How much is Florida football's program worth? The Athletic ranks FBS teams by valuation

USA Today4 days ago
College football is a big business these days. In fact, the sport is among the biggest cash printers out there when it comes to the entertainment industry, creating billions of dollars of revenue every year.
With NIL now here and the collegiate gridiron turned into a de facto professional league, one might wonder how much each school's program is worth as a whole — like how pro sports franchises have a value based on the fiscal aspects of the entity.
The Athletic's Matt Baker attempted to answer this query in his rankings of every Power 4 team by how much they'd sell for, in which he put together some numbers based on what we know about the business side of these operations. Of course, he offers the following caveat:
"Do not take our numbers to the bank, literally or metaphorically. Instead, consider this a fun attempt at blending back-of-the-envelope math with common sense to price college programs like their professional peers — an exercise that's theoretical for now … but might not be much longer," Baker warns.
So, where do the Florida Gators stand in these data?
Florida football's valuation, ranking per The Athletic
According to Baker's math, the Gators are the 12th most-valuable program in the country and seventh most-valuable in the Southeastern Conference.
"The Gators are also pursuing a major stadium upgrade that would significantly change the revenue picture; in January, the chairperson of the university's board of trustees publicly floated a $1 billion price tag for the project," he offers.
It is also noted that Florida's average annual football revenue is $98.5 million. However, Baker's counterpoint has been a source of agony for the Orange and Blue faithful.
"Florida's downside remains its on-field product. USC is the only other program in our top 12 that has never made the College Football Playoff, and the Gators have suffered through four consecutive seasons without finishing ranked."
SEC schools among top-30-ranked program values
A full dozen of the conference's 16 member schools cracked the top 30 of The Athletic's college football program valuations, with the Gators sitting near the midpoint at No. 7 among SEC programs.
The Texas Longhorns and Georgia Bulldogs occupy the two top spots in the league as well as overall, respectively, while the Alabama Crimson Tide (No. 6 overall, No. 3 in SEC), Oklahoma Sooners (No. 7 overall, No. 4 in SEC), Tennessee Volunteers (No. 9 overall, No. 5 in SEC) and LSU Tigers (No. 10 overall, No. 6 in SEC) round out the top 10.
After Florida follow the Auburn Tigers (No. 13 overall, No. 8 in SEC), Texas A&M Aggies (No. 15 overall, No. 9 in SEC), Arkansas Razorbacks (No. 23 overall, No. 10 in SEC), Ole Miss Rebels (No. 25 overall, No. 11 in SEC) and South Carolina Gamecocks (No. 257 overall, No. 12 in SEC).

The world's tallest teen, 7-foot-9 centre Olivier Rioux, gives football a try at Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The world's tallest teenager is trying his hand — his reach, really — at football. Florida basketball player Olivier Rioux, a 7-foot-9 centre who played for the Under-19 Canadian national team this summer, recently worked out for the Gators' football team. Rioux, from Terrebonne, Que., donned an orange helmet and took snaps on special teams, with Florida assistant coaches hoping his massive wingspan might be a difference maker when it comes to blocking field goals and extra points. 'I like the idea," Gators basketball coach Todd Golden said during a booster event Thursday evening. 'I give them credit for trying it.' There was one issue: The 305-pound Rioux has an 11-inch vertical, so even with his extra-long reach, he was unable to block any kicks during the workout. 'They were a little disappointed,' Golden said. No worries. Rioux can simply stick to his full-time gig with the hoops team. After redshirting as a true freshman last season, he's expected to get on the court in limited capacity this fall. He's unlikely to play much considering the defending national champions return their entire frontcourt, but he should at least get on the court in garbage time. Golden already has considered using him to guard inbound passes, something Rioux did to perfection just before halftime against the United States in the FIBA U19 World Cup in Switzerland earlier this month. Rioux forced an errant pass that led to a turnover and a 3-pointer just before halftime. Rioux's unusual height landed him in the Guinness World Records a few years ago, and he has become a walking viral video at Florida. While coaches and teammates climbed a ladder to cut pieces of the nets after the Gators won the Southeastern Conference Tournament, Rioux was able to do it while standing flat-footed. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Nebraska football still pushing for top ranked class of 2027 tight end Ahmad Hudson

The Nebraska Cornhuskers are still in the mix for class of 2027 tight end Ahmad Hudson. The playmaker indicated that Nebraska, Florida, LSU, and Texas A&M have been recruiting him the hardest, according to Sam Spiegelman. Hudson is the No. 17 overall player in the 2027 class, the fourth overall player in the state of Louisiana, and the top tight end in the class per Rivals rankings. As a sophomore, he caught 41 passes for 718 yards and six touchdowns. He's also an accomplished basketball player, averaging 21 points and 14 rebounds per game last season. The Huskers first offered him a scholarship on January 30, and he visited Lincoln on June 6 for the Battle of the Boneyard tournament. It will certainly be interesting to see how this recruitment progresses. He is a dynamic athlete, standing at 6-foot-8 and weighing 230 pounds. He would bring an immediate playmaker to the Nebraska offense and give future quarterbacks a dynamic target. Top Michigan Wolverines 2026 target, five-star Savion Hiter, sets commitment date

Michigan football has been on fire when it comes to assembling the 2026 recruiting class, but the biggest fish is still out to sea. The Wolverines have made no secret that there's one target they covet more than any other, and that's Mineral (Va.) Louisa County five-star running back Savion Hiter. Hiter has appeared to be a Michigan lean, but Tennessee, in particular, has come on strong in recent months. Ohio State and Georgia also remain in the picture. It's been something of a wait, as Hiter didn't even have a commitment date. But now we know when he'll make a decision, as he announced, via Hayes Fawcett, that he'll be making his college choice on August 19. The Wolverines do have one running back committed in Columbus (Ohio) St. Francis de Sales three-star Jonathan Brown, who self-admittedly noted that he's a bit of a project. Hiter is the type who can come in and make an instant impact, even as a true freshman. Here's his scouting report via 247Sports: Juiced-up running back with star potential for a College Football Playoff contender given the mix of his burst, power, agility, balance and vision. Has dominated the combine setting (1.52 10-yard split, 4.12 shuttle, 36-inch vertical jump) and is equipped with ready-to-play mass as he's already tipping the scales at 200 pounds. Effective as both an inside and outside runner as he's quick to chart a course and charge forward. Fast feet allow him to side-step trouble as he frequently dances around would-be tacklers in the backfield and turns negative plays into positive plays. Core strength and a lower pad level routinely negate arm tackles while full-speed cuts make it even harder for defenders to get him on the ground, especially when he breaks through the first wave of obstacles. Hasn't caught a ton of passes at the prep level, but has proven to be a tricky cover at offseason camps and looks to have true three-down potential as his physicality will only continue to give him an advantage in pass protection. Overall, should be viewed as a gifted ball carrier that can be a multi-year impact player on Saturdays and provide valuable minutes as early as Year 1. Must avoid setbacks and remain hungry, but profiles as a future NFL Draft pick with his size, testing and feel for the position. Hiter is rated as the No. 9 player in the country according to the 247Sports Composite, regardless of position. He's made it to Ann Arbor multiple times and has a strong relationship with running backs coach Tony Alford. The Vols remain the primary threat.
