Scientists make key breakthrough that could save staple foods from worsening crisis: 'This will revolutionize the way we think about agriculture'
An international team led by researchers from Monash University in Australia has developed a new model for thermosensing plants that redefines previously held theories about how plants sense and respond to temperature.
Their findings, published in the journal Science, explain that instead of using a single "thermometer" to sense temperature, like humans do, plants have a decentralized genetic network of proteins and biological processes.
A changing climate has already affected crop yields and plant health, which makes this shift in perspective about how plants deal with temperature shifts extremely useful.
"Understanding how plants naturally integrate temperature into their growth and defence systems opens the door to precision breeding and AI-assisted approaches to enhance crop resilience," said lead researcher Professor Sureshkumar Balasubramanian.
"Effectively, this means we can grow designer crops that are tailored to the local climate of a particular region."
A United Nations report has warned that in the next 30 years, food supplies and food security could be threatened by the negative impacts of a warming planet. Action needs to be taken to mitigate the effects and bolster the food system's resilience.
There have been various advancements in helping plants deal with these climate shifts, including using zinc to protect plants from heat and slowing down the plant aging process through genetic engineering.
Around a decade's worth of research into farming practices has shown that reduced tilling and more varied crops can help soil retain more nitrogen, which is essential to growth.
Sorghum, which is a naturally resistant cereal grain, is being studied to better understand its molecular structure, which could help improve breeding practices for other plants.
The results of this new comprehensive review about how plants sense temperatures can offer solutions to a broad range of plant species across different regions. This could help farmers breed resilient crops specifically tailored to their locality.

"Now that we have been able to identify exactly which elements within the plants are temperature-responsive, we can genetically manipulate them with greater accuracy," said Dr Sridevi Sureshkumar.
"We can determine the specific combinations of manipulations that can produce bespoke solutions. Think of it like personalised medicine but for plants; this will revolutionize the way we think about agriculture moving forward."

There's Fungus Among Us. But Where Exactly?
The world's biological riches are not evenly distributed. Instead, much of Earth's plant and animal life is concentrated in a small number of biodiversity hot spots — from the tropical rainforests of the Amazon to the alpine meadows of the Himalayas — that have earned enormous scientific and conservation attention. Now, new research suggests that more of these critical hot spots could be hiding beneath our feet — undocumented and largely unprotected. On Wednesday, an international team of scientists unveiled a global underground atlas, mapping the biodiversity of organisms known as mycorrhizal fungi. The fungi, which live in and on plant roots, form vast underground networks and perform critical ecosystem services, transporting nutrients to plants, storing carbon, bolstering soil health and helping crops survive environmental shocks and stresses. Using machine learning models, the scientists predicted that rich reservoirs of these fungi lie hidden in some unexpected places, including the Alaskan tundra and Mediterranean woodlands and scrublands. The dense Amazonian jungle did not stand out as a fungal biodiversity hot spot, but the neighboring savanna, the Brazilian Cerrado, did. 'The Amazon of the underground is not actually in the Amazon rainforest,' said Michael Van Nuland, the lead data scientist at the Society for the Protection of Underground Networks, a research organization that led the mapping effort. NetZeroNitrogen wants bacteria to replace synthetic fertilizer on farm fields
Synthetic fertilizer is a modern wonder, helping to feed billions of people, but it's not without its costs. Fertilizer runoff from farm fields has led to dead zones in oceans around the world, where low oxygen levels have starved normally teeming coastal waters of life itself. Eliminating synthetic fertilizers is a tall order, but one startup thinks that its bacteria can eliminate up to half of it, all while undercutting fertilizer on cost. NetZeroNitrogen has developed a suite of bacterial strains that is applied directly to the seed and allows the plant to get nitrogen from the atmosphere instead of chemicals. 'This is a precision sniper approach,' Justin Hughes, co-founder and CEO of NetZeroNitrogen, told TechCrunch. 'In contrast to fertilizer, where you spread it all over the field and effectively hope some hits the target, a kind of shotgun approach.' The startup recently raised a $6.6 million seed round led by World Fund and Azolla Ventures, the company exclusively told TechCrunch. NetZeroNitrogen's bacteria are the product of over a decade of research on the part of Gary Devine, who has been studying naturally occurring nitrogen-fixing strains. Hughes pointed out that the company's bacteria aren't genetically modified. 'We're not on any particular moral high ground about that. It just means the regulatory pathway is a lot easier,' he said. 'It opens you up to organic markets as well.' Once the plant dies, the bacteria dies with it. It's partially a marriage of convenience: to apply the bacterial strains, it's currently easiest to dunk seeds in water containing them. Rice just so happens to be soaked before planting. 'You just mix it in at that point and you're done,' Hughes said. Because the company can use large fermenters to grow its strains, it can make its bacterial amendment for less than an equivalent amount of synthetic fertilizer, Hughes said. 'The costs of production of biomanufacturing are far, far lower than the Haber-Bosch process, especially once you start to scale up,' he said, referring to the process widely used to make fertilizer. The goal, Hughes added, is to sell NetZeroNitrogen's bacteria to farmers for at least $50 per hectare less than they spend on synthetic fertilizers. In regions like Southeast Asia, that could mean a 30% to 40% discount, he said. For now, synthetic fertilizer won't be disappearing. 'Unfortunately, we can't quite solve 100% of the problem yet,' Hughes said. 'But of the proportion that we can solve, it's effectively 100% efficiency.'

