A DETAILED inspection of the Sri Banting Dredge in Dengkil, Selangor, is being carried out to assess the condition of the floating platform.
Sepang Municipal Council (MPSepang) deputy president Muhamad Shah Osmin said this was to determine the extent of damage and outline necessary repairs.
'The consultant's findings will help the council better estimate the timeline for the project's completion,' he said.
The restoration of the dredge, built in 1974, is for the construction of the 29.14ha national tin mining heritage park.

The park is expected to be fully operational by 2028.
'We have received RM10mil from Selangor government and RM3mil from Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry to support the restoration,' he said during MPSepang's monthly full board meeting yesterday.
The 5,000-tonne structure, which was reportedly the largest dredge in the world, is part of Selangor's tin mining legacy.
The electric-powered structure measures 86m in length and between 22m and 29.3m in width. It is equipped with 110 buckets and was capable of digging to a 30m depth.
Muhamad Shah also said MPSepang had received the Honour Award for two research projects on the dredge done by its Town Planning Department.
The award was presented by the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia at the Malaysian Landscape Architecture Award 2025.
Separately, Muhamad Shah said Taman Kucing Cyberjaya, a council-run cat park, has treated 162 cats and rehomed 110 felines, since its inception in March 2023.
'There are currently 52 cats available for adoption,' he said.
'The council allocates RM80,000 annually to maintain the park which is managed by our Landscape Department.'
He said the local council received strong support from non-governmental organisations and private companies, with 47 corporate social responsibility initiatives held at the park so far.
'I encourage more people to adopt from the cat park.
'All the cats are vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and have received the necessary treatments,' he said.

Deputy Minister: Unity stands as true foundation of Sarawak's stability, progress

MIRI (July 8): Sarawak's remarkable transformation from a resources-based state to a leader in high technology, green energy and smart city development is only possible through strong unity of its people, said Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting. Speaking at the Miri Foochow annual dinner cum installation of its main committee, youth, women and senior citizen's wings on Sunday, Ting emphasised the collective spirit and close cooperation among the state's diverse communities including the Malay, Iban, Dayak, as well as various Chinese clan groups, as the true foundation of the state's stability and progress. Talking specifically about the Foochow community's well-known 'dare to fight, dare to win' spirit, he said this had 'contributed greatly to the journey'. 'We must continue to stand shoulder to shoulder, respecting and supporting each other, so that Sarawak can remain vibrant, harmonious and full of hope,' said the Piasau assemblyman, who is also a Foochow. He further described the community's resilience and entrepreneurship as being symbolised by the 'three knives: the scissors, the kitchen knives and the barber knives' – all representing the Foochow people's determination of building a better life from humble beginning. 'This is not a legendary tale, but a true reflection of the hard work and the fighting spirit of the Foochows, which have been passed down from one generation to the next.' Also present at the event was the association's chairman Wong Chie Bin. The dinner was made extra significant when the Foochow Porridge was served as one of the dishes. Known as 'Aojiu', the sweet porridge is a unique tradition of the community, served early on the 29th day of the first lunar month. Made as ancestral offerings or as gifts to relatives and friends, this dish's main ingredients comprise glutinous rice and brown sugar, with additional items such as peanuts, red dates, water chestnuts, sesame seeds and longan. Sabah always prioritises the environment: Liew

Published on: Friday, June 27, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jun 27, 2025 Text Size: Liew said environmental education is a dynamic process that builds awareness, knowledge and skills on environmental issues, ultimately driving behavioural and attitudinal changes that support conservation and sustainable management. Tuaran: Sabah has always prioritised the environment, recognising it as both an integral part and a strategic pillar of sustainable development, said State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew. In her speech, Liew emphasised the need for policies that incorporate environmental considerations and standards into all development activities to ensure both social and ecological sustainability. She said the ongoing implementation of the Action Plans under the Sabah State Policy on the Environment 2019, carried out by various government agencies, reflects the State's continued commitment to environmental stewardship. 'In 2017, the Sabah State Policy on the Environment was launched, serving as our guiding framework alongside the Environment Protection Enactment 2002,' she said at the World Environment Day 2025 celebration, here, Thursday. The text of her speech was delivered by the Ministry's Deputy Permanent Secretary, Mary Isidore Malangking. Liew said environmental education is a dynamic process that builds awareness, knowledge and skills on environmental issues, ultimately driving behavioural and attitudinal changes that support conservation and sustainable management. To address the complex challenges of environmental education in the State, Liew said the Sabah Environmental Education Policy was developed and officially launched in November 2009, as a vital platform to align stakeholder efforts in implementing comprehensive and effective environmental education initiatives. 'I am proud to say that Sabah is the first state in Malaysia to have an environmental education policy,' she said. Liew also highlighted several key milestones that have advanced environmental education in Sabah, including the launch of Sekolah Rakan Alam Sekitar (Serasi) in 2003 and the establishment of the Sabah Environmental Education Network in 2005. In a related development, she said the Environment Protection Department of Sabah recently conducted a study titled 'Development of Educational Materials and Best Practices Report on the Implementation of the Sabah Environmental Education Policy', which, among other outcomes, produced educational resources aimed at strengthening environmental education delivery. These resources include videos, learning modules, board games and a compilation of best practices tools designed to make environmental education more engaging, impactful and accessible to a wide range of target groups. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
