Assault on Constitution's soul: Opposition slams RSS' view on Preamble

Several opposition parties on Friday denounced RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale's call to review the words 'socialist' and 'secular' in the Preamble, terming it a "deliberate assault" on the soul of the Constitution.
The attack came a day after the RSS proposed reviewing the two words, saying they were included during the Emergency and were never part of the Constitution drafted by B R Ambedkar.
While the Congress saw it as a "deliberate assault" on the soul of the Constitution and claimed the RSS-BJP had never accepted Ambedkar's Constitution, the CPI(M) said the demand exposes the RSS' long-standing objective of subverting it.Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said the mask of the RSS has come off again as they want 'Manusmriti'. "The Constitution irks them because it speaks of equality, secularism, and justice," he said in a post in Hindi on X."The RSS-BJP doesn't want the Constitution; they want 'Manusmriti'. They aim to strip the marginalized and the poor of their rights and enslave them again. Snatching a powerful weapon like the Constitution from them is their real agenda," he alleged.
"The RSS should stop dreaming... we will never let them succeed. Every patriotic Indian will defend the Constitution until their last breath," the former Congress chief asserted.CPI(M) leader and Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan said Hosabale's call is a "brazen attempt to dismantle the core ideals of our Republic"."Invoking the Emergency to discredit these principles is a deceitful move, especially when the RSS colluded with the Indira Gandhi government during that time for its own survival. To use that period now to undermine the Constitution reflects sheer hypocrisy and political opportunism."Secularism and socialism are not additions; they define India. Every citizen who believes in democracy must raise their voice against this communal agenda," Vijayan said on X.The Left parties and RJD alleged that Hosabale's proposal was part of a conspiracy to change the Constitution.Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said the BJP/RSS attacked Ambedkar, Nehru, and others involved in the framing of the Constitution from November 30, 1949, onwards. "In the RSS' own words, the Constitution was not inspired by Manusmriti," he said in a post on X."The RSS and the BJP have repeatedly given the call for a new Constitution. This was Mr (Narendra) Modi's campaign cry during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The people of India decisively rejected this cry. Yet the demands for changing the basic structure of the Constitution continue to be made by the RSS ecosystem," Ramesh said.
Sharing the Supreme Court's November 25, 2024, judgment on the issue, he said, "Would it be asking too much to request him to take the trouble to read it?" In a post on X from its official handle, the Congress alleged the RSS-BJP's ideology stands in direct opposition to the Indian Constitution."RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale has openly called for the removal of the words 'socialist' and 'secular' from the Preamble. This is not just a suggestion -- it is a deliberate assault on the soul of our Constitution," it said."It is part of a long-standing conspiracy to dismantle Babasaheb Ambedkar's vision for a just, inclusive and democratic India -- something the RSS-BJP has always been plotting. Let us not forget: when the Constitution was adopted, the RSS rejected it. They didn't just oppose it, they burnt it." The Congress said the people saw through their agenda and gave them a resounding answer."Now, they have returned to their old playbook. But let it be known: The Congress will stand as an unbreakable wall against any attempt to undermine the Constitution. Jai Samvidhan," it asserted.Party General Secretary (Organisation) K C Venugopal mounted a scathing attack on the RSS and the BJP, saying, "The RSS' single-minded focus to destroy the Constitution is never hidden for too long. Beyond the BJP's lip service to the Constitution, their hidden agenda has always been to distort and destroy our Constitution -- because it stands against the core fascist beliefs of the RSS-BJP."
"A senior RSS member surely knows that the Supreme Court declared socialism and secularism to be part of the basic structure of the Constitution. Yet, to take this stand is a clear insult to the Constitution, a rejection of its values, and a direct attack on the Supreme Court of India as well," he said on X. The MP from Kerala's Alappuzha added that the people of India were very much aware of the "devious means deployed by the RSS to spread poison and divide this country". "We will never let them succeed in this mission, and will defend the Constitution to the hilt," he stressed.
Congress deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha Pramod Tiwari said, "Once again, the truth slipped out. The hidden agenda of the BJP and RSS is now out in the open. They want to remove the core values of secularism and socialism from the Constitution." The BJP hit back at the Congress, accusing it of being behind all the violations of India's Constitution since Independence and asked the party to apologise for its Emergency-era atrocities on people instead of resorting to diversion.The issue before the country is the violation of people's fundamental rights by the Congress government during the Emergency, said BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi.Among other opposition parties, RJD president Lalu Prasad, who claimed that social justice and communal harmony are his guiding principles, voiced his anguish on X by terming the RSS a "casteist" outfit.The RJD supremo also said, "They do not have the guts to cast an evil eye on the Constitution and reservations provided therein. Why are people with an unjust character so full of hatred for democracy and Babasaheb Ambedkar's Constitution?" Party MP Manoj Kumar Jha said, "Perhaps he (Hosabale) hasn't read it; I would advise him to seriously read the Constituent Assembly debates. Socialism and secularism were integral parts of our Constitution."
