UK holidaymakers face major change as new EU passport rules confirmed

The EU will roll out the new entry/exit system in the Schengen zones in October The UK Government today announced that the European Union's (EU) new Entry/Exit System (EES) will begin in October. The EES is a digital border control platform that will replace manual passport stamping for non-EU nationals entering the Schengen Area, including countries such as Spain and Greece. ‌ It forms part of the EU's broader digital transformation of border management, which aims to improve security, detect overstays, and streamline border procedures. Approved last week by the European Parliament with a vote of 572 to 42 (with 67 abstentions), the EES introduces biometric registration and automated entry logs at external EU borders ‌ According to from October 12, Brits will need to create a digital record on their first visit to the Schengen area, either at the port or airport on arrival. They will also be required to submit fingerprints and have their photos taken at dedicated booths. ‌ They may also be required to answer the Schengen Border Code questions. Travellers will not need to provide any information before arriving in a Schengen country. The travel insider, Ivaylo Danailov, CEO of SkyRefund, said: "While the Entry/Exit System is primarily about immigration control rather than security screening or boarding, it will still likely have an impact on overall passenger flow, especially at border control points. ‌ "Biometric capture and passport scanning should be able to process multiple passengers simultaneously and reduce border queues, helping passengers reach security and boarding gates more quickly. "Since the Exit/Entry system will hold recent travel history and biometric data, less time per passenger should be needed, especially for regular or low-risk travellers. ‌ "It also means airlines and border authorities will have more accurate, real-time information about who has entered or exited the Schengen area. "That should help reduce cases of denied boarding due to visa overstays or documentation issues, which can delay flight departures." Advice posted on states: "If you enter the Schengen area through the Port of Dover, Eurotunnel at Folkestone or St Pancras International, this information will be taken at the border, before you leave the UK. You may also need to provide either your fingerprint or photo when you leave the Schengen area. ‌ "EES may take each passenger a few extra minutes to complete so be prepared to wait longer than usual at the border once the system starts. "If you frequently travel to the Schengen area for work and/or leisure purposes, you must ensure that your total stay in the Schengen area is no more than 90 days in every 180 days. ‌ "You must be aware of the penalty and enforcement approach for exceeding the immigration limit in any individual Member State you plan to travel to, or through." The countries in the Schengen area are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Brits going on holiday urged to make Google search as soon as they land

Holidays can be an expensive business, with accommodation, flights, and luggage all adding to the cost - so it's vital to save money wherever you can If you're jetting off on holiday this year, the chances are you'll want everything to go without a hitch. Foreign trips can be costly, with hotels, flights, and baggage all bumping up the price - so it's crucial to cut costs wherever possible. ‌ Travel experts say carrying out one quick task the moment you touch down could save you a lot of hassle. It takes just minutes and involves conducting a rapid Google search on your phone. ‌ According to luxury transfer firm SCS Chauffeurs, there's a straightforward trick to dodge being ripped off by searching for 'Bank ATM' on Google Maps once you arrive - and steering clear of standalone machines in airports, reports the Express. ‌ For Brits, taking cash from overseas ATMs could be costing hundreds during a fortnight's getaway. Private cash machines can slap on charges of up to €10 for withdrawals, so taking money out twice daily for 14 days could set you back nearly €200 - and that's before percentage conversion rate fees. Hadleigh Diamond, Commercial Director at SCS Chauffeurs, said: "We see it all the time. People land, head straight to the first ATM they see, and get charged eye-watering fees without realising it. ‌ "Searching 'Bank ATM' on Google Maps takes seconds - and it could save you £20 on your very first withdrawal." Why are bank ATMs cheaper? Cash dispensers in airport and city-centre locations are more likely to be run by third-party operators, not actual banks, resulting in steeper charges and poorer rates. ‌ Lots of machines provide "conversion to GBP" - known as Dynamic Currency Conversion - which frequently employs unfavourable exchange rates and incorporates concealed charges. This straightforward search will usually find machines within or next to established banks such as Santander, ING, or HSBC. These generally use more reasonable interbank rates, reduced charges, and don't automatically convert your currency, whilst also frequently featuring CCTV and secure cash machines away from curious onlookers. Hadleigh continued: "Travellers often overprepare for airport delays, baggage issues and flight changes but forget about something as simple as where they withdraw their money. This is an easy win - and one of the first things we recommend before a trip."

You could be missing out on key benefits unless you do one thing

Scots might not be aware of the benefits they are entitled to but a major banking service could change that Over a quarter of a million Scots are out of work due to long-term sickness or having a disability after a rise caused by the pandemic. The UK Government recently proposed tightening eligibility for disability and sickness benefits. ‌ This is in a bid to slow the rate of social security spending. In Scotland, from April 2024 to January 2025, 921,819 people received benefits from Social Security Scotland. ‌ But how do people know if they are entitled to benefits? Well, thousands of people have accessed a benefits calculator service provided by Nationwide Building Society in the first month of its launch. ‌ The service helps make people aware of the support they could be deserving of. More than 15,000 people have completed a "quick indicator", and more than 4,000 have completed the "full calculator," Nationwide said. The quick indicator gives people a "high level" overview of what they may be eligible for. If the quick indicator shows potential eligibility, people may proceed to the more detailed full calculator step. Kathryn Townsend, Nationwide head of customer vulnerability and accessibility, said: "By offering the choice of an online process and a telephone call, we are hopefully making what can be a daunting and confusing experience that little bit simpler." ‌ The 'better off' calculator has been launched in partnership with analytics company Policy in Practice. It is available to non-Nationwide members as well as the society's own customers. People can access the service through Nationwide's website, app, and a dedicated phone line. Calls to the helpline are charged at standard rate, however, a call-back option is available on request. ‌ Regular savings accounts typically require a set monthly deposit and limit withdrawals, making them perfect for disciplined savers looking to steadily increase their savings while earning higher interest than standard accounts. ‌ Nationwide's Flex Regular Saver can be opened with just £1, and interest is paid each year on the account's anniversary. Monthly deposits are capped at £200, allowing a maximum contribution of £2,400 over the year. At the current interest rate, this would earn £84.50 in interest after 12 months. The account is open to UK residents aged 16 or over who already have a Nationwide current account. And there is another free, confidential benefits calculator that could ease the financial pressure going into summer. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! In just a few minutes you could find out how much you may be able to claim in extra support, just by entering details about yourself, your residential status, your working status and any savings you have.
