Australian shares inch lower as financial stocks weigh

Australian shares inched lower on Thursday, dragged by heavyweight financial stocks, although gains in mining and energy stocks boosted by higher commodity prices limited losses. The S&P/ASX 200 index fell 0.1% to 8,585.40, as of 0031 GMT, after rising as much as 0.3% earlier in the session. The ASX 200 index had closed at a record high on Wednesday. The benchmark could not sustain the momentum on Thursday as heavyweight financial stocks declined 1.2%. Top banks Commonwealth Bank of Australia and National Australia Bank declined more than 1% each. Banks have turbo charged much of the gains in the benchmark index this year, as global uncertainties drove safe-haven flows, while hopes of interest rate cuts from the central bank, boding well for the economy, also aided sentiment. Investors are now awaiting the Reserve Bank of Australia's monetary policy decision next week, where markets are almost certain that the central bank will deliver a rate cut, as economic growth has stayed weak and inflation risks have faded. Rate-sensitive real estate stocks declined 0.4% after two sessions of stellar gains. Mining stocks helped cap losses in the benchmark index, rising 2.5% to hit a two-week high, after iron ore futures prices firmed. Meanwhile, a rise in copper prices also lifted sentiment. The sub-index also got a boost from positive data from China, Australia's top trading partner and major consumer of iron ore, earlier this week. Sector majors BHP Group and Rio Tinto rose 4.3% and 2.5%, respectively. Energy stocks rose 0.9% helped by surge in oil prices after Iran suspends cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog. Pro Medicus hit a record high and was among the top gainers in the benchmark after the medical imaging platforms maker secured major contracts. Meanwhile, New Zealand's benchmark S&P/NZX 50 index fell 0.4% to 12,722.20.

TSX flat; investors focus on economic data, trade talks

Canada's main stock index was flat in choppy trading on Wednesday as investors assessed weak domestic and U.S. economic data, while tracking signs of any progress on trade talks ahead of President Donald Trump's July 9 tariff deadline. The S&P/TSX composite index was flat at 26877.26 points, after markets resumed trading following the Canada Day holiday. Data showed Canada's manufacturing sector fell sharply in June, with U.S. tariffs affecting demand and leading to the biggest output cut in five years. Trump said on Tuesday he was not considering extending the deadline for countries to negotiate trade deals with the U.S. Canada aims to lift all tariffs as part of a deal with the U.S., Ottawa's Washington Ambassador told The Globe and Mail. 'There are concerns as we are still in negotiations and Mr. Trump is still in a fairly bellicose mood via his friends and trading partners…but we have climbed that wall of anxiety or stress with our resources and our financial institutions,' Caldwell Securities Chairman Thomas Caldwell said. On the TSX, healthcare stocks rose 1.6%, while mining shares advanced 1.2%, tracking a rise in copper prices. Hudbay Minerals and Capstone Copper gained 3.2% and 5.7%, respectively. Communication stocks rose 1.5%, with Rogers Communications adding 3.6% after BMO raised its price target. Conversely, technology stocks were the biggest laggards, falling 1.1%. BlackBerry shares fell 6.9% to the bottom of the index. Among individual stocks, Bombardier rose 14.6% to the top of the index after the company said on Monday it had secured an order for 50 Challenger and Global aircraft in a $1.7 billion deal including a service agreement. MDA Space was up 4.2% after it completed the acquisition of SatixFy Communications. First Quantum rose 5.8% after Barclays raised its price target. Meanwhile, U.S. data showed private payrolls unexpectedly fell in June, with job gains being smaller than estimated during the month.

Real estate stocks, miners propel Australian shares higher

Australian shares rose on Wednesday, helped by mining stocks due to a rise in commodity prices, while favourable interest rate cut expectations from the Reserve Bank of Australia provided a boost to real estate stocks. The S&P/ASX 200 index rose 0.4% to 8,577.0 points by 0050 GMT. Rate sensitive real estate stocks led gains among Australian equities, rising 1%, after taking cues from expectations of a imminent rate cut from the central bank when it meets next week. Swaps indicate a 95.1% chance of a quarter-point cash rate reduction at the central bank's monetary policy meeting next week. Lower borrowing costs would put more money into consumers' hands, boosting property demand. Financial stocks were largely unchanged, likely taking a breather after a stellar run so far this year. Top bank Commonwealth Bank of Australia and Westpac rose 0.3% each, while National Australia Bank gained 1%. Markets are now awaiting the retail sales data for May due later in the day after a dip in April raised concerns about consumer spending. Investors also await US economic data this week, to gauge the outlook of interest rate cuts from the Federal Reserve. In Sydney, mining stocks rose 0.9% after strong manufacturing data from China, Australia's top trading partner, boosted copper prices to a three-month high on Tuesday. Shares of BHP Group and Rio Tinto rose 1.2% and 0.6%, respectively. Higher oil prices boosted energy stocks, which rose 0.3%. Sector majors Woodside Energy and Santos rose 0.3% each. Shares of Australian pizza chain operator Domino's Pizza Enterprises fell as much as 19% to become one of the top losers in the benchmark index after the firm said its group CEO Mark van Dyck would be stepping down. Airline operator Qantas shares fell 3.7% after it confirmed a cyber incident at one of its contact centres impacting customer data. New Zealand's benchmark S&P/NZX 50 index rose 0.4% to 12,789.55.
