Brendan Rodgers is said to still be keen on the midfielder but could face competition from West Ham for the free agent
Josh Brownhill has confirmed his departure from Burnley just over two months after leading them back to the Premier League.

And Brendan Rodgers is keen to take Brownhill to Celtic while West Ham are long-term admirers of the former Bristol City man, report colleagues at sister title the Daily Star.

Brownhill has been linked with the Premiership champions since January with just a few months left on his contract.

The midfielder scored 18 goals as Scott Parker's side finished second in the Championship last season.
But he is out of contract and revealed he will be leaving Turf Moor in search of a new challenge after five-and-a-half years.
In a statement on Instagram, the 29-year-old said: 'I've come to the unbelievably difficult decision that now is the right time for me to start the next part of my journey in football.
'Burnley is a place that has allowed me to develop, grow and build friends for the rest of my life.
'My decision has only ever been about me wanting to challenge myself further and continue to grow as a person and a professional.
'To wear the captain's armband was a real honour and something I was privileged to do.

'It really felt like the perfect way to sign off by scoring two goals in my last game at Turf Moor and being promoted with 100 points to the Premier League.'

Man City re-sign goalkeeper Trafford from Burnley on five-year deal

July 29 (Reuters) - Goalkeeper James Trafford has returned to Manchester City on a five-year contract after helping Burnley earn a promotion back to the Premier League with the fewest goals conceded in the Championship last season, City said on Tuesday. Englishman Trafford, who won the golden glove with 29 clean sheets in the Championship last season, has re-joined the club where he spent eight years as a youth player for 27 million pounds ($36 million), English media reports said. 'Rejoining City is such special and proud moment both for me and my family. I always dreamed that one day I would be able to come back to Manchester City," Trafford said in a statement shared by City. 'This is the place I call home – it's a truly special football club with fantastic people who make it such a unique place to work and play." Trafford played on loan at third-tier sides Accrington Stanley and Bolton Wanderers before making a permanent move to Burnley in 2023, where he played his first full season in the Premier League, making 28 appearances as the club was relegated. But the six-foot-six keeper returned to form in the Championship last season, with Burnley conceding only 16 goals in the campaign, 14 fewer than champions Leeds United. "I am still very young and hungry to keep learning and improving – and I know there is no better environment than Manchester City to help make me become the best goalkeeper I can be," Trafford added. City, who begin their quest for a seventh Premier League title in nine seasons when they visit Wolverhampton Wanderers on August 16, said Trafford would wear the number one jersey. Referee and VAR officials revealed for Celtic vs St Mirren

The Parkhead club begin the defence of their title on Sunday as they welcome Stephen Robinson's men to Glasgow's east end. As is tradition on the reigning champions' first home matchday of the campaign, the league flag will be unfurled before kick-off. Regarding the game itself, Don Robertson will take charge of proceedings. David Roome and Craig Ferguson will run the lines, with Greg Aitken on VAR duties. Graeme Leslie is the AVAR official. Read more: Celtic ended last season with a home game against St Mirren, James Forrest's late equaliser sparing their trophy day blushes. Brendan Rodgers will be hoping for a much smoother ride this time around against the Paisley outfit. Chris Sutton thinks the Parkhead boss has been 'calculated' with his recent comments. "The squad should not be weaker now than it was at the end of last season," he said, speaking at the launch of the William Hill Warm-Up show and podcast on Monday evening. "But that is the case. Tierney's signing is a huge boost, while Nygren coming in looks neat and tidy, but there are still areas to address. "A few days ago, Brendan Rodgers used the word 'ambition' in his press conference. He is very calculated in everything that he says, and that tells you everything. It is okay to get the baseball bat out right now, but there is still time in the window. "It is best to judge Celtic at the end of the window and see what happens in the next few weeks."

James Trafford completes Manchester City return in £27million deal

Trafford has signed a five-year contract with the side he left for Burnley in 2023 after City activated a £27million buy-back clause. 'Rejoining City is such a special and proud moment both for me and my family. I always dreamed that one day I would be able to come back to Manchester City,' said the 22-year-old. 'This is the place I call home – it's a truly special football club with fantastic people who make it such a unique place to work and play. 'I am also very excited and honoured to have been given the opportunity to work under Pep and with such a world-class group of players. 'I am still very young and hungry to keep learning and improving – and I know there is no better environment than Manchester City to help make me become the best goalkeeper I can be. 'I will do everything I can to help this great club look to achieve even more success.' James Trafford admits it was always his dream to return to Manchester City (Martin Rickett/PA) Trafford, who will wear the number one shirt, becomes the club's sixth signing of the summer after Rayan Ait-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders, Marcus Bettinelli, Rayan Cherki and Sverre Nypan. He joined City's academy in 2015 but after loans at Accrington and Bolton the need for regular first-team football – with Ederson still the man to displace at the Etihad Stadium – took him to Turf Moor. 'When I had the opportunity to go to Burnley I thought it was the right step for me in that moment and in the long-term it was to achieve to come back here. I'm happy that I've achieved it,' he added. City intend to retain the 31-year-old Ederson so Trafford will still have to get past an established number one. City's sporting director Hugo Viana said: 'James is already one of the most accomplished young goalkeepers in the English game, and we are delighted to welcome him back to Manchester City. 'We feel he is an ideal fit for this squad and will bring great quality to the goalkeeping department. 'We fully believe he will be really successful and a top goalkeeper for Manchester City and the national team. 'I also have no doubt that working with Pep and the technical staff here at City will only see James further develop his abilities.'
