Harpal Cheema lauds rare unanimity on all legislative matters during special assembly session
Calling it a unique and historic achievement, Cheema attributed this remarkable consensus to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government's focus on the welfare and progress of the populace of the state.
'In my two terms in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, I have never before witnessed such complete unanimity on all legislative matters. This signalled the meticulously planned and honest approach of the state government in guiding Punjab towards new heights of development,' he claimed at a press conference here.
The finance minister elaborated that the assembly session was extended by two days on its very first day, facilitating thorough discussions on crucial bills and allowing for meaningful contributions from the opposition.
He specifically mentioned 'The Punjab Prevention of Crime Against Religious Scriptures Bill, 2025', which, following an extended discussion, was unanimously referred to a select committee. He further noted the unanimous passage of a resolution introduced by water resources minister Barinder Goyal on the second day of the session, which opposed the deployment of CISF personnel in BBMB establishments.
Pointing out that the Congress party had given its consent for CISF security to BBMB in 2021, he commended the party for rectifying its previous stance by supporting the state government's resolution, which was passed with full consensus. He further stated that all parties unanimously pledged their cooperation in eradicating the drug menace from the state.

Surat targets 50% electric vehicles share on roads by 2030
Surat: Taking a step further in promoting environment-friendly transport in the Diamond City, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) on Friday launched the Green Vehicle Policy (GVP) 2025 on Friday, setting an ambitious target of at least 50% of all total vehicle sales being electric by 2030. Replacing the earlier Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2021, the new framework focuses on the adoption of different alternate fuels like hydrogen-powered vehicles, biofuel-based vehicles, along with EVs. The policy will be implemented for a period of five years. To support the growing number of EV vehicles, over 460 charging stations will be established across the city, ensuring that there is at least one station per sq km, incentivising e-vehicle purchase through subsidies and creating necessary infrastructure. Direct incentives in the form of subsidies will be provided to commercial electric three-wheelers, light commercial vehicles (LCVs), and pink e-autos for women entrepreneurs. Subsidies will vary by vehicle type and segment, making adoption economically viable. Incentives also include exemption from vehicle tax. The cell will include officials from SMC, the Regional Transport Office (RTO), electricity distribution companies, traffic police, the members of The Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and experts. "The GVP25 aligns with India's net-zero carbon goals and serves as a roadmap to make Surat a climate-resilient and environmentally-friendly urban centre. Through a combination of technological adoption, public-private collaboration, and citizen engagement, we aim to lead the green mobility revolution in the state," said Rajan Patel, chairman, Standing Committee. Additionally, the policy envisions the creation of green zones and mobility corridors to improve air quality and promote non-polluting transportation options. Digital platforms, including a One EV App and a web portal, will streamline services and bring transparency to stakeholders. The city will also host a GV Expo on Sept 8, showcasing innovations in GV technology and charging infrastructure. Special focus will be placed on training for safety protocols and emergency response SOPs.

Pankaja Munde vows to make Godavari river pollution-free
Nashik: State environment minister on Friday pledged that she would focus on cleaning up the Godavari river and ensuring its pollution-free status, particularly in preparation for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela. "State govt is planning the rejuvenation of rivers in the state, and a long-term plan is also being prepared by the state environment department," she said. Munde said only 48% of the sewage water was being treated. "Hence, we are working long-term for the rejuvenation of the rivers in Maharashtra," she said, adding that there was a need to make long-term plans to overcome air, water and sound pollution. She said the environment department was preparing the SOPs for the construction sector. The minister also released the white papers regarding the measures needed to improve the air quality of the city and the measures to improve the solid waste management system by the civic body.
