Crime severity index dropped four per cent last year, Statistics Canada says

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Sean Kilpatrick OTTAWA — The national statistics agency says the volume and severity of police-reported crime in Canada decreased four per cent last year, after three annual increases in a row. Statistics Canada says non-violent crime had a significant effect on the decline in the overall crime severity index in 2024. The non-violent crime severity index — including such crimes as property and drug offences — dropped six per cent last year, following a nine per cent increase from 2021 to 2023. The agency says the violent crime severity index decreased one per cent in 2024 and had a comparatively smaller effect on the overall picture. That particular index had risen for three previous consecutive years and had increased 15 per cent over that period. The crime severity index was developed to address the limitations of a police-reported crime rate that is driven by high-volume — but less serious — offences. Couple arrested for trying to cover up crash involving two children, police say

South Simcoe police arrested a mother and a father for reportedly trying to cover up a rollover collision involving their two children in Innisfil. According to the service, a witness contacted police on Friday about a two-vehicle crash in the area of 20 Sideroad and Gilford Road. Police say the witness reported one vehicle had rolled into the ditch with a female and two children inside. When officers arrived, police say a man was at the scene claiming to be the driver of the damaged vehicle, but the authorities say further investigation revealed he had shown up after-the-fact in a separate vehicle, which his wife left in with their children, ages 10 and one. 'Neither the male nor the female attempted to seek medical attention for the young children," South Simcoe police noted. Subsequently, the parents, from Lefroy, were arrested and charged. The woman faces failing or refusing to comply with demand, failing to provide the necessities of life to a child, and dangerous operation. The man was charged with public mischief - intent to cause other person to be suspect. They are scheduled to appear in court to answer to the charges next month. Police confirm the two children were located safe and taken for medical assessment. They were discharged shortly afterwards.

Man charged with 11 weapons offences in Eskasoni
One man has been charged with multiple weapons offences after a firearm and crossbow were seized by police in Eskasoni, N.S. Police say they received multiple reports of a person in possession of a firearm near Arena Road at around 11:20 p.m. on Saturday. According to a Tuesday news release, 39-year-old Stephen Morris of Eskasoni was arrested once officers attended the scene. Police were also able to find his vehicle where they seized a loaded firearm. A crossbow and other items were also seized from a residence on Sunrise Dr. after police executed a search warrant in relation to the investigation. Morris had his first court appearance on Monday. He has been charged with a total of 11 offences including: - using a firearm in the commission of an offence - careless use of a firearm - possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose Morris remains in custody pending future court appearances.
