WhatsApp is rolling out a trio of monetisation tools within its Updates tab, signalling a significant shift in strategy while keeping its core service intact. Businesses and creator‑led Channels can now access new advertising options, subscribers can unlock exclusive content, and adverts will begin appearing in status updates – all isolated from personal chats.
Approximately 1.5 billion users engage with the Updates feed daily, where ephemeral Status posts and one‑way Channels feature prominently. Meta, the parent company, is instituting three monetisation pillars: paid subscriptions to Channels, promoted placement for selected Channels, and targeted ads in Status postings.
Paid Channel subscriptions enable creators and organisations to offer exclusive content to subscribed users. Channel owners can set monthly fees, receiving payment directly; Meta has confirmed it will forgo revenue share this year. Users continue to access non‑premium Channels at no cost, preserving inclusivity.

Promoted Channels afford businesses and creators the ability to gain visibility within the Channels directory. These paid promotions echo Facebook and Instagram's ad features, enabling targeted outreach to engaged audiences on WhatsApp.
Advertising in Status posts marks WhatsApp's first foray into native ad content. Businesses will now have the opportunity to insert sponsored Status updates visible alongside friends and family updates, with direct messaging links for user engagement.
Meta assures these monetisation measures will not breach WhatsApp's end‑to‑end encryption on personal chats, calls, and Status. The Updates feed is portrayed as a separate, user‑opt‑in zone that won't affect the private messaging interface. Ad targeting will be based on broad demographic signals—such as language, city, activity within Updates, and cross‑app preferences if linked via Meta's Accounts Center—excluding personal message content.
Meta highlights ongoing user trust as a cornerstone, emphasising that phone numbers will not be shared with advertisers and ad delivery does not draw from personal or group conversations. This assurance follows backlash in 2021 concerning alleged T&Cs changes, underscoring the fragility of confidence in WhatsApp's promises.
Meta's move is clearly motivated by financial incentives. With ad revenue soar­ing—for instance, Meta reported US $160.6 billion in ad income in 2024—and WhatsApp yet to be fully monetised, the company plans to leverage its massive user base without compromising privacy guarantees.
This transformation mirrors WhatsApp's evolution in Asia, where apps like WeChat serve as multifunctional ecosystems encompassing commerce, messaging, and media. Meta's vision is to expand WhatsApp's utility by integrating business and creator economy tools in non‑intrusive areas.
Despite assurances, the roll‑out has sparked debate over potential shifts in user experience. Some long‑time users perceive this as a betrayal by an app founded on a minimalist, privacy‑first ethos – 'No ads! No games! No gimmicks!' as WhatsApp's founders once promised. Timid but discernible resistance emerged on social media platforms like Reddit, with a fraction of users threatening migration to platforms like Signal or Telegram.
Meta is mitigating these concerns through phased deployment, global scheduling over coming months, and strict differentiation between private and monetised environments. Advertisers and business leaders, however, are optimistic: the Updates tab presents a potent venue for visibility, especially for small businesses traditionally underrepresented in mainstream ad environments.
WhatsApp's approach marks its boldest commercial pivot yet, with strategic calculus focused on preserving encryption while introducing revenue‑generating mechanisms. The company's ability to maintain trust, eye potential regulatory scrutiny, and adapt to user response will determine whether this evolution strengthens WhatsApp's role as both a private messaging app and a platform for business and entertainment.

