Doc Edge Announces New Chair And Board Member
As Doc Edge celebrates its 20th year, these leadership changes mark an exciting new chapter, with the Doc Edge Festival 2025 programme launching on 9 May, featuring 90 films and immersive projects.
Doc Edge is delighted to announce the appointment of Matthew Metcalfe ONZM as the new Chair of the Doc Edge Board. Matthew joined the board in August 2024, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a deep passion for documentary and the screen industry.
One of New Zealand's leading screen producers, Matthew has a distinguished career supporting powerful, globally resonant storytelling. His portfolio spans both documentary and drama, and he has long been a champion of factual storytelling's role in shaping culture and sparking dialogue.
'I am deeply honoured to take on the role of Chair' says Matthew. 'Doc Edge is an essential platform for bold, authentic voices from New Zealand and beyond. As the organisation celebrates its 20th anniversary, I look forward to helping shape its future and supporting its growth as the Asia Pacific centre for documentary.'
Matthew steps into the role following the departure of Glenn Johnstone, who has served as Chair over the past several years.
'It has been a privilege to serve on the board and contribute to the important work of Doc Edge,' says Glenn.
Doc Edge Co-Directors Dan Shanan and Alex Lee say: 'It has been a privilege to work alongside Glenn, and we are incredibly proud of what we have achieved together, especially during the past few challenging years. Glenn's dedication to Doc Edge has been invaluable, and we are deeply grateful for his leadership and commitment.'
Doc Edge is also pleased to welcome Sarah Stuart to the board. Sarah is a strategic communications expert, and former editorial leader with senior experience across media, politics, and corporate leadership. Her past roles include leading communications at KiwiRail and Fletcher Construction, as well as Director of Communications for the Opposition Leader. She recently established a new commercial integration unit at Stuff Group.
Storytelling has been at the centre of Sarah's career for decades and she says joining Doc Edge at a time of major growth and opportunity is a privilege.
'In our chaotic world, documentary storytelling brings connection, emotional resonance and insights that enlighten and uplift us,' she says. 'Doc Edge is a world class festival that every Kiwi should have the opportunity to experience. I am so excited to help it on its next stage of growth.'

Fruit synonymous with Central Otago will feature on this weekend's episode of top chef Ben Bayly's A New Zealand Food Story . Bayly, who runs Aosta and Little Aosta in Arrowtown, the historic Bathhouse in Queenstown, award-winning Ahi and Origine in Auckland and The Grounds in the Waitākere Ranges, is in his fourth series of New Zealand Food Story which follows him around the country seeking out some of the best food producers in the country. "I believe our Kiwi produce is world class," Bayly says. "But the faceless piece of steak or fruit in the supermarket — how was it raised or grown? We need to connect with the growers, the producers, the harvesters and shine a light on their care and commitment." In this weekend's episode he seeks out apricots and cherries in Central Otago visiting Cromwell's Jackson Orchards and Forest Lodge Orchard (Electric Cherries), near Mt Pisa. He meets owner Kevin Jackson, a fourth-generation orchardist, his daughter Kristin Nolan and grandson Jackson Nolan. Bayly travels around the orchard in its tour bus sampling fruit such as peaches, apricots and nectarines along the way, declaring he has tasted the "best ever" apricot. Then he visits Forest Lodge, a 6ha cherry production business, with 1650 trees per hectare planted using an upright fruiting offshoot-trained system. Owners, Mike and Rebecca Casey and Euan and Rachel White, aim to develop a premium cherry orchard and be sustainable so they have an electric tractor, an electrified irrigation pump, and New Zealand's first electric frost–fighting fans. They are also developing an electric foliage sprayer. In 2022, they set themselves a challenge of going completely fossil-fuel-free, hoping this will potentially save about $50,000 per year in energy bills. Bayly takes inspiration from the producers he visits by cooking using ingredients he has found on his journeys. The knowledge picked up also helps him in his own garden, Ahi Organic Gardens in South Auckland, which grows seasonal produce for his Auckland restaurants. Lorde announces two New Zealand shows
Lorde has confirmed she will play two shows in New Zealand next year as part of her Ultrasound world tour. Having just released her fourth studio album Virgin, the superstar has now confirmed she will play in Auckland and Christchurch in February next year, followed by four Australian dates. She will perform at Auckland's Spark Arena on February 11, followed by Christchurch's Wolfbrook Arena on February 13. Tickets go on sale next week via Frontier Touring. Virgin has reached number one in the UK, Australia and New Zealand, and reached number two in the charts in the US.
