Son poised to join LAFC for £20m after Spurs exit

Son Heung-min is expected to join Los Angeles FC for around £20m after announcing his departure from Tottenham over the weekend. The forward revealed in a news conference on Saturday that he will leave Tottenham this summer after 10 years at the club. And the 33-year-old appears poised to join Major League Soccer (MLS) in what could even be a record fee, potentially surpassing the £22.5m paid by Atlanta United to sign Emmanuel Latte Lath from Middlesbrough in February. The final details of the transfer remain in discussion but his move to LAFC is now considered subject just to the completion of paperwork and a medical. Son, who is under contract with Spurs until 2026, made what is expected to be his final appearance for Tottenham in a 1-1 pre-season friendly against Newcastle in Seoul on Sunday. He was embraced by his Spurs team-mates and the opposing Newcastle players, and they performed a guard of honour when he was substituted in the 65th minute. While Tottenham's pre-season preparations now take them to Germany to face Bayern Munich on Thursday - and a reunion with Harry Kane -Son is expected to enjoy some time in his native South Korea. Arriving from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, Son scored 173 goals in 454 appearances for Tottenham. He was captain when Tottenham beat Manchester United in the Europa League final in May to clinch their first trophy in 17 years. Son makes emotional Spurs farewell - how much will they miss him? Inter Miami provide update on Lionel Messi after suffering hamstring injury against Necaxa

Lionel Messi picked up a hamstring injury during Inter Miami's Leagues Cup penalty shootout win over Club Necaxa. The MLS club has provided an update, saying Messi underwent medical tests to evaluate the extent of the injury. The results confirmed a minor muscle injury in the forward's right leg. The club did not provide a timeline for the 38-year-old's return, but he is expected to miss Miami's next Leagues Cup match against UNAM Pumas on Wednesday. Messi fell to the ground after coming into contact with Necaxa's Raul Sanchez and Alexis Pena early in the game. The Argentine sought medical attention but was forced to leave after 11 minutes, with Federico Redondo subbed on as his replacement. Messi's injury will likely be a big blow for Miami, who are aiming to reach the second round of the Leagues Cup with a positive result against Pumas. The former Barcelona star has been a key player for the Herons this season, scoring 24 goals and providing 10 assists in 31 appearances across all competitions. Miami relied heavily on Messi at the recent FIFA Club World Cup, where he played over 90 minutes in all four matches of the competition. The World Cup winner led his team to Leagues Cup success in 2023, scoring in normal time and converting his penalty in the final against Nashville SC. Stats from Transfermarkt

Hit Show Takes West Virginia Governor's Stakes In Mountaineer Thriller

Hit Show Takes West Virginia Governor's Stakes In Mountaineer Thriller originally appeared on Paulick Report. Hit Show, who earned $6.9 million earlier this year for winning the Dubai World Cup (G1), successfully defended his title in the Sunday's $200,000 West Virginia Governor's Stakes, but it wasn't easy. Though the 5-year-old Candy Ride horse was the morning-line favorite in the field of seven, Not This Boy, fresh off an allowance victory at Churchill Downs, dropped to 3-5 as the pool closed versus 7-5 for Hit Show. The pair hooked up on the far turn of the 1 1/16-mile race and battled through the Mountaineer stretch, with Hit Show winning by a head in 1:43.63. Brad Cox, trainer of Hit Show, won his fifth West Virginia Governor's Stakes. Wathnon Racing's Hit Show, who rated in fourth until making his move heading into the far turn, was ridden by Florent Geroux, who was aboard last year at Mountaineer and for the Dubai World Cup. 'He's a tricky horse to ride, which makes it harder,' Geroux said, noting timing the horse's move is important. 'He's doesn't draw away from horses, but I still thought I had (Not This Boy) measured.' Zimmer Ridge Ranch's Not This Boy, ridden by Luis Saez for trainer Doug Cowans, broke on top from post one and set a measured pace while unchallenged. When the 4-year-old Not This Time gelding was hooked by Hit Show, he dug in and fought to the wire. Cowans said being on the inside of the duel may have hurt Not This Boy's chances, but when asked what he thought of the performance, he said: "He's good.' Jokestar finished third, 7½ lengths behind Not This Boy. Hit Show, now 10-for-20 and a winner of six graded stakes, is the only horse to have won the Governor's Stakes in back-to-back years. M B Sea won the race in 2005 and 2007. Total wagering for the nine-race program at Mountaineer was $2.49 million, up 36% from last year and the second-highest figure since 2015. This story was originally reported by Paulick Report on Aug 4, 2025, where it first appeared.
