Shillong: PM Modi's 'Mann Ki Baat' broadcast on Sunday celebrated Meghalaya's unique Eri silk, which has recently received the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) Tag.
"Eri silk is not just a fabric; it is a heritage of Meghalaya, lovingly preserved and enriched over generations, especially by the Khasi community," said the PM.
He noted its distinct production process, which is entirely non-violent, earning it the name 'Ahimsa Silk', as the silkworms are not harmed in its extraction.
This method involves allowing the silkworms to naturally emerge from their cocoons before the silk is harvested.
"Nowadays, the demand for such products is rising rapidly in the world, which do not involve violence and do not have any ill effect on nature. Hence, Eri silk of Meghalaya is a perfect product for the global market," the PM underscored.
He further said, "This silk keeps you warm in winters and cool in summers, making it ideal for diverse climates and expanding its appeal in both national and international markets."
Calling upon the nation to embrace Khadi, handlooms and handicrafts, the PM Modi reiterated the spirit of 'Vocal for Local' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan'.
Recently, the PM had thanked CM Conrad Sangma for having presented him with a piece of 'Ryndia Silk' fabric, a symbol of Meghalaya's cultural heritage and pride.
"Your thoughtfulness is touching and is deeply appreciated," the PM wrote to Conrad.
Conrad, in turn, expressed his gratitude to the PM. "Hon'ble PM, Sh. @narendramodi ji in his #mannkibaat2025 episode makes special mention of #Meghalaya's recently GI tagged Eri Silk also called Ahimsa Silk owing to its cruelty-free and natural production method. A great encouragement to our heritage textile weavers. Thank you Hon'blePM!"

SC refuses to entertain Lalit Modi's plea seeking that BCCI pay penalty imposed on him by ED
The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a petition filed by former Indian Premier League chairperson Lalit Modi seeking directions to the Board of Control for Cricket in India to pay a Rs 10.65 crore penalty imposed on him by the Enforcement Directorate for violating the Foreign Exchange Management Act, Live Law reported. A bench of Justices PS Narasimha and R Mahadevan said that Modi could pursue civil remedies seeking indemnification. The bench was dealing with an appeal filed by the former IPL chairperson against a Bombay High Court order dismissing his plea, Bar and Bench reported. Modi has been under investigation by Indian authorities for alleged foreign exchange violations and a Rs 425-crore television rights deal for the 2009 edition of the IPL with World Sports Group. He fled India after attending only one interrogation session with the Income Tax Department and Enforcement Directorate officials in Mumbai. In 2018, the Enforcement Directorate imposed a fine of Rs 121.56 crore on several entities, including the BCCI, its then chairperson N Srinivasan and others. Out of this amount, Modi had been ordered to pay Rs 10.65 crore, Bar and Bench reported. The penalty, which was part of the larger Enforcement Directorate investigation into the 2009 edition of the IPL, was imposed after it was alleged that over Rs 243 crore was allegedly transferred outside India in contravention of Foreign Exchange Management Act regulations. On December 19, the High Court had dismissed a petition filed by Modi seeking an order to the BCCI to pay the penalty, calling it 'frivolous' and 'wholly misconceived', PTI reported. It also imposed a Rs 1 lakh fine on Modi. In his petition, Modi had said that he served as the BCCI vice president and the chairperson of the IPL governing council when the alleged violations took place. He argued that on this account, the BCCI was obligated to indemnify him under its bylaws. However, the High Court, citing a 2005 Supreme Court ruling, said that the BCCI was not considered a 'state' under Article 12 of the Constitution and hence no writ could be issued against it, PTI reported. Modi subsequently filed a Special Leave Petition before the Supreme Court against the High Court's decision. In the Supreme Court on Monday, the bench reiterated that the BCCI was not a 'state' under Article 12 and hence not directly amenable to writ jurisdiction under Article 226, except in certain limited functional public duties like organising sports events, Live Law reported.

BRICS Summit: PM Modi To Visit Rio With Global South High On Agenda
Last Updated: PM Modi is set to attend the 17th BRICS Summit with partnership and cooperation among Global South nations high on the agenda. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to attend the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from July 5 to 8, with partnership and cooperation among Global South nations high on the agenda. At the BRICS Summit, Prime Minister Modi will participate in discussions on major global challenges, including reforms in global governance, peace and security, strengthening multilateralism, ethical use of artificial intelligence, climate action, global health, and financial collaboration. PM Modi is also expected to hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit. In Brasília, he will meet with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to deepen the Strategic Partnership, with discussions likely to cover key sectors such as trade, defence, energy, space, technology, agriculture, and health. Notably, PM Modi's Rio visit is part of his five-nation tour in July 2025, beginning with a two-day visit to Ghana on July 2-3. This will be his first bilateral visit to Ghana and the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in more than three decades. After his visit to Ghana, the Prime Minister will travel to Trinidad and Tobago from July 3 to 4, at the invitation of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. He will then head to Argentina from July 4 to 5 for bilateral talks with President Javier Milei. From July 5 to 8, PM Modi will be in Rio to attend the BRICS Summit. Concluding his multi-nation tour, PM Modi is scheduled to visit Namibia on July 9, following an invitation from President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. In a major development in 2024, the group extended membership to six additional countries: Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Indonesia is also expected to formally join the bloc soon, following a unanimous decision made at the 2023 BRICS Summit. Notably, BRICS unites eleven major emerging economies, collectively accounting for approximately 49.5 per cent of the global population, about 40 per cent of the world's GDP, and nearly 26 per cent of global trade. India-Brazil Ties During a phone call with PM Modi on May 8, a day after India launched Operation Sindoor in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed strong support for India's stance against terrorism. Brazil also remains India's largest trading partner in South America, while India ranks as Brazil's ninth-largest trading partner. In the financial year 2024–25, bilateral trade between the two nations reached USD 12.20 billion. Further, Indian companies have a growing presence in Brazil across sectors like pharmaceuticals, automobiles, and energy. Defence cooperation is also a key area of focus during PM Modi's visit to Brazil. Both countries are jointly developing Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft, and Brazilian aerospace firm Embraer has signed an MoU with Mahindra to collaborate on the C-390 Millennium Multi-Mission Transport Aircraft.