Yasser Shawky explores why trusted, AI-ready data is essential for innovation, scalability, and long-term business value. I was recently speaking to my mother about what she'd been cooking lately, and was amused to learn that she now uses ChatGPT to help her come up with new recipes. I couldn't help but smile at how pervasive AI has already become. When even our parents are comfortable treating LLMs as their culinary consultants, you know the technology has crossed a noteworthy threshold. It also got me thinking. In this case, the advice she received was useful. But what if the AI hallucinated, as it sometimes does, and suggested swapping sumac for cinnamon in a delicate Middle Eastern dish? That would almost certainly ruin the flavour. And what if the same thing happened in a more serious context like a home remedy, financial advice, or supplement recommendation? The consequences could be dire. That small, charming exchange has stayed with me, because it's a fitting metaphor for what I see happening across the Middle East as organisations rush to capitalise on AI. Like my mother with her recipes, businesses see the promise and want to seize it. But without proper visibility into the inputs AI models are drawing from, and without governance over the data that fuels them, they're exposing themselves to risk. AI's Dot-Com Moment With AI adoption proceeding at breakneck pace, it might feel like we're venturing deep into uncharted territory. And while that's undoubtedly true, the IT industry has stood at a similar inflection point before. Just over two decades ago, the world watched as the dot-com boom of the late 1990s rewrote the rules of business almost overnight. In that exhuberent environment, many crashed and burned, but those that invested in solid infrastructure, user experience, and sustainable business models emerged as titans, still standing strong today. Now, we're living through AI's own dot-com moment and just as with the internet revolution, the winners won't be those who leap in first. Winners will be those who lay the right foundations, especially when it comes to data. Why Data, Not Just AI, Should Be the Starting Point It's easy to be dazzled by the tech itself. Large language models, generative AI, machine learning, have entered daily dialogue. But these are just enablers. The true foundation of any successful AI implementation is a strong data platform. It's a truth the industry has long known but often skirts around, poor data quality destroys business value. According to Gartner, the average cost of bad data is estimated at US$10.8 million per year per organisation. The reasons? Duplicate entries, outdated records, inconsistent formatting, missing fields, lack of data governance and lineage, and fragmented systems. Every Chief Data Officer is all too familiar with these challenges. But flip the equation and the potential is transformative. When data is accurate, complete, consistent, timely and relevant, what we at Informatica call 'AI-ready', then use cases that once seemed overly complex suddenly become achievable and durable. That's when data chaos is turned into business value. It's not just about better models. It's about creating a single, authoritative view of enterprise data that everyone, from executives to frontline staff, can trust. Like a chef who knows exactly what's in their pantry and how fresh it is, with data you can trust, you can cook up something extraordinary, without unpleasant surprises. One Foundation, Many Use Cases Let's explore this in practice by taking the example of an innovative bank. Its marketing team is keen to leverage AI to offer hyper-personalised financial products. They want to know when a customer might be buying a home, starting a business, or sending their child to university so they can provide timely, tailored offers. Meanwhile, their fraud detection team wants to use AI to spot suspicious patterns in real-time, saving customers the need to self-report. Two vastly different use cases. But they share one foundational need: up-to-date, accurate behavioural and transactional data. The marketing team can't personalise without knowing the customer. The fraud team can't protect without understanding what 'normal' looks like. If each team tries to build its own data pipeline, you end up with duplication, inefficiency, and inconsistent insights. Instead, by investing in a common, trusted data layer, like we at Informatica call turning chaos into business value, you empower every department across the organization to innovate, scale and advance. According to McKinsey, as much as 70% of the effort in developing AI solutions is spent on wrangling and harmonising data. Solve that once, and your entire organisation becomes more agile, more aligned and more AI-ready. Getting Your Data AI-Ready So how do you get there? It starts with acknowledging that data is not just an IT problem, it's a strategic asset belonging to the entire organisation. Preparing your data for AI involves more than cleansing spreadsheets. It requires a robust data governance framework that ensures integrity, compliance and accessibility. It requires scalable infrastructure, ideally cloud-based, that can grow with your ambitions. It requires investment in data literacy, so your people, across all functions, understand how to question, interpret and act on data. Most of all, it requires trust. As Robin Miller, Group Data Manager