Penang Cracks Down on Durian Fraud in Balik Pulau
State Agrotechnology, Food Security and Cooperative Development Committee chairman Fahmi Zainol said yesterday that his office had collaborated with police, the Department of Agriculture, the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) and the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Service (MAQIS) to set up roadblocks to detain agricultural products that do not comply with regulations.
'This operation is being carried out due to the issue of durians from outside Penang being brought into the state by unscrupulous traders to sell the fruit under the Balik Pulau durian brand. This issue was raised during the last State Assembly session.
'This restriction was also imposed to inspect vegetables and fruits to ensure they comply with the GPL (Grading, Packaging and Labelling) 2008 Regulations under FAMA ACT 141. Yesterday itself, three violation notices related to GPL were issued,' he said in a statement today.
The GPL 2008 Regulations require that agricultural products must be graded, packaged and labelled before being marketed.
The GPLs issued yesterday were the first of such imposed on wholesalers, who will face a maximum fine of up to RM25,000.
Fahmi said the roadblock carried out from 8 pm to 11.30 pm yesterday was also the first of its kind held in Penang and will be implemented again at different locations in the future, to reinforce the state's commitment in protecting local farmers and consumers.
Balik Pulau is famed for its many durian orchards, which produce the finest of varieties, such as Black Thorn, Red Prawn, Tupai King and Musang King.

MPAJ to hold disciplinary committee meeting over bribery case involving department head
PETALING JAYA: Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) will initiate a Disciplinary Committee Meeting following the case of a department head charged with accepting RM30,000 in bribes. MPAJ deputy president Hasrolnizam Shaari said it would first need to obtain the official report from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). 'Further action will depend on the decision of the relevant committee," he said briefly when contacted. It was reported on Wednesday (July 2) that Ahmad Alhairi Mohamed Yusuf, 47, who is MPAJ Buildings and Architecture Department director, was charged on two counts of bribery amounting to RM30,000, two years ago. Both offences were allegedly committed at a Maybank branch in Taiping, within the Larut, Matang and Selama district He pleaded not guilty at the Ipoh Sessions Court in Perak. Both charges were made under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum sentence of two years' imprisonment or a fine, or both, upon conviction. Judge Meor Sulaiman allowed the accused to be released on bail of RM10,000 with one surety and imposed a condition for the accused to report to the Selangor MACC office on the first Saturday of every month. He also ordered the accused to immediately surrender his international passport to the court for safekeeping until the case is concluded. The court set Aug 19 for case mention and document submission.

Federal court grants RM50k bail to businessmen in organised crime case
PUTRAJAYA: The Federal Court has approved bail of RM50,000 each for two businessmen facing charges of involvement in an organised crime group, pending their trial. A three-member panel, led by Federal Court judge Tan Sri Nallini Pathmanathan, delivered the decision in a 2-1 majority ruling. The court imposed strict conditions, requiring the accused to wear electronic monitoring devices and remain within their home compounds. They must also seek police permission before leaving their residences and report to the nearest police station biweekly. Exceptions were made for hospital visits related to their medical conditions. Justice Nallini noted that the bail approval was primarily due to the defendants' health issues and the prison system's inability to provide adequate medical care. S. Hemanathan, 31, uses a wheelchair and suffers from diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol, while N. Nithiyan, 39, has ischemic heart disease and other cardiovascular risks. Defence counsel Datuk Rajpal Singh argued that inconsistent prison treatment could worsen their conditions, potentially leading to life-threatening complications. Deputy Public Prosecutor Ng Siew Wee countered that both men had received necessary medical attention and their conditions were stable. The duo was charged in May 2023 under Section 130V of the Penal Code, linked to their alleged involvement in 'Geng TR' at a seafood restaurant in Jeram, Selangor.
