now I've got a notice. Who is responsible here?" He added: "When I raised the issue, the official suggested I appeal with BBBMP's e-court. Now this is another sham. I am supposed to appeal for something that I'm not even responsible for, but has been wrongly accused of." Another citizen, Sudhindra Halappa Gowda, said: "While we are being tortured so much, what about all the bureaucrats and politicians who are not even paying taxes? They are not being penalised. Why is the middle-class suffering?" The issue appears to have been triggered by a software check introduced recently. BBMP's new system, Kauvery, automatically flagged any mismatch in property area details between e-khata and EPID. A senior BBMP official, though, defended the system, saying: "We don't manually input anything. The software picks up discrepancies. If people have entered wrong details in their e-khatas, how are we to blame?" He added: "Car parking area is never explicitly mentioned in the sale deed in terms of size — only the super built-up area is. Citizens have ignored this all along, but parking space is also a property and tax is due on it." BBMP's stand Commenting on the current impasse, Munish Moudgil, the BBMP special commissioner (revenue), said: "We have issued notices only in case of properties where the variation is more than 5%. For those under 5%, we didn't intend to send any alerts. "However, due to a technical glitch on the part of NIC, mass emails were sent out even to those who were not at fault. These affected residents can appeal, and we will resolve the issue promptly." Yet, the question that taxpayers are raising is that why should they be wasting their time for someone else's inefficiency?"
