UK bans single-use vapes to stem use by children and reduce harmful litter
The ban makes it illegal for any retailer - online or in-store - to sell vapes, whether they contain nicotine or not.
They will still be able to sell reusable vapes. The crackdown follows the soaring use of disposable vapes in schools and a rising tide of trash as users dispose of the vapes.
It is estimated that as many as 5 million disposable vapes are thrown in bins or littered every week across the U.K., rather than being recycled.
A number of countries are seeking to regulate the vape market, which has grown exponentially over the past decade or so.
Australia outlawed the sale of vapes outside pharmacies last year in some of the world's toughest restrictions on electronic cigarettes, while Belgium became the first European Country to ban the use of disposable vapes at the start of this year.
California has been at the forefront of bringing in new regulations in the U.S.
The U.K.'s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said usage among young people remained too high, and the ban would "put an end to their alarming rise in school playgrounds and the avalanche of rubbish flooding the nation's streets.'
Also known as single-use vapes, disposable vapes are non-refillable and unable to be recharged, and are typically thrown away with general waste or just thrown on the street.
Even when they are recycled, they need to be taken apart by hand, while their batteries are a fire risk to recycling facilities and can leak harmful chemicals into the environment and potentially harming wildlife.
Businesses were given six months to prepare for the change by selling any existing stock. Rogue traders who continue to sell them risk a fine of 200 ($260) in the first instance, followed by an unlimited fine or jail time for repeat offending.
The U.K. Vaping Industry Association said its members had moved quickly to comply with the June 1 deadline, but warned of "serious unintended consequences' emanating from too much regulation.
"We are concerned that this ban will encourage former smokers who have already transitioned from cigarettes, which kill 220 people every day in the U.K, to return to combustible tobacco or opt for unregulated vapes," said its director general, John Dunne.
Separately, the British government is legislating to potentially restrict the packaging, marketing and flavors of e-cigarettes.

Rolls-Royce shares surge as engine maker lifts outlook
LONDON: Shares in Rolls-Royce surged by more than nine percent in London trading Thursday after the British maker of aircraft engines raised its full-year outlook on strong demand. The company reported a fourfold increase in first-half net profit to £4.4 billion ($5.8 billion), which compared with £1.1 billion in the first six months of 2024. The sharp rise was attributed to rising sales and a significant accounting gain linked to weakening of the dollar. Revenue increased seven percent to £9.5 billion in the reporting period. Rolls-Royce, which supplies engines to the world's biggest aircraft manufacturers Airbus and Boeing, has undergone a major turnaround since chief executive Tufan Erginbilgic took the helm in 2023. 'Our actions led to strong first half year results, despite the challenges of the supply chain and tariffs,' Erginbilgic said in the earnings statement. Rolls-Royce benefits from a trade agreement between the UK and US struck in May, which removes tariffs on Britain's aerospace sector. The agreement places a 10-percent tariff on the import of British goods to the US, and lowers sector-specific levies including on automakers. Rolls on Thursday said it expects to 'fully offset the impact of the announced tariffs through... mitigating actions' by the group. It expects to deliver underlying operating profit of up to £3.2 billion for the year, compared with its previous forecast of between £2.7 billion and £2.9 billion. The group announced a dividend for the first half of the year, after reinstating shareholder payments last year. 'Rolls-Royce continues to soar above expectations, delivering yet another set of high-flying results and profit guidance upgrades,' said Aarin Chiekrie, equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown. 'Revenues are being boosted by the upward trend in engine-flying hours, which are now cruising well above pre-pandemic levels,' he added. Around 0900 GMT, shares in Rolls-Royce were up 9.2 percent at £10.79 on London's rising FTSE 100 index. The UK government recently made Rolls its preferred bidder to build small modular nuclear reactors. Trump has threatened both sanctions on Russia and buyers of its exports unless progress is made. The fresh deadline suggests the US president is prepared to move forward on those threats after previous hesitation to do so. Speaking in Scotland, where he is holding meetings with European leaders and playing golf, Trump said he was disappointed in Putin and shortening a 50-day deadline he had set on the issue earlier this month. 'I'm going to make a new deadline of about ... 10 or 12 days from today,' Trump told reporters during a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. 'There's no reason in waiting... We just don't see any progress being made.' There was no immediate comment from the Kremlin. Ukraine welcomed the statement. Andriy Yermak, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's chief of staff, thanked Trump in a social media post for 'standing firm and delivering a clear message of peace through strength.' Pakistan and US reach a trade deal to develop oil reserves and reduce tariffs
ISLAMABAD, July 31, (AP):The United States and Pakistan reached a trade agreement expected to allow Washington to help develop Pakistan's largely untapped oil reserves and lower tariffs for the South Asian country, officials from both nations said Thursday. Officials did not specify where the exploration would take place, but most of Pakistan's reserves are believed to be in the insurgency-hit southwestern province of Balochistan, where separatists say the province's natural resources are being exploited by the central government in Islamabad. "We have just concluded a deal with the country of Pakistan, whereby Pakistan and the United States will work together on developing their massive oil reserves,' U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. "We are in the process of choosing the oil company that will lead this partnership,' Trump added. "Who knows, maybe they'll be selling oil to India someday!' Total U.S. trade with Pakistan was an estimated $7.3 billion in 2024, according to the Office of the United States Representative, which said on its website that U.S. exports to Pakistan in 2024 were $2.1 billion, up 4.4% ($90.9 million) from 2023. U.S. imports from Pakistan totaled $5.1 billion in 2024, up 4.9% ($238.7 million) from 2023, it said. There was no immediate comment from the Baloch nationalists and separatist groups. Balochistan has long been the center of violence mostly blamed on groups including the outlawed Balochistan Liberation Army, or BLA, which the U.S. designated a terrorist organization in 2019. Separatists in Balochistan have opposed the extraction of resources by Pakistani and foreign firms and have targeted Pakistani security forces and Chinese nationals working on multibillion-dollar projects related to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. Oil reserves are also thought to exist in the southern Sindh, eastern Punjab and northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces. Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the "long-awaited' deal and thanked Trump for playing a key role in finalizing it. Pakistan had been pursuing a trade agreement since May, when Trump mediated a ceasefire between Pakistan and India following an escalation triggered by Indian airstrikes on Pakistani territory in response to the killing of 26 tourists in Indian-controlled Kashmir. Pakistan's Finance Ministry said in a statement early Thursday the agreement aims to boost bilateral trade, expand market access, attract investment and foster cooperation in areas of mutual interest. The breakthrough came during a meeting in Washington between Pakistani Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and senior U.S. officials, including Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer. The deal includes a reduction in reciprocal tariffs, particularly on Pakistani exports to the U.S., the statement from the ministry said. "The agreement enhances Pakistan's access to the U.S. market and vice versa,' it said. The agreement is also expected to spur increased U.S. investment in Pakistan's infrastructure and development projects, it added.
