Residents line streets to welcome home Israeli-American hostage
Hundreds of cheering supporters, many waving Israeli flags and holding 'Welcome Home Edan' signs, lined the streets of Tenafly to greet his passing vehicle.
A smiling Mr Alexander held his arm out the passenger-side window to wave and touch the hands of people in the crowd.
The militant group Hamas released Mr Alexander, 21, on May 12 after 584 days. He has been in Israel since he was freed.
Thursday marked his first trip home to Tenafly, the suburb of New York City where he grew up and where his family still lives.
Mr Alexander was 19 when militants stormed his base in Israel and dragged him into the Gaza Strip.
He was among the 251 people taken hostage in Hamas' attack on October 7 2023.
Mr Alexander moved to Israel in 2022 after finishing high school and enlisted in the military.
Since his capture, there's been a huge outpouring of support for him in Tenafly, located in a county with a large Jewish and Israeli-American population.
The community held regular walks to raise awareness about him and the other hostages. Many gathered in May to celebrate his release.
'Edan's return is the return of everybody's child, every organisation, every family, every Israeli family, and non-Israeli, and non-Jews,' Orly Chen, a Tenafly resident, told CBS News New York on Thursday.

Hamas caught on camera torturing Gazans, COGAT reveals
The IDF previously released footage of Hamas torturing Gazans during an execution in Gaza City in June. The IDF published footage on Thursday of Hamas torturing civilians in the Gaza Strip. Maj.-Gen. Ghassan Alian, the coordinator of the Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), shared the video on the unit's X/Twitter account. In the video compilation, masked members of Hamas can be seen repeatedly beating citizens with metal pipes and the butts of machine guns, punching and kicking clearly wounded people, and shooting individuals in the legs until they can no longer stand. 'Residents of Gaza, the savage and blatant abuse by Hamas, is trampling and destroying your lives. Hamas׳' spectacles of horror, intended to spread terror and brutality, are tools for sowing fear and harming the people of Gaza - all to preserve the group's power and survival. Hamas stops at nothing, no matter how cruel or cynical toward its own people, in order to maintain its strength and hold the residents hostage to protect its status," Alian said. This is not the first time military personnel have published footage of Hamas torturing civilians in Gaza. In June, Alian published footage of Hamas executing people in the central square of Gaza City. "Cruelty, destruction, and suffering: that's all Hamas brings to both Gazans and Israelis," the Thursday COGAT post read. The following footage might be difficult for some viewers to watch. Viewer discretion is advised. Footage of Hamas terrorists beating Gazan civilians. (COGAT)
