A Norwegian Cruise Line passenger was reported missing in Alaska.
Marties Buenafe, 62, texted family that she was going for a hike in Juneau on July 1, but did not return to the Norwegian Bliss ship for its scheduled 1:30 p.m. departure, the Alaska State Troopers said in a July 2 bulletin.
A Norwegian spokesperson said a guest was reported missing after they missed the vessel's all-aboard time.
'An active search is ongoing, and we are providing assistance to local authorities as appropriate,' they told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. 'Our CARE team is providing support to the guest's family and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.'
The ship eventually left the port and continued its week-long Alaska cruise sailing that departed from Seattle on June 28, according to CruiseMapper.
She told family by text message around 7:30 a.m. that she planned to hike to Gastineau Peak – a mountain in the area – via Gold Ridge, and was going up Mount Roberts Tramway, according to the state troopers.
'Security footage showed her at the top of Mount Roberts Tramway departing the buildings at about 0730 hours,' the bulletin said. 'Searches of the area have been unsuccessful in locating her.'
Authorities urged anyone with information or who has had contact with Buenafe to call 907-465-4000 with the reference number AK25063914.

The most walkable city in the U.S. has been chosen — and NYC bizarrely didn't come close to number one

The Big Apple — with its endless sidewalks, world-class parks and the country's most expansive public transportation system to tie it all together — is somehow not the most walkable city in the U.S. That is, anyway, according to the so-called travel experts behind a USA Today list of the most walkable cities in the U.S. to visit in 2025. 3 New York lags behind nine other much smaller cities on walkability, according to a nationwide panel of so-called travel experts. monkifoto – Not only was the city that never sleeps snubbed — with nearby Philadelphia muscling into the top spot — New York was shoved all the way down to number ten, behind a host of bizarre picks. While the publication acknowledged that 'several of [NYC's] landmarks are within easy walking distance from one another, and all five boroughs of the city are walkable,' our sheer size appears to have been behind the lackluster ranking. Aside from the bewildering anti-Gotham slant, the list had several other surprises in store. Puny Providence, for example, was awarded number two, Burlington, Vt. — with a downtown you could fit on a couple of Midtown blocks — took home number three. Brutally hilly San Francisco snagged number six. 10 most walkable cities in the U.S. to visit Philadelphia, PA Providence, RI Burlington, VT Columbus, OH Boston, MA San Francisco, CA Chicago, IL Savannah, GA Washington, D.C. New York City, NY Philadelphia is enjoying its third year in the top slot, apparently thanks to the tightly-gridded Center City, an area the publication said that both tourists and locals enjoy walking — writing that it boasts 'several gorgeous neighborhoods, including historic and charming Old City and Rittenhouse Square.' 3 Philadelphia was also praised in the list for its cultural attractions and pleasant scenery. Zenstratus – 3 Chicago, with its miles of lakefront trail, made the grade with critics. Erika – Density of points of interest seemed to work in the favor of the smaller cities — where top tourist attractions can typically be found within an easy stroll. The topic of walkability is a hot-button issue among many Americans — especially amid stubbornly steep gas prices and rising public transit fares, despite continued city congestion. On a Reddit discussion of this year's walkable cities list, residents of the City of Brotherly Love unpacked the win. 'Obviously, more people walk and ride transit in NYC, but as a former New Yorker, I do find walking in Philly a lot more pleasant,' wrote one shameless turncoat. 'The narrow and quieter streets are the norm here, while you have to really seek them out in New York— and in most other US cities they straight up don't exist.' 'That's one way to say that our public transit sucks,' quipped a cynic. 'Unlike NYC, though, many Philly neighborhoods lack essential businesses on the neighborhood level. This makes it difficult for the city to be truly walkable outside of Center City and a few other areas,' observed one astute Redditor. With that in mind, perhaps there's hope for bruised New York City egos after all.

Cruise Ship Passenger Is Missing After Going for a Hike in Alaska

A cruise ship passenger from Kentucky who went for a hike on Tuesday on a trail around Juneau, Alaska, remained missing on Thursday as rescue crews searched for her by land and air. Dogs, helicopters and search teams were continuing an exhaustive search effort for the passenger, Dr. Marites Buenafe, 62, the authorities said. She was identified by her employer as a physician at UK HealthCare in Lexington, Ky. Dr. Buenafe was reported missing at around 3:20 p.m. on Tuesday after she had failed to return to the cruise ship in time for its 1:30 p.m. departure, the Alaska Department of Public Safety said in a statement and in a missing persons bulletin. The morning she went missing Dr. Buenafe told her family in text messages that she was going to ride a tram into the mountains and that she then planned to hike the trail from the Gold Ridge to Gastineau Peak, the agency said. She was last spotted on security footage leaving the buildings at the top stop of the Mount Roberts Tramway at around 7:30 a.m., Alaska State Troopers said in the bulletin. Several agencies, including the Juneau Mountain Rescue, the Alaska State Troopers, the Alaska National Guard and the Juneau Police Department, have been involved in the effort to find Dr. Buenafe, according to the Alaska Department of Public Safety. 'We remain optimistic that we will find Marites alive,' Austin McDaniel, a spokesman for the public safety department, said on Thursday. The search effort has focused near downtown Juneau, 'in the mountains south of town,' which are not considered a remote area, Mr. McDaniel said. The trail is a popular hiking attraction, he added, and the public safety department conducts several search and rescues there every year. Alaska residents and visitors are encouraged to become familiar with the area and to pack well before going out on a trip, including by carrying extra clothing, food, water and a communications device, he said. People venturing into the backcountry are also advised to tell someone where they are going and when they can be expected to return. Mr. McDaniel cautioned that 'trips into Alaska's backcountry can go from expected easy day trips to very challenging with one wrong step or fall.'
