‘Superman' Movies Ranked Worst To Best By Rotten Tomatoes Critics
James Gunn's Superman, starring David Corenswet in the title role, is new in theaters this week, and soon fans will find out how the writer-director's version rates against the Superman movies that came before it.
Superman, which is written and directed by Gunn, plays in Thursday previews before opening Friday in theaters nationwide. The official summary for Superman partially reads, 'When Superman (Corenswet) is drawn into conflicts both abroad and at home, his actions to protect humankind are questioned, and his vulnerability allows tech billionaire and master deceiver Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) to leverage the opportunity to get Superman out of the way for good.

'Superman IV: The Quest For Peace' (1987)
The fourth and final film starring Christopher Reeve as Superman/Clark Kent was blasted by Rotten Tomatoes critics, who collectively gave the film a 14% 'rotten' rating based on 114 viewers. Audiences, meanwhile, gave the film a 16% 'rotten' score on RT's Popcornmeter based on 50,000-plus verified user ratings.
The RT Consensus for Superman IV: Quest for Peace reads, 'The Superman series bottoms with The Quest for Peace -- the action is boring, the special effects look cheaper, and none of the actors appear interested in where the plot's going.'
'Superman III' (1983)
Neither comedy legend Richard Pryor nor The Man From U.N.C.L.E. star Robert Vaughn could help Christopher Reeve give lift to the third Superhero chapter, which Rotten Tomatoes critics gave a 29% 'rotten' rating based on 79 reviews.
Audiences found even less to be enthused about with Superman III, as the movie earned a 23% 'rotten' Popcornmeter score based on 100,000-plus user ratings.

'Man Of Steel' (2013)
Starring Henry Cavill as Superman/Clark Kent and Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Man of Steel marked the second reboot attempt of the Superman franchise by Warner Bros.
Grounded in real-world sensibilities like Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight movies, Nolan and David S. Goyer wrote the screen story while Goyer wrote the screenplay for Man of Steel with Zack Snyder in the director's chair.
While Rotten Tomatoes critics gave Man of Steel a 57% 'rotten' rating based on 327 reviews, audiences embraced the film with a 75% 'fresh' rating on RT's Popcornmeter based on 250,000 user ratings.

'Superman Returns' (2006)
Brandon Routh made his first and only appearance as Superman/Clark Kent opposite Kate Bosworth's Lois Lane and Kevin Spacey's Lex Luthor in director Bryan Singer's Superman Returns, the first reboot of the Superman film franchise by Warner Bros.
Superman Returns earned a 73% 'fresh' rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics based on 275 reviews, while audiences gave the film a less-enthusiastic 60% 'fresh' score on RT's Popcornmeter based on 250,000-plus user ratings.

Superman II received an 88% 'fresh' review from Rotten Tomatoes critics, while audiences gave it a 76% 'fresh' Popcornmeter score based on 100,000-plus user ratings.

'Superman: The Movie' (1978)
Christopher Reeve took up the mantle of playing Superman/Clark Kent following George Reeves' turn as the iconic character on TV for Superman: The Movie. Directed by Richard Donner, Supeman: The Movie also starred Margot Kidder as Lois Lane and Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor, and featured The Godfather legend Marlon Brando in the small but pivotal role of Jor-El, the father of Superman, who was born Kal-El.
Superman: The Movie was largely a hit with Rotten Tomatoes critics, who collectively gave the film a 90% 'fresh' rating based on 84 reviews. Audiences also were high on Superman: The Movie, giving it an 86% 'fresh' Popcornmeter score based on 250,000-plus user ratings.

