A campaign has been launched to defend music festivals in Brockwell Park
The group, Protect Brockwell Park (PBP), which includes actor Mark Rylance, was complaining about several impacts of the festivals on the space, including walls being erected in the park, noise and environmental damage.
But later a counter campaign appeared on social media, called SayYesLambeth. This group claimed to be a grassroots organisation fighting to keep festivals in Brockwell Park. 'Fighting for culture, joy and community in Lambeth. Say YES to homes. YES to nightlife. YES to events in our parks,' read their Instagram bio.
However, some locals claimed this group was a fake, created by the local council or the festival organisers to make PBP look bad. London Centric investigated, and reported that the SayYesLambeth campaign was created by 'five gays with a laptop' – a group of friends who belong to a queer rugby team in south London. London Centric's Jim Waterson spoke with David, a member of the group who lives in Brixton. David asked Waterson not to publish his last name due to his work in the civil service.
' London Centric has yet to find anything to suggest SayYesLambeth is run by anyone other than an informal group of rugby-playing friends,' said the report.

In an open letter posted on the SayYesLambeth Instagram, the group wrote: 'For too long, a small but powerful group has dominated the debate about Lambeth's future – shouting down new homes, opposing events in our parks, and trying to silence our vibrant night-time economy. Their voices are loud, organised, and well-funded. But they do not speak for all of us.
'We, the young people, the renters, the workers, the small business owners, the creatives – we are the majority. And now it's time to make ourselves heard.
'Lambeth's night-time economy isn't just about entertainment – it's about life, jobs, and opportunity. From music venues to clubs, from bars to late-night cafés, these spaces are vital for our communities. They provide work, they foster creativity, and they offer safe spaces for people from all walks of life. Without them, Lambeth risks becoming sterile, unaffordable, and soulless.
'We also need to protect events in our parks. Mighty Hoopla, Wide Awake, Lambeth Country Show and other festivals bring life, joy, and connection to Lambeth. They showcase our diversity, support local businesses, and give thousands of people access to music, culture, and community right on their doorstep. Parks are for everyone – and events are part of that shared, joyful use.'
SayYesLambeth also created a petition to save the festivals, which had 512 signatures at the time of writing.
Highlighting the festivals' positive impact on local businesses, Brockwell Live said in a statement: 'Brockwell Live delivers a series of free and ticketed events in Brockwell Park with more than half of attendees coming from across Greater London.
'Celebrating the city's diverse music and culture, events include the capital's largest Caribbean and African music festival, a nationally significant queer pop festival and a critically acclaimed celebration of jazz, funk and soul.
'Since 2023, we have co-produced the Lambeth Country Show, a free event run by Lambeth Council for 50 years, helping Lambeth save over £700,000 in 2024.
'Brockwell Live proudly supports many local organisations through the Brockwell Live Community Fund and has donated over £150,000 to date.
'We take our stewardship of Brockwell Park seriously. We welcome scrutiny and maintain open channels for dialogue with residents, councillors, and community groups at all times.'
The forthcoming legal challenge could see Brockwell Park's festivals cancelled, and potentially change the face of day festivals in the capital forever. The hearing will take place on Wednesday, May 14.

Hulk Hogan's distressing 911 call revealed as medics rush to WWE icon's home
The disturbing 911 call to Hulk Hogan's home as been revealed following his death aged 71. WWE icon Hulk died at his home in Clearwater, Florida following reports of a cardiac arrest. Medics rushed to his house as they tried to save the wrestling star in the early hours of Thursday morning. Operators of the 911 call could be heard dispatching paramedics to the scene as they noted the matter was for a cardiac arrest. Officials responded to the call at 9:51am, as Hulk received treatment from Clearwater Fire & Rescue before being taken to a nearby hospital. He died at the hospital, according to reports. A "slew of police cars and EMTs were parked outside Hogan's home," before he was taken out on a stretcher, according to TMZ. Hulk's death was confirmed by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), in a statement on X which read: 'WWE is saddened to learn WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan has passed away. 'One of pop culture's most recognisable figures, Hogan helped WWE achieve global recognition in the 1980s. WWE extends its condolences to Hogan's family, friends, and fans.' In his final Instagram video, Hulk made a promotional clip for Real American Beer where he sipped on the alcoholic beverage and encouraged his fans to try the patriotic beer. "Real American beer, made in America, by real Americans," he said before taking a sip. "Get some brother. That's America brother," he added. The wrestling world have begun reacting to the shock news of Hulk's death, as he's been hailed as "one of pop culture's most recognisable figures". Ric Flair, who is a champion in wrestling like Hulk, paid tribute as he wrote online: ""I Am Absolutely Shocked To Hear About The Passing Of My Close Friend @HulkHogan! Kneecap describe decision to ban them from Hungary as ‘political distraction'
The trio, who are outspoken supporters of Palestine, were due to perform at Sziget Festival on August 11 and remain on the line-up on its website. Government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs wrote on social media platform X that the decision to ban Kneecap was because the group's 'members repeatedly engage in antisemitic hate speech supporting terrorism and terrorist groups'. But in a statement posted on Instagram, Kneecap described the decision to bar them from entry as 'political distraction' and pointed out that none of the group has any criminal convictions. A spokeswoman for Sziget Festival also described the move as 'unnecessary and regrettable'. 'Cancel culture and cultural boycotts are not the solution,' she added. The statement from Kneecap said: 'To the tens of thousands of fans who we were buzzing to see in person at Sziget, we're sorry we won't be with you. 'The authoritarian government of Viktor Orban say we 'pose a national security threat'. 'Which is f****** outrageous coming from a man who welcomed Netanyahu, a wanted war criminal, like a hero just a few weeks ago. 'There is no legal basis for his actions, no member of Kneecap has ever been convicted of any crime in any country. We stand against all hate crimes and Kneecap champions love and solidarity as well as calling out injustices whenever we see it. The spokeswoman for Sziget Festival said: 'Following concerns raised by government and pressure groups across Hungary over the past weeks at the prospect of Kneecap performing, we have liaised closely with the band and they reassured us that their performance would not contravene either Sziget's values or Hungarian law. 'Over the past 30 years, Sziget has served as a free and safe place for different cultures, hosting artists and visitors from around the world, earning significant recognition in the international community and enhancing Hungary's reputation. 'We fear that the government's decision announced today to ban Kneecap may not only damage the reputation of Sziget, but also negatively affect Hungary's standing worldwide.' Kneecap – comprised of Liam Og O hAnnaidh, Naoise O Caireallain, and JJ O Dochartaigh – were formed in Belfast and released their first single in 2017. They hit the headlines recently after O hAnnaidh, who performs under the name Mo Chara, was charged with a terror offence relating to allegedly displaying a flag in support of Hezbollah. In May, the Metropolitan Police said the group were being investigated by counter-terrorism police after videos emerged allegedly showing them shouting 'Up Hamas, up Hezbollah' and 'Kill your local MP'. The group apologised to the families of murdered MPs and said they have 'never supported' Hamas or Hezbollah, which are banned in the UK. They were also investigated over their set at Glastonbury Festival in June, but last week Avon and Somerset Police confirmed they would be taking no further action.