at Lowell so perfectly put it, 'The vision I describe to my colleagues is that they'll be able to implicitly trust the data that informs them, no matter where in our organisation it comes from.' That trust is what enables action. And in a world moving as fast as ours, trusted action is everything. Long-Term Value over Short-Term Buzz There's no denying the momentum behind AI. But there's a real risk in chasing short-term wins — pilots that can't scale, models that aren't reproducible, projects that promise much but deliver little. What's needed is a long-term mindset. That begins with data. By prioritising data quality and investing in AI-readiness from the ground up, organisations position themselves to move faster, not slower. They create the conditions for innovation to thrive. They accelerate business value by enabling data to flow freely, reliably and securely across systems, departments and applications. And most importantly, they ensure that when the hype cycle inevitably plateaus, their AI investments continue to pay dividends. The European Union braced on Friday for a possible letter from US President Donald Trump, outlining planned duties on his largest trade and investment partner after a broadening of his tariff war in recent days. The EU initially hoped to strike a comprehensive trade agreement, including zero-for-zero tariffs on industrial goods, but months of difficult talks have led to the realization it will probably have to settle for an interim agreement and hope something better can still be negotiated. The 27-country bloc is under conflicting pressures as powerhouse Germany urged a quick deal to safeguard its industry, while other EU members, such as France, have said EU negotiators should not cave into a one-sided deal on US terms. After keeping much of the world guessing his intentions, Trump has outlined new tariffs for a number of countries, including allies Japan and South Korea, along with a 50% tariff on copper, and a hike to 35% on Canadian goods. His cascade of tariff orders since returning to the White House has begun generating tens of billions of dollars a month in new revenue for the US government, and data due later on Friday is expected to show collections since inauguration day in January through June have shot past $100 billion - equal to or greater than the largest annual take ever from customs duties. "We remain locked and loaded to sign an agreement with the US. Let's see what happens when our friends in Washington wake up a few hours from now," EU spokesperson Olof Gill told a briefing. A source with knowledge of the US-EU negotiations said an agreement was close, but that it was hard to predict if the EU might still get a letter announcing more tariffs or when any agreement might be finalised. An EU diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the EU was strong when it acted together. "It is important that the pain or gain is distributed equally. We cannot have just one country or sector that takes the win." European shares dipped on Friday as investors awaited word on tariffs for the EU, while US stocks dipped in response to the upsized tariff rate Trump announced for Canada late on Thursday. Gold prices, meanwhile, rose for a third straight session on higher demand for the safe-haven asset. Investors appear increasingly inured to Trump's tariff announcements after having near-panic reactions to the earliest announcements in late winter and early spring. Still, the jacked-up rates Trump unveiled out of the blue this week on Brazil and then Canada are emblematic of his unpredictable approach to rolling out the levies. The 35% tariff on Canada is an increase from the current 25% rate he had assigned and is a blow to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who was seeking to agree a trade pact with Washington. According to Trump, the new rate will take effect on August 1 and could go up further if Canada retaliates. "Throughout the current trade negotiations with the United States, the Canadian government has steadfastly defended our workers and businesses. We will continue to do so as we work towards the revised deadline of August 1," Carney said on X. The EU has drawn up countermeasures against Trump's tariffs, but has not imposed them. An initial 21 billion euros ($24.5 billion) of levies on US imports due in April was suspended before taking effect. Another package, on some 72 billion euros of US imports, could also be applied. "Basically, if a political decision is made to extend the suspension, then we'll extend the suspension," Gill said. "If we need to unsuspend it, we can do that, you know, at the drop of a hat," he added. Elsewhere US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Kuala Lumpur on Friday, as the two powers vied to push their agendas in Asia. Both sides described the meeting as constructive. China this week warned the United States against reinstating hefty levies on its goods next month and Beijing has also threatened to retaliate against nations that strike deals with the United States to cut China out of supply chains. Trump has periodically railed against the EU, saying in February that it was "formed to screw the United States" and asking why Europe exports so many cars but buys so few from the US in return. His biggest grievance is the US merchandise trade deficit with the EU, which in 2024 amounted to $235 billion, according to US Census Bureau data. The EU has repeatedly pointed to the US surplus in services that in part redresses the balance. The potential escalation between the EU and the US is a big deal for financial markets, said Joseph Capurso, head of international economics at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. "If you get something similar to (the U.S.-China trade war in April), that's going to be very destabilizing." Agencies

