SCMP Plus wins gold at Digital Media Awards Asia

The gold in the digital subscription/reader revenue project category was one of two top awards picked up by the Post at the Digital Media Awards Asia in Kuala Lumpur. Morning Studio, the Post's commercial content arm, got top prize in its category for a project with Cathay Pacific's air-cargo unit about carrying pandas to Hong Kong.

With the launch of SCMP Plus on May 6, 2024, the Post introduced a full suite of subscription tiers: standard, which provides access to scmp.com; Plus, which comprises digital access and
SCMP Plus , a premium analysis and opinion platform; and Bundle Plus, which adds delivery of the print newspaper to the other two platforms.
'The award affirms that a product built on journalism, news judgment, experience, user needs and curation has a place in an industry that is coming to grips with AI-generated content and short videos,' said Chow Chung Yan, the executive editor of the Post. Wan-IFRA, which organised the awards, said in a request for submissions in the digital category that it was seeking entries that 'demonstrate real results and metrics, understanding of brand strengths, clarity for the reader or customer, and an effective call to action'.

China's third and most advanced aircraft carrier may have successfully conducted a fighter jet catapult take-off drill, according to the latest footage aired by state broadcaster CCTV. The feat marks a key milestone for the Fujian – China's first aircraft carrier equipped with an electromagnetic catapult – before its expected entry into service this year. The 6½ minute segment showing the apparently successful take-off was aired as part of Forging Ahead, a five-episode series launched on August 1 to mark the 98th anniversary of the People's Liberation Army (PLA). Hong Kong leader John Lee in safety pledge over bottled water deals
Hong Kong leader John Lee Ka-chiu has pledged to maintain safety as he weighed in on a deal to buy mainland Chinese brands of bottled water for some government offices that will save taxpayers HK$16 million a year. Advertisement Lee also said on Sunday that water samples would be checked regularly and the government would cancel the contracts if standards were not met. 'For drinking water, we attach much importance to safety. It is reflected in our tendering process,' he said. 'Anyone who places a bid must produce a certification of water quality issued by an independent laboratory. Our system also requires the supplier to submit certification from time to time, not only during the tendering process. 'We will also take water samples for regular checks. If we find that [the water quality] does not meet our standards, we can immediately end the contractual relationship with [the supplier].' Advertisement Lee said the government would not compromise on water quality and he was confident that the prevailing system had been effectively and stringently enforced.

How China's new ‘Darwin Monkey' could shake up future of AI in world first
Chinese engineers have unveiled the world's first brain-like computer made up of more than 2 billion artificial neurons. The neuron count of the 'Darwin Monkey' approaches that of a macaque and could be used to advance human brain-inspired artificial intelligence (AI), according to its developers at Zhejiang University. The Darwin Monkey is the latest generation of brain-inspired computers produced by Zhejiang University researchers. 'This is the world's first brain-like computer based on a dedicated neuromorphic chip with more than 2 billion neurons,' the university said on its social media account on Saturday. The computing system, made up of 960 Darwin 3 brain-inspired computing chips creating over 100 billion synapses, is 'a step closer to achieving more advanced brain-like intelligence', it said in the post. The Darwin Monkey has been successfully deployed to complete tasks like content generation, logical reasoning and mathematics, using the groundbreaking Chinese AI company DeepSeek's brain-like large model.