Cannabis And Psychedelics Seen As Effective For Eating Disorders, Study Finds

A new study has found that cannabis and psychedelics are perceived to be the most effective drugs that help alleviate eating disorder symptoms. A group of researchers from the University of Sydney has conducted a survey on over 6,000 people suffering from eight eating disorders, such as bulimia, anorexia, and binge-eating disorder, and found that most of them rely on cannabis and psychedelics to help alleviate their symptoms. Published on JAMA Network Open-Psychiatry this week, the study tried to understand which prescription and nonprescription drugs are used by people with eating disorders, and how they are associated with symptoms. To do so, participants, diagnosed with eating disorders and mainly from English-speaking countries, completed an online survey on recent prescribed and nonprescribed drug use, as well as perceived benefits and harms. Initially, 7,648 respondents were recruited; 6,612 completed demographics, and 5,123 finished the survey. The findings of the survey showed that overall, the best-rated drugs for eating disorder symptoms among respondents were psilocybin, cannabis, and lysergic acid diethylamide. For example, for respondents with anorexia, cannabis received the highest rating. When asked to identify their drug of choice for self-medicating eating disorder symptoms, the most popular drug among respondents was cannabis, but when normalized by number of users, fluoxetine, an antidepressant, ranked highest. Among 6,136 respondents, prescription psychotropics were rated highest for mental health. Psilocybin, LSD, and cannabis also received strong ratings. 'A striking outcome was the favorable self-reported ratings of psychedelics and cannabis for alleviating ED symptoms, eclipsing the ratings of commonly prescribed psychotropics,' the study reads. Can Cannabis Help Alleviate Eating Disorder Symptoms? The study also highlighted that daily cannabis users reported perceived benefits for their eating disorder symptoms. Researchers said that 'there is scant research around the use of cannabinoids in individuals with eating disorders apart from small trials supporting the efficacy of dronabinol, which is synthetic tetrahydrocannabinol, in those with anorexia nervosa.' They also added that cannabis may benefit people with restrictive and food-aversive eating disorders, like anorexia nervosa and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder, 'by increasing the hedonic value of food.' This is in line with previous studies on the effects of cannabis on appetite. A study published last year showed that mediobasal hypothalamus (MBH), a region in the brain that regulates various physiological processes, controls increased appetite following cannabis use. In contrast, cannabis received poor ratings from people with bulimia and binge-eating disorder, likely because its appetite-stimulating effects can trigger or worsen binge-and-purge behaviors, thereby intensifying the symptoms of the eating disorder. Psilocybin and LSD were consistently rated highly across all diagnostic groups for their ability to improve eating disorder symptoms, enhance overall mental health, and be well tolerated. However, the study has several limitations. The survey primarily included participants from high-income, English-speaking countries with internet access. It may have also attracted people with eating disorders who are more inclined toward new ways to treat their eating disorder symptoms or have positive attitudes or prior positive experiences with drugs. Furthermore, diagnoses were based on self-report rather than formal clinical assessment, and comorbid conditions were not evaluated. Additionally, recall bias may have influenced participants' reports of drug use and symptoms. Therefore, because some findings are based on small sample sizes within specific diagnostic related to eating disorders and drug-use groups, the researchers highlighted that this study's results 'should be interpreted as exploratory rather than definitive.'
