Long-serving MSP Sarah Boyack prepares to stand down
Ms Boyack said it has been 'the honour of my life' to serve as an MSP, but will not stand again in 2026.
She was elected in the first Scottish Parliament election in 1999 and was MSP for Edinburgh Central until 2011.
Ms Boyack was MSP for the Lothian region from 2011 to 2016 and then left parliament after failing to be re-elected, but returned in 2019.
The MSP, who was transport minister in Donald Dewar's first cabinet, announced her intentions in the Edinburgh Evening News on Monday.
She said: 'It has been the honour of my life to serve as an MSP in the Scottish Parliament.
'I am proud of what I have achieved, both in my time in government and in my local campaigns for issues that matter to my constituents.
'It is great to see progress being made on issues such as a new Eye Pavilion for Edinburgh, funding for the King's Theatre and the Filmhouse, but not least on my Member's Bill to ensure a more sustainable future for all of Scotland.
'I will also continue to support causes close to my heart from Edinburgh's housing crisis to the battle to ensure we remain one of the cultural capitals of the world.
'Although I am not standing again, I will work tirelessly in the election to achieve a Scottish Labour victory in 2026.
'I have loved my time representing this amazing community and I hope to see Anas Sarwar as First Minister champion these causes and more to achieve a more prosperous, sustainable and just Scotland.'

Ministers have refused to tell Parliament what evidence they have found about human radiation experiments on troops. The Nuked Blood Scandal threatens to land the MoD with a potential £5bn lawsuit Ministers have uncovered government plans to conduct radiation experiments on troops, but refused to give details to Parliament. It comes days after the Defence Secretary told MPs he was 'deeply uncomfortable' about a super-injunction that prevented him discussing a £7bn data leak about Afghan troops and translators. Now the Mirror can reveal that his department is again hiding potentially expensive errors behind the cloak of a 'ministerial review' - with final costs estimated at a further £5bn. Tory grandee Sir John Hayes said: "Given that the ministers will have discovered a great deal in this review, it's important they inform Parliament of it at the earliest opportunity to maintain good faith, and I will be raising this in the House as a matter of urgency." The inquiry was ordered last year after a BBC documentary showcased our investigation of the Nuked Blood Scandal, a Cold War programme of mass blood and urine testing on servicemen conducted in Australia and the Pacific for more than a decade. The results are missing from medical files, effectively denying them war pensions, compensation, and the right medical treatment. MoD officials have repeatedly told Parliament and the courts that blood testing never took place. Veterans Minister Al Carns has been asked several times by MPs of all parties to reveal his findings from the 10-month review of Ministry of Defence archives, but has rejected the calls, saying he is hunting for evidence of an official policy of blood-testing. 'I will update the house when I am in a position to share the findings of the exercise that is looking at concerns raised with me about some nuclear test veterans' medical records,' he told the Commons. His staff have examined 43,000 files, amounting to more than a million pages. They include a 1957 request from Charles Adams, the scientific director of the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment that blood counts should be done on troops even if others 'thought it unnecessary'. A second AWRE letter examined by his team says blood tests are needed 'from the medico-legal aspect' for all troops and civilians before they leave the UK because 'we wish to exclude people with existing pathological conditions... we wish to be able to demonstrate that this has been done in any case in which a claim for damage is made'. The review is also thought to have uncovered a 1958 operational order from Bomber Command stating that 'all personnel who go to Christmas Island should have the following blood examinations made and the results recorded in [their file]'. The MoD is facing a lawsuit from veterans and widows about non-production of the medical records, estimated to top £5bn. Alan Owen of campaign group LABRATS said: 'The data leak which has caused so much outrage was blamed on the previous government, but this happened entirely on Labour 's watch. 'They set up the review, they've been briefed on the findings, and they've refused repeated requests from Parliament to reveal what they know. They don't even have the excuse of a super-injunction to hide behind - this is the government's own doing.' A spokesman for the MoD said: 'The Minister for Veterans and People has commissioned officials to look seriously into unresolved questions regarding medical records as a priority, and this is now underway. "This work will be comprehensive, and it will enable us to better understand what information the department holds in relation to the medical testing of service personnel who took part in the UK nuclear weapons tests, ensuring that we can be assured that relevant information has been looked at thoroughly.' The spokesman was unable to confirm whether the minister had personally reviewed the files seen by his team.

A credible plan that adds up and includes answers to the currency question and real figures for an independent Scottish budget. Is that too much to ask? Scotland free by 2033, perhaps. Council Tax will be unaffordable for many households while radical and practical solutions like Annual Ground Rent will continue to be ignored. Jobs in vital industries will continue to be lost and the wind turbines which increasingly dominate our landscapes will continue to export their electricity to our southern neighbours. I firstly had to wonder if John penned this article himself, or was it the product of AI and the efforts of one of the Scottish Government's small army of special advisers, then simply approved by John? It is clear that the renewed strategy is cauld political porridge reheated and served up to try and fill the empty bellies of Scotland's independence supporters who are desperately hungry, virtually starving in fact, for new initiatives with hopefully a wee sprinkling of inspiration. I had to wait until I reached the very bottom scrapings of John's porridge bowl to find his scarce-in-detail three-part plan. The final 329 words to be exact. There are more words in this letter! READ MORE: John Swinney's plan can't be the final word on independence John claims that 'first, it will be a campaign designed to build the highest levels of support possible for independence as the best future for Scotland'. This is welcome but it's nothing new. The SNP have been trying to do it for almost 100 years. The real problem for John is that SNP support is now firmly anchored well below support for independence. Some might even argue it is dragging it down. Second in John's plan is 'building public pressure around Scotland's fundamental national rights. We are ready to turn the heat up on Westminster and its anti-democratic stance, mobilising the support, energy and the impetus of people in Scotland behind the simple idea: no ifs, no buts, Scotland has the right to choose'. This is fighting talk, just talk, but with the loss of almost all of the SNP's MPs just over a year ago, Westminster is not going to listen, John. The Scottish public need to hear what is the SNP's practical road map to independence – if they even have one. The third point: 'The way to deliver independence is only with an emphatic SNP win' is simply longhand for "vote SNP on both ballot papers so that the SNP can try to manage devolution for yet another five years." We don't need to imagine anything he is asking for. It might be in his imagination, but not ours. Just what does he think we have been doing since 2014? We, the people of Scotland, know what we want. So it's time he got out of his SNP bubble and talked to us through a national public convention. This is the diplomatic way forward, just to remind him. Not a dictatorial set of notions of his own making. And yes, I am still an SNP member. I think fundamentally he's a good guy with an almost impossible job to do. There's no doubt he's improved the SNP position since he took over. He's a good manager, but as a radical independence motivating force ... err no, that's not going to happen! I know it's been tried before (with the wrong people in my view ) but I believe John should appoint Stephen Flynn as indy minister. He already has a known media profile, he seems to have a bit of fire in him and is a bit of a disruptor. I don't know if that's a realistic possibility, but we desperately need someone from the [[SNP]] to be 100% dedicated to promoting the benefits of indy and the depressing reality of the union.
