Taxation Rules For Silver ETFs In India: What Investors Need To Know
Exchange-traded funds are investment products that track assets like gold or silver and are convenient options due to factors like their liquidity and low storage risk.
The 2024 Union Budget has introduced several taxation reforms for gold and silver investments. The government has simplified the taxation structure and slashed the Customs Duty from 15 per cent to 6 per cent to make these investments more affordable.
There are many ways to invest in these precious metals, including holding them physically. Many people prefer digital assets such as exchange-traded funds (ETFs) due to their liquidity and no storage-related risks.
Gold and silver ETFs are backed by physical holdings. To invest in these, people can trade them on brokerage platforms just like stocks. One can also opt for the ETF Fund of Funds (FoFs), which are like mutual funds and invest in underlying ETFs.
While more accessible, the new tax rules may make it difficult to understand how these investment tools are taxed. This is mainly because the new rules apply from a certain date and the investment holding period can impact the amount of tax one needs to pay.
For FY25, typically one may think that the revised rules apply to units redeemed between April 1, 2024 and March 31, 2025. However, due to 2024 being the Lok Sabha election year, the full budget was introduced only in July. Hence, the rules for the revised taxation norms came into effect on July 23, 2024.
Redeemed between July 23, 2024 and March 31
Redeemed after March 31
The holding period for silver ETF is 12 months, which means gains are treated as short or long-term based on this duration.
– If held for under 12 months (short-term capital gains): Taxed based on the investor's income tax slab rate
– If held for over 12 months (long-term capital gains): Taxed based on the investor's income tax slab rate
Case 2: Redeemed after March 31
– If held for under 12 months (short-term capital gains): Taxed based on the investor's income tax slab rate
– If held for over 12 months (long-term gains): 12.5 per cent
To be clear, the holding period for ETF FoFs is 24 months, which means that gains made from units held for less than two years in these funds are treated as short-term gains.
In addition, applicable tax based on the holding period, the capital gains may attract a 4% cess, along with a possible surcharge if your income exceeds specified thresholds under tax laws.

Russia starts direct commercial flights between Moscow, Pyongyang
Moscow, Jul 27 (AP) Russia on Sunday opened a regular air link between Moscow and Pyogyang, a move reflecting increasingly close ties between the two countries. The first flight operated by Russian carrier Nordwind took off from Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport carrying over 400 passengers. Russia's Transport Ministry said there will be one flight a month to meet demand. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who visited North Korea's new Wonsan-Kalma beach resort earlier this month to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, promised to encourage Russian tourists to visit the complex. The resort, which can accommodate nearly 20,000 people, is at the centre of Kim's push to boost tourism to improve his country's troubled economy. North Korea has been slowly easing the curbs imposed during the pandemic and reopening its borders in phases. But the country hasn't said if it would fully resume international tourism. Regular flights between Russia's eastern port city of Vladivostok and Pyongyang reopened in 2023 following a break caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Russia and North Korea have sharply expanded military and other ties in recent years, with Pyongyang supplying weapons and troops to back Russia's military action in Ukraine. IndiGo to add more intl destinations; to explore new MRO opportunities
New Delhi, Jul 27 (PTI) IndiGo will continue to add more overseas destinations with A321 XLRs set to join the fleet this fiscal year and aims to increase its international capacity share to 40 per cent by 2030. Also, the country's largest airline plans to explore new opportunities in the MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) space, according to its annual report for 2024-25. IndiGo, which has been flying for over 18 years, has a domestic market share of 64.5 per cent, operates around 2,200 flights daily with more than 430 planes. 'We will continue to add more destinations internationally, especially with XLRs coming in along with our newly leased wide body aircraft for long haul operations. From 28 per cent current international capacity share, we are aiming for 40 per cent by FY 2030," IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers said in his message in the annual report. Earlier this month, the carrier started flights to Manchester and Amsterdam that are being operated with Boeing 787 Dreamliners leased from Norway's Norse Atlantic. The long range A321 XLRs and wide-body A350-900s are expected to join the airline's fleet in the current fiscal year ending March 2026, and 2027, respectively. 'IndiGo also plans to explore new opportunities in the MRO space as India's infrastructure development is picking up," it said. The airline is setting up an MRO facility in Bengaluru. In the annual report, the airline said its outlook remains promising, supported by a healthy demand environment and firm capacity growth. 'While macroeconomic uncertainties and operating headwinds such as aircraft groundings and fuel cost volatility remain, IndiGo continues to proactively manage these challenges through fleet diversification, damp leasing strategies and strategic agreements with OEMs," it said. OEM refers to original equipment manufacturer. PTI RAM IAS TRB view comments First Published: July 27, 2025, 20:45 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
