Zohran Mamdani reacts to horrific Midtown Manhattan shooting that killed 4, including an NYPD officer
'I'm heartbroken to learn of the horrific shooting in Midtown and I am holding the victims, their families, and the NYPD officer in critical condition in my thoughts,' the Indian-origin politician wrote. He added, 'Grateful for all of our first responders on the ground.'
Mamdani reacted while responding to a tweet shared by NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. 'At this time, the scene has been contained and the lone shooter has been neutralized,' she wrote on X.

According to a CNN report, four people were killed in the attack. Citing Gun Violence Archive, the outlet reported that it was the 254th mass shooting in America in 2025.
Who was the NYC shooter?
Shane Tamura is identified as the gunman who opened fire inside a Midtown Manhattan building. A picture which has surfaced on social media shows the suspected shooter entering the skyscraper wearing a jacket and shades. He was reportedly a Canadian football player with a concealed carry permit from Nevada. In the visuals, he was seen carrying an AR-15.
Though there is no official statement about the motive behind the shooting, several internet users have claimed that he opened fire after failing to qualify as an NFL player.
The outlet reported that the gunman exchanged fire with the NYPD cop before heading to the 33rd floor of the building that contains Blackstone and the NFL headquarters.
According to reports, the suspect was found dead in the building from what is believed to be self-inflicted injury.

On one hand, we were about to do a BTA with that country, and all along he was saying our PM is a close friend and US-India relations have a special strategic character, and now this.'He also stressed the unpredictable nature of Trump's trade moves: 'The transactional nature of the US president is such that you have to give something to get something. We have our red lines on dairy and agricultural products, and if both sides respect each other's red lines, then something meaningful and win-win can come out. But we need to see the fine print of the official documents first, and I'm sure a negotiation process will start rolling once that is clear.' Steel and aluminium in focus Steel and aluminium account for over 60% of India's engineering exports to the US. With the new tariff structure, products such as hot-rolled steel coils, stainless steel products, aluminium sheets, and alloys will face immediate cost escalations, likely eroding their competitiveness in the US analysts said the tariff move could also prompt buyers in the US to shift sourcing to suppliers such as Vietnam, Mexico, or domestic US producers. 'Given that Indian steel and aluminium exports operate on tight margins, absorbing a 25% tariff is unviable. The most likely scenario is a drop in shipments and renegotiations of contracts,' said a Mumbai-based metal industry said EEPC is already working on mitigation strategies. 'We need to expand our global footprint further into South America—we're very close to signing FTAs with Chile and Peru. We should also double down on Mexico and work toward an agreement there. These three are emerging growth hotspots for engineering goods. We are in active dialogue with the EU as well. Derisking our global exposure holds the key in this tariff-ridden environment, so while our dependence on the US market cannot be completely eliminated, it can certainly be reduced.'He added that agriculture and dairy remain India's clear red lines in trade negotiations: 'We can't give away agriculture and dairy—that's definitely our red line.'For now, the EEPC chief has advised exporters to exercise caution until further clarity emerges. 'My message to engineering players and EEPC members will be: once we know the extent of penalties, we will suggest the roadmap ahead,' he said.

Punjab and Haryana HC dismisses Kangana's plea for quashing summoning order against her
Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday dismissed the plea of actress-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut for quashing the summoning order against her by a local court in Bathinda in a defamation case over her farm protest remark against an elderly woman farmer. "There are specific allegations against the petitioner who is a celebrity, that false and defamatory imputations by her in the retweet have dented the respondent's reputation and lowered her in her own estimation, as also in the eyes of others. Therefore, filing of the complaint to vindicate her rights cannot be termed mala fide," Justice Tribhuvan Singh Dahiya observed. The defamation complaint against the BJP's Member of Parliament was filed by Mahinder Kaur (73) of Bahadurgarh Jandian village in Bathinda district, alleging that Kangana had defamed her in a post on the social media platform X by identifying her wrongly as Bilkis Bano of Shaheen Bagh fame and implying that such women could be hired to protest for Rs 100. In her retweet, Kangana had commented: "Ha ha ha, she is the same dadi who featured in Time magazine for being the most powerful Indian... And she is available for 100 rupees. Pakistani jurno's have hijacked international PR for India in an embarrassing way. We need our own people to speak for us internationally." This was in reference to a tweet by Gautam Yadav, which carried the photograph of the complainant, Kaur, who contended that the defamatory content not only hurt her pride and honour, but also lowered her reputation among fellow protestors. Kaur asserted she had no connection with the Shaheen Bagh protests or the woman featured in Time magazine, and that the imputations were wholly false. Kaur said she belonged to a farming family, actively participated in the farmers' agitation, and that the remarks made by Kangna Ranaut had subjected her to public ridicule and caused mental distress. After hearing the matter at length, the High Court found no merit in the petition and dismissed it. The post, which was later deleted, targeted Mahinder Kaur during her participation in the farmers' agitation at Delhi's borders. On February 22, 2022, the judicial magistrate in Bathinda issued a summons asking Kangana to appear before the court. Aggrieved by the lower court order, she had approached the High Court, contending that the trial court had misapplied Section 202 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
