NBA legend Phil Jackson rips league for scheduling games on religious holidays
Jackson, an 11-time NBA champion as a coach and two-time champion as a player, posted the criticism on Easter Sunday, when the league had four games in the first round of the NBA Playoffs scheduled.
"Again the NBA tests faith by playing multiple games on Christmas and Easter… sacred days," the post on X read.
The post was Jackson's first in over a year, but his criticism of the NBA is not unique.
In 2023, Jackson made headlines when he said he stopped watching the NBA following the COVID-19 pandemic because the league had gotten too political.
"They went into the lockout year, and they did something that was kind of wonky. They did a bubble down in Orlando, and all the teams that could qualify went down there, and stayed down there," he said at the time during an appearance on the "Tetragrammaton with Rick Rubin" podcast.
"And they had things on their backs like 'Justice.' I made a little funny thing like, 'Justice just went to the basket and Equal Opportunity just knocked him down.'... So, my grandkids thought that was pretty funny to play up those names. So, I couldn't watch that."
Jackson was referring to the NBA allowing players to wear social justice messages on the backs of their jerseys during the bubble in Orlando. He added at the time that he felt the league was catering to a "certain audience."
"They didn't know it was turning other people off. People want to see sports as non-political."
The NBA and NFL continue to compete for viewership on Christmas Day. This year, the NFL announced that three games will be played on the holiday following the success of last season's double-header on Netflix.

Former New England Patriots three-time Super Bowl champion Julian Edelman shared his honest thoughts on what sets Mike Vrabel apart from other NFL coaches. According to Edelman, the Patriots coach is a perfect blend of brawn and brains. "He's the rare case of being a tough guy that's really smart. It's weird. Orioles acquire Alex Jackson from Yankees after Gary Sánchez becomes their 4th catcher on IL
ATLANTA (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles acquired Alex Jackson from the New York Yankees on Sunday after Gary Sánchez became their fourth catcher on the injured list. Sánchez left Saturday night's game against Atlanta with right knee pain and an MRI revealed a sprain. Interim manager Tony Mansolino said he did not have a timetable for Sánchez's recovery. Baltimore, which has 14 players on the IL, sent the Yankees international signing bonus pool allocation and a player to be named or cash. Two-time All-Star Adley Rutschman has not played since June 19 because of a left oblique strain, Maverick Handley has been on the concussion IL since a collision at the plate with the Yankees' Jazz Chisholm Jr. on June 22 and Chadwick Tromp hasn't played since June 30 because of a lower back strain. Interim manager Tony Mansolino said he did not have a timetable for Sánchez's recovery. Jacob Stallings, who replaced Sánchez in Saturday's 9-6 win over the Braves in 10 innings, and Jackson, who was with the team for Sunday's game in Atlanta, will form the restructured depth chart at catcher. Stallings' contract was selected from Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday. Mansolino said he is confident Jackson and Stallings, who started on Sunday, have the experience needed 'to quickly catch up and make themselves an asset.' Jackson, 29, hit .226 with 10 homers in 44 games for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season. He made his major league debut with Atlanta in 2019 and also has played for Miami and Milwaukee. 'Obviously you have a whole lot of time in the big leagues now with multiple teams,' Mansolino said, adding the Yankees are a 'very forward-thinking organization.' Infielder Jorge Mateo, who last played June 6 due to left elbow inflammation, was transferred to the 60-day IL to clear a roster spot for Jackson. ___