Bitcoin has reached an all-time high, surpassing $118,000 as a flood of money moves into spot bitcoin ETFs, which have opened up cryptocurrency investing to millions. A soft US dollar and the digital currency friendliness of President Donald Trump's administration has also helped to push the price of bitcoin to unprecedented levels recently. Last month the Senate passed legislation that would regulate a form of cryptocurrency known as stablecoins, the first of what the industry hopes will be a wave of bills to bolster its legitimacy and reassure consumers. The fast-moving legislation comes on the heels of a 2024 campaign cycle in which the crypto industry ranked among the top political spenders in the country, underscoring its growing influence in Washington and beyond. Known as the GENIUS Act, the bill would establish guardrails and consumer protections for stablecoins, a type of cryptocurrency typically pegged to the US dollar. The acronym stands for "Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for US Stablecoins.' Next week the House of Representatives will be considering the GENIUS Act as part of Congress' efforts to strengthen the country's crypto position. US-listed crypto stocks jumped on Friday as bitcoin surged to a record high in the run-up to a landmark week that could cement policy wins for the crypto industry. Starting July 14, the House of Representatives will debate three major crypto bills that are likely to provide the industry the regulatory framework in the US that it has long demanded. The lawmakers will discuss the Genius Act, the Clarity Act and the Anti-CBDC Surveillance State Act during the "Crypto Week", amid growing bets that the industry's strained ties with Washington is beginning to thaw. This is a sharp reversal of fortune for a sector that had once threatened to flee offshore, citing a hostile environment and heavy-handed enforcement in the US "We expect capital that was previously sidelined due to regulatory uncertainty to re-enter," said Jag Kooner, head of derivatives at crypto exchange Bitfinex. "Even if final passage stalls, the optics of legislative engagement are bullish." Regulatory clarity could encourage more companies to adopt bitcoin in their treasury strategies, analysts said, similar to firms such as Strategy, which has accumulated the cryptocurrency as a long-term store of value. "We're seeing bitcoin treasury strategies proliferate across companies, which reflects growing institutional confidence in BTC as a balance-sheet asset," said Nicolai Sondergaard, research analyst at Nansen. Bitcoin's surge has triggered a broader rally in the crypto market, with strong and sustained inflows into the related spot exchange-traded funds driving prices higher, he said. The world's largest cryptocurrency was last up 4% at $118,071.19, taking its gains for the year to 26%. The digital asset has surged nearly 41% in the last three months. Bitcoin buyer and holder Strategy rose 3.8%, while crypto miners Riot Platforms, Hut 8 and Mara Holdings gained between 1.5% and 3%. "Investors are racing to take positions ahead of the extra publicity this event could attract," said Dan Coatsworth, investment analyst at AJ Bell, referring to the Crypto Week. Rising confidence in bitcoin is now resulting in investors chasing higher returns in smaller tokens. Ether, the second-largest token, was last up 6.5%, while XRP and Solana gained 12% and 2%, respectively. The sector's total market value has swelled to about $3.7 trillion, according to data from CoinMarketCap. Bitcoin's sharp rally has also drawn caution from some corners of the market. As crypto gets embedded in the traditional financial system, some analysts warned the hype may be outpacing reality, as it starts to displace gold as the preferred hedge against equities. "The (regulatory) backdrop has supported prices and attention has turned to bitcoin's role in portfolios, with some likening the crypto-asset to 'digital gold'. This moniker is likely premature," said Dirk Willer, Citi's global head of macro, asset allocation and emerging market strategy. With likely volatility ahead, some analysts have cautioned investors to pause and weigh their time horizons before jumping in. "It's hard not to be optimistic about bitcoin at this moment in time, but the risk of a fall in price or short-term pullback still exists," said Simon Peters, crypto analyst at online brokerage eToro. Critics have argued the Trump administration is conceding too much to the crypto industry. "I'm concerned that what my Republican colleagues are aiming for is another industry handout that gives the crypto lobby exactly its wish list," Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren said earlier this week. She urged Congress to bar public officials, including the President, from issuing, backing or profiting from crypto tokens. Trump has faced criticism from political rivals and ethics experts over potential for conflicts of interest regarding his family's crypto ventures. Reuters