In a statement, the CPI(M) Politburo said the inclusion of 'socialism' and 'secularism' in the Preamble is not an arbitrary addition and reflects the core values for which freedom fighters sacrificed their lives. "The Communist Party of India (Marxist) strongly denounces the proposal made by the RSS general secretary to remove the words 'socialist' and 'secular' from the Preamble of the Indian Constitution. This proposal exposes the RSS's long-standing objective of subverting the Constitution and its intent to transform India into a Hindu Rashtra, in pursuit of its Hindutva project." "It is the height of hypocrisy for the RSS, which played no role in the freedom movement, to now advocate for the removal of these foundational principles. That it cannot tolerate the values cherished by our martyrs betrays its reactionary, anti-people, and divisive ideology," the Left party said.It "firmly" opposed "any attempt to alter the core values enshrined in our Constitution. We appeal to the people to remain vigilant and resolutely resist all such efforts by the RSS and its protege BJP." CPI General Secretary D Raja said everyone knows what RSS wants. "Everyone knows it is opposed to constitution/why they spoke of '400-paar' and that is why defending constitution became the central issue for opposition parties." Hosabale, while addressing an event on the Emergency, said on Thursday that "the preamble of the Constitution Baba Saheb Ambedkar made never had these words." "During the Emergency, when fundamental rights were suspended, Parliament did not work, and judiciary became lame, then these words were added." The RSS leader said discussions were held on this issue later but no effort was made to remove them from the Preamble. "So whether they should remain in the Preamble should be considered," he had added.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh, however, sought to defend Hosabale's call, saying any right-thinking citizen would endorse it because everybody knows that these words were not part of the original Constitution written by Ambedkar. PTI

Convicted former BJP MLA seeks pardon from Governor, Congress questions ‘political duplicity'
Former Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Kanwar Lal Meena, convicted and sentenced to three years' imprisonment in a 20-year-old criminal case, has moved a mercy petition before Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Bagade seeking pardon. As part of the process, the opinion of police officials in Jhalawar, where the case was registered in 2005, has been sought. The former Anta MLA's Assembly membership was terminated last month after the Rajasthan High Court upheld his conviction and sentence and he surrendered in the trial court following the Supreme Court's refusal to give any relief. The delay in the decision on Meena's disqualification had led to a political slugfest between the ruling BJP and the Opposition Congress. The Congress and civil rights groups in Jaipur on Friday (June 27, 2025) questioned 'political duplicity' in the matter while affirming that initiating the process for remission of Meena's sentence amounted to adopting double standards. Congress MLA and Leader of Opposition Tika Ram Jully said there seemed to be one law for BJP members and another for common people. The case against Meena pertained to an incident in February 2005, when he arrived with seven associates at the venue of a protest by the villagers in Jhalawar district demanding a Deputy Sarpanch repoll and brandished a revolver at the Sub-Divisional Magistrate. He threatened the SDM and asked him to either announce a repoll within two minutes or get killed. This was a rare instance for a sitting MLA being disqualified in Rajasthan, though it is not the first case. The Anta seat in Baran district became vacant after Meena's disqualification, about which the Election Commission has been informed. By-election for the constituency, to be held within six months, is yet to be announced. Some BJP leaders had favoured seeking pardon or commutation of Meena's sentence to less than two years by the Governor before his disqualification. After the termination of his membership, the mercy petition has been filed under Article 161 of the Constitution, which empowers the Governor to 'grant pardons, etc., and to suspend, remit or commute sentences in certain cases'. The Governor's office has sought a report from the State government on Meena's petition. Following this, Jhalawar Superintendent of Police Richa Tomar has sent letters to Station House Officers of Manohar Thana and Aklera police stations, asking them for their opinion, along with the comments of the Circle Officer. Mr. Jully said the true face of the BJP, which was pretending to be the protector of democracy, had been exposed in Meena's case. 'Is this privilege reserved only for the BJP members? Initiating such a process for a sacked MLA convicted by the court is tantamount to the murder of democracy,' he said, adding that the BJP wanted to run two laws in the country. The Soochna Evum Rozgar Adhikar Abhiyan demanded that any process to pardon Meena be stopped with immediate effect, and 'strict ethical standards and accountability system' be ensured for MLAs and public representatives. 'The attempt to save Meena is a clear instance of misuse of power, which not only insults the basic spirit of the Constitution and the justice system, but also sets double standards for those in power and the people,' Adhikar's member Nikhil Dey said. However, Law Minister Jogaram Patel told journalists during his visit to Jodhpur that the filing of a mercy petition before the Governor was a constitutional process to which every convicted person had a right. 'The Governor reviews the petition as per the legal provisions and takes a decision. If the sentence is pardoned, Meena's Assembly seat will be restored… If the Governor takes another decision, the situation as it is today will remain the same,' Mr. Patel said.