David Corenswet recalls James Gunn telling him to 'shut the f--- up' for asking too many questions on 'Superman' set
Just because James Gunn is the man who directed the Man of Steel, doesn't mean he has nerves of steel — a fact that David Corenswet's inquisitive nature tested a few times on set. In an interview for GQ's latest cover story, Corenswet recalled how he and Gunn worked together to perfect their vision for the latest iteration of Clark Kent. The Superman lead shared how the filmmaker and new DC Studios co-head differs from most directors because he'll "sit back by the monitors on the God mic and he'll yell directions at you, which is not how directors generally work." While some might be taken aback by that approach, Corenswet appreciated that Gunn was willing to say what he wanted out loud "without too much politeness and without beating around the bush." "If I'm no good, tell me I'm no good, and then let's work together to make me good," he added. Case in point: Although Gunn complimented Corenswet's eagerness to "help make the film as good as possible," he also admitted that the actor's eye for filmmaking started to wear on his nerves after a while. "He said, 'I think you're also like a kid sticking his finger in light sockets and sometimes I gotta slap you on the wrist and say stop f---ing doing that,'" Corenswet recalled good-naturedly. Gunn expanded on the sentiment to the publication himself, remembering that the Politician actor often asked questions that "make him better, and because they make him better, they make the movie better." "But every once in a while, it's just one question too many, and it's like, 'Oh, my God, just, David, stop, stop, for a minute,'" Gunn continued, adding that the "beautiful thing" about his working relationship with Corenswet is how he understands the director's limits. The director elaborated, "When I say, 'David, shut the f--- up,' David totally gets it and does not take that personally. And we have a really, to me, beautiful relationship in that way because I'm used to being very sensitive with actors, and you have to be by default, because many actors are incredibly sensitive because they're putting their emotions on the line onscreen. But with David, he's not that way. He's not sensitive like that." Superman, in theaters Friday, marks the official theatrical launch of Gunn and Peter Safran's rebooted DC Universe (DCU). Set three years into Clark Kent's tenure as the Man of Steel, the story follows the superhero's fight to balance his Kryptonian heritage with his upbringing in Smallville, Kan.; meanwhile, he's pulled into a personal battle with Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), who, as Gunn told Entertainment Weekly, is driven by an obsessive need to outshine the superhero. "I was very excited when James said all of that is true about Superman, but we get to meet him in this moment where those things are least true. That's where he's a little bit of Superman, he's a little bit of Clark — because the only other person in the room knows who he is and holds all the cards."He added, "It's harder in some ways to play Superman and then to do a great play or a dramatic film, because as an actor, you feel like the seriousness of the work somehow supports you. It allows the whole thing to feel more grounded. There is a unique challenge to playing a guy who wears his underwear on the outside and can fly. I think I had the great fortune of getting a little bit of both. 'Superman' review: James Gunn brings the fun back to superheroes with the DC Universe
It's important to stress what a huge lift it is to make a Superman film. He's a beloved character that has inspired people for decades, and been a beacon of hope for many. So it takes a strong vision to really create something that will satisfy audiences. But with the new film Superman, James Gunn did something critically important: He brought fun to the table in a big way. While it's something you may have expected from his work on Guardians of the Galaxy, Superman, Lois Lane, Lex Luthor and even the adorable pup Krypto inject refreshing new life into the legacy Superman films. Once Superman is healed by sunlight, with the help of droids, he's played a message from his parents. But damage to the hologram means he only gets part of his parents' message from his destroyed home planet. In Metropolis, Superman is facing some heat for inserting himself into an international conflict as Boravia invades neighbouring Jarhanpur, but he maintains he's doing so for the betterment of humankind. But all this conflict is linked to Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) and his LuthorCorp, with larger and more sinister plans in sight. It's understandable to go into Superman cautiously optimistic. We've all felt the Marvel Cinematic Universe-led superhero fatigue. For any superhero film, it's really a fantasy world, and previous films with similar characters in the same genre might have taken themselves too seriously. Gunn wants to take you on a fun ride and opens you up to silly laughs, with the film even poking fun at itself, particularly the parts of the Superman story that could never be possible in real life. While Gunn has clearly worked to lean into the humanity of the title character, and an example of someone who is pure in his intentions to do good, it's evident, but doesn't hit as hard as the comedy. Which is completely fine in my book, but will depend on your expectations for this film. David Corenswet is a spectacular Superman, it's like he was made to play the role. He has the charisma you expect from this iconic superhero, but his approach feels fresh, while that's largely due to Gunn's approach to the character. For Lois Lane, I appreciate that Rachel Brosnahan's version of the character feels like she has more agency in her career and her relationship. We see her disagree with Clark about their work as journalists and international conflict, for example. Could we have had more time to dive into her story? Yes, and I would have loved that, but I also understand that the movie is called Superman. Edi Gathegi's Mr. Terrific is a scene stealer in the film. It's a great character that is really essential in moving the main conflict and narrative points forward. But that's not the case for all the supporting characters. Isabela Merced's Hawkgirl, for example, could have benefitted from more screen time as she feels particularly under-utilized. While Nathan Fillion really comes in just for punchy comedy moments, they actually really work in their limited quantities. My biggest complaint in movies that live in this genre is that they feel like they prioritize visual spectacle over story. While there are certainly moments that have been crafted for that visual "wow," and times where it feels overstuffed, Gunn succeeds in really being relentless in his pacing to get keep your focus. While that's bound to be too much for many, I'm someone who's just happy I was never completely bored. It can feel like a scattered story, but that's where you have to commit to the silliness and goofiness that Gunn is leaning into for much of the film. If nothing else, it's worth the ticket price to see the dog Krypto. He'll instantly put a smile on your face.
