Why did the Ukrainian First Lady's plane land in Jaipur?
The unexpected landing of Ukraine's First Lady Olena Zelenska's plane in Jaipur on Sunday morning was for a refuelling, according to reports.
The refuelling request had been pre-approved by India's Ministry of External Affairs, which directed the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) to ensure all necessary protocols were followed. As per the directive issued on August 1, special instructions were given to exempt the delegation from standard pre-embarkation checks such as frisking and to extend VIP courtesies.
The plane landed at Jaipur International Airport at around 6:30 am, carrying a 23-member Ukrainian delegation, including high-ranking officials like Sergiy Kyslytsya, Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, and Oleksii Sobolev, Ukraine's Minister for Economic Affairs.

During the stop, the delegation waited in the VIP lounge while the aircraft was refuelled. The group was served light refreshments and met with Ukrainian Embassy officials from New Delhi who had travelled to Jaipur to receive them.
The visit was handled discreetly by airport authorities, despite the high-profile nature of the passengers. Immigration clearance was not required since it was a transit halt, and the plane resumed its journey to Tokyo at around 8:15 am.
According to NDTV, the delegation is headed to Japan to reinforce diplomatic ties and seek greater support in Ukraine's reconstruction efforts and sanctions push against Russia.
Who is Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska?
Olena Zelenska, born Olena Volodymyrivna Kiyashko, is the First Lady of Ukraine and the wife of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Before stepping into the spotlight, Olena had a career as a screenwriter, working with Kvartal 95 Studio, a comedy and production group co-founded by Zelenskyy long before he entered politics.

U.S. envoy Witkoff to visit Moscow ahead of sanctions deadline
U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff will meet on Wednesday (August 6, 2025) with the Russian leadership in Moscow as President Donald Trump's deadline to impose fresh sanctions over Russia's war in Ukraine looms. Mr. Trump has given Russia until Friday (August 8, 2025) to halt its offensive in Ukraine or face new penalties. The White House has not outlined specific actions it plans to take on Friday (August 8, 2025), but Mr. Trump has previously threatened to impose 'secondary tariffs' targeting Russia's remaining trade partners, such as China and India. The move would aim to stifle Russian exports but would risk significant international disruption. Mr. Trump said on Tuesday (August 5, 2025) that he would await the outcome of the Moscow talks before moving forward with any economic retaliation. 'We're going to see what happens,' he told reporters. 'We'll make that determination at that time.' An American source did not specify if the meetings will include Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom Mr. Witkoff has met with several times previously. Despite pressure from Washington, Russia has continued its onslaught against its pro-Western neighbour. Three rounds of peace talk in Istanbul have failed to make headway on a possible ceasefire, with the two sides appearing as far apart as ever. Moscow has demanded that Ukraine cede more territory and renounce Western support. Kyiv is calling for an immediate ceasefire, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy last week urged his allies to push for 'regime change' in Moscow. Nuclear rhetoric In recent weeks, Mr. Trump has increasingly voiced frustration with Mr. Putin over Moscow's unrelenting offensive. When reporters asked Mr. Trump on Monday (August 4, 2025) what Mr. Witkoff's message would be to Moscow, and if there was anything Russia could do to avoid the sanctions, Mr. Trump replied, 'Yeah, get a deal where people stop getting killed.' Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday (August 4, 2025) it considered the talks with Mr. Witkoff to be 'important, substantial and helpful' and valued U.S. efforts to end the conflict. Mr. Putin, who has consistently rejected calls for a ceasefire, said on Friday (August 1, 2025) that he wants peace but that his demands for ending his nearly three-and-a-half-year offensive were unchanged. Russia has frequently called on Ukraine to effectively cede control of four regions Moscow claims to have annexed, a demand Kyiv has called unacceptable. Mr. Putin also wants Ukraine to drop its ambitions to join NATO. The visit comes after Mr. Trump said that two nuclear submarines he deployed following an online row with former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev were now 'in the region.' Mr. Trump has not said whether he meant nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed submarines. He also did not elaborate on the exact deployment locations, which are kept secret by the U.S. military. Russia, in its first comments on the deployment, urged 'caution' on Monday (August 4, 2025). 'Russia is very attentive to the topic of nuclear non-proliferation. And we believe that everyone should be very, very cautious with nuclear rhetoric,' the Kremlin's Peskov said.

Zelenskyy Says He Had Productive Conversation With Trump On Ending War
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday said he had a "productive conversation" with US President Donald Trump, with the main focus on ending the war with Russia and coordinating positions between Kyiv and Washington. Zelenskyy said the two leaders discussed achieving a "just and lasting peace" and expressed appreciation for Trump's efforts to help end the conflict. "It is truly a must to stop the killing as soon as possible, and we fully support this. Many months could have already passed without war, had Russia not been prolonging it," Zelenskyy said in a statement shared on X. Zelenskyy added that both sides exchanged assessments of the battlefield, particularly the rising number of Russian strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. He said President Trump was "fully informed" about the current situation and Moscow's intensified assaults. The two leaders also discussed sanctions on Russia. Zelenskyy said Russia's economy continues to weaken under international pressure and that Trump's strong stance on sanctions "can change a lot". "That's exactly why Moscow is so sensitive to this prospect and President Trump's resolve," he added. Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine and the US discussed broader European support, particularly defence aid from NATO countries. He highlighted that over $1 billion in American-made weapons had already been pledged by the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. "This cooperation with NATO countries will continue," the Ukrainian President said. He also revealed that a new bilateral defence agreement between Ukraine and the US, focused on drones, had been drafted. "The draft agreement on drones has already been prepared by the Ukrainian side. We are ready to discuss it in detail and conclude it. One of the strongest agreements this could be," Zelenskyy stated. Zelenskyy ended his message by thanking the people of the United States for supporting Ukraine's defence. "Thank you to every American heart that supports our defense of life. Thank you, President Trump!" he said. In a separate update, President Zelenskyy said that mercenaries from countries like China, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and several African nations are fighting alongside Russian troops in the ongoing war. The claim was made during his visit to front-line soldiers of the 17th Separate Motorised Infantry Battalion of the 57th Brigade in the Kharkiv region on Monday. "Our warriors in this sector are reporting the participation of mercenaries from China, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, and African countries in the war. We will respond," he posted on X. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has once again targeted India over its oil imports from Russia. In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump said the US would "substantially raise" the tariffs India pays for buying what he described as "massive amounts of Russian oil." "India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits. They don't care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine. Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA. Thank you for your attention to this matter!!!" Trump wrote. The post comes shortly after Trump announced a 25% reciprocal tariff on Indian goods and signalled additional penalties over energy trade with Moscow.