Uddhav and Raj had on Thursday announced two separate marches, on July 6 and 7 respectively. But according to Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, Raj dialled him Friday and said it would not be good to hold two marches for the Marathi language in this way and a joint movement could have a big impact. Raut said he then spoke to Uddhav, who agreed "without hesitation." Uddhav and Raj Thackeray's joint protest march against what they allege is imposition of Hindi in the state's schools will mostly be from Girgaum Chowpatty to Azad Maidan. Both parties have said it will be non-political and no party flags will be displayed. MNS functionary Sandeep Deshpande and Sena (UBT) MLA Varun Sardesai also met on Friday at a restaurant in Dadar (W), further fuelling speculation that the parties would come together not just for the protest but for BMC polls too. After issuing a GR on June 17 on the third-language policy, govt took two steps back this week, first by saying it would have wide-ranging consultations before finalizing the policy and second by saying the third language would be taught via the play-way method, only orally, in Class 1 and 2, with no textbooks for students and no tests or exams. Raut said Raj initially told him he had no idea about the UBT Sena's march. When he discussed Raj's message of having one march with , Raut said that "he said he too was not in favour of a separate march but as July 6 is Ashadhi Ekadashi, it would be difficult to reach the people. I conveyed this to Raj Thackeray. After talking to Uddhav Thackeray, we suggested July 5 as the date. Raj Thackeray agreed to it after talking to his colleagues… This march will be without any political agenda. Through it, govt will see the strength of Marathi people." Deshpande said, "Raj Thackeray took the initiative and called Sanjay Raut and the date of the march was decided. We are inviting all parties, including Marathi-loving office-bearers of BJP and Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena. It's a good thing the Thackerays are keeping aside political differences and coming together as Marathi manoos. They will decide if they will come together politically. For now, we are focusing on the march. The protest will change the political direction of Maharashtra. The protest is not Raj or Uddhav Thackeray's, it belongs to the Marathi manoos." Sardesai said there was dialogue between Sena (UBT) and MNS. "We are asking everyone to join the protest, so we met to plan the march," he said. Meanwhile, reacting to education minister Dada Bhuse's comments that the third language would be taught via the play-way method, Aaditya Thackeray said on X, "The Education Minister should first go sit in a school and take such lessons! Forcing first-graders to learn three languages already, and that too without books, just oral practice. Are they running a govt or a comedy show? What are they saying, what are they deciding, just listen to yourselves for once. "

‘Socialist', ‘secular' don't reflect India's core cultural values: Chouhan
Jun 28, 2025 05:30 AM IST VARANASI Amid a national debate on whether the words 'Socialist' and 'Secular' should remain in the Preamble of the Indian Constitution, Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Friday invoked India's civilisational ethos to argue that these words do not reflect the country's core cultural values. He came down heavily on the Congress, saying the party should apologise for imposing Emergency in the country 50 years ago. 'Sarva dharma sambhav (equal respect for all religions) is the core of Indian culture, but secularism is not a core value of our was inserted during the Emergency. That is why there should be strong consideration on removing the word 'secularism' from the Indian Constitution,' said the minister, responding to a query at a press conference. 'The second word is 'socialism': Sabko apne jaisa maano (treat everyone like yourself), live and let live, the world is one family are the core of India. That is why there is also no need for the word 'socialism'. It's removal should be considered seriously,' added Chouhan. The minister alleged that the Congress amended the Constitution to save its power as well as to impose its ideological agenda. 'The Congress added words like 'secular' and 'socialist' to the Constitution by amending it so that the party could impose its ideological agenda on the nation. This amendment extended the period of Emergency and the President got the right to declare emergency even without prior approval of Parliament,' he said during a press conference. In response to if his ministry was planning to start 'Ladle Kisan scheme' to make sure that farmers don't go away from farming, Chouhan indicated that such a scheme may be started in near future. He said the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan is being run across the country for strengthening agriculture.
