Anwar applauded by US for brokering Cambodia-Thailand ceasefire

KUALA LUMPUR - The United States (US) has commended Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's leadership in brokering the immediate and unconditional ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US applauds the ceasefire declaration between Cambodia and Thailand announced on Monday. "We are grateful to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for his leadership and for hosting the ceasefire talks,' he said in a statement released by the State Department late on Monday.
Rubio urged Thailand and Cambodia to fully honour their commitments to end the conflict and prevent further escalation along their disputed border.
"President Donald Trump and I are committed to an immediate cessation of violence and expect the governments of Cambodia and Thailand to fully honour their commitments to end this conflict.'
Rubio said the US will remain committed to and engaged in the US-Malaysia-organised process to end the conflict.
"We urge all parties to follow through on their commitments,' he added.
Earlier, a special meeting, brokered by Anwar in his capacity as the current ASEAN Chair, was held at the official residence of the Malaysian prime minister - the Seri Perdana Complex - in Putrajaya.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai attended the special meeting, which began at 3 pm.
This is their first face-to-face encounter since tensions erupted between the two neighbours on July 24. The meeting lasted nearly two and a half hours.
Also in attendance were United States (US) Ambassador to Malaysia, Edgard Kagan, and Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia, Ouyang Yujing. The US was a co-organiser of the meeting, while China was an observer to promote a peaceful resolution to the ongoing situation.
At a joint press conference after the meeting, Anwar announced that Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire amid rising tensions along their disputed border.
The two Southeast Asian neighbours have a long history of diplomatic rows over an 817-kilometre undemarcated stretch of their shared border.
Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have been simmering since May 28 following a skirmish between their troops near the disputed Preah Vihear border area, which claimed the life of a Cambodian soldier. - BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia held discussions with China and Brazil on aircraft procurement before moving ahead with plans to purchase Boeing planes, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. Anwar said the decision to acquire the aircraft was made by Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) following the carrier's return to profitability after years of financial losses. "The aircraft needed to be purchased. Since 2004, this is the first time Malaysia Airlines has recorded a profit after years of losses. "As for Malaysia Airlines purchasing Boeing aircraft, that was a decision made by MAG. They had two options for this fleet, and yes, they had to make a purchase. "For the first time after years of losses, they recorded a profit, due to the management decisions. We did not interfere politically. Management must remain transparent and efficient," he said in the Dewan Rakyat today. He added that alongside the Boeing order, MAG had also placed orders last year for wide-body aircraft from Airbus. Malaysia, Anwar said, had also engaged in discussions with Brazil and China. He said, however, that China responded that their aircraft were suited for domestic use, while Brazil has yet to deliver despite an earlier order. Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said the government had imposed a condition that aircraft manufacturers must carry out production in Malaysia, a requirement that both Boeing and Airbus already meet. "Airbus wings, for example, are produced in Negri Sembilan, Kulim and Selangor. The same goes for Boeing components. "There is a rapidly rising demand for routes to India, China and Japan, requiring MAS to ramp up its fleet capacity. "If we support the private sector like AirAsia, why can't we do the same for Malaysia Airlines?" he added," he said. Yesterday, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz had said Malaysia has committed US$242.56 billion (RM1.14 trillion) in purchases and investments in the United States as part of efforts to narrow the trade imbalance between the two countries. Tengku Zafrul said the deals made between Malaysia and the US include the procurement of Boeing aircraft by MAG worth US$19 billion as part of a long-term, phased plan to renew and expand its fleet capacity.

Streamlined Perkeso initiative sees 44,998 in B40 group receive aid
KUALA LUMPUR: The Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) has extended assistance to 44,998 individuals nationwide through its Social Synergy Programme from 2019 up to July this year. Its chief executive officer, Datuk Seri Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed, said the initiative has streamlined the aid process by eliminating the need for individuals to knock on the doors of multiple social aid agencies. "The programme, first developed in 2017 as a Perkeso initiative, was designed to eradicate poverty and enhance the standard of living by ensuring that eligible recipients, particularly those in the B40 group, are not left out of the assistance ecosystem. "The issue of exclusion error was highlighted in a 2018 global monitoring agency survey, which revealed that 34 per cent of Malaysian households who were eligible for aid did not receive the financial assistance they urgently needed," he said in his speech at the Social Synergy Congress today. To address this, he said the Social Synergy Programme, which to date has recorded 979 collaborations involving 117 agencies and 862 community leaders nationwide, now acts as the eyes and ears of Perkeso. Azman cited an example where, upon the death of a contributor, strategic partners immediately alert Perkeso to verify the next of kin's eligibility for benefits. "All strategic partners complement one another by matching individuals in need, referred to as prospects, with the relevant agencies under the umbrella of the Social Synergy Programme. "I am pleased to share that between 2019 and July this year, 44,998 prospects from across the country were successfully channelled to various agencies for aid. This integrated approach means those in need no longer have to seek help from one agency after another," he said. He added that Perkeso officers must not remain passive behind counters, waiting for contributors or their next of kin to come forward. "Instead, Perkeso must be proactive by going to the ground to identify and assist eligible contributors and their families. We must be present to lift those who have fallen. "We want the first knock on the door of a grieving family to come not from a debt collector, but from Perkeso, delivering social justice in their time of need," he said. Speaking about the congress, now in its third edition, Azman said it was more than just a physical gathering. "It is a manifestation of unity among various agencies in our mission to eradicate hardcore poverty and to build an inclusive and sustainable social protection network. "With the theme 'Social Synergy Programme: Culture or Process?', this congress invites us to reflect critically — is Social Synergy merely an administrative process governed by models and guidelines, or has it evolved into a culture of inter-agency collaboration rooted in values of humanity, empathy and care?" he said. During the event, Perkeso also signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) with three strategic partners, believed to strengthen its mission of building a comprehensive, inclusive and sustainable social protection system. The signing, held in conjunction with the Social Synergy Congress today, involved the Penang Regional Development Authority (Perda), the Darul Ta'zim Family Development Foundation (YPKDT), and One Hope Welfare & Charity. The partnership between Perkeso and the three organisations covers cross-agency referral of aid recipients, targeted data sharing and matching, as well as the empowerment of human capital through skills development and socio-economic support.

Reach consensus first before seeking MP allocations, Anwar tells Opposition
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has advised opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) to first reach a consensus among themselves before making any requests regarding allocations for opposition representatives. Anwar said that if the Opposition MPs succeed in reaching an agreement, they could then meet with Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who has been given the mandate to handle the matter. 'I agree; that's why I've asked the DPM (Fadillah) to be open to listening. But for it to begin, there must first be a consensus among the opposition MPs, and as of now, there is none. Some agree to negotiate, others do not. 'So I suggest that the Honourable Member for Arau (Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim) first hold talks with Perikatan Nasional (PN) and the other MPs, reach a consensus, and then inform the DPM (Fadillah), who has been given the mandate,' he said in response to Shahidan (PN-Arau) during the Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat today regarding allocations for opposition MPs. Responding to Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin's stated readiness to meet with the Prime Minister to discuss the matter, Anwar said the issue of allocations had already been entrusted to Fadillah. 'I'm open to meeting, but as for allocations, we've already given the mandate to the DPM (Fadillah), so I'll leave that matter to him.
