City Cops To Conduct Security Audit Of All Women's Hostels

It has also been decided that all-woman Damini squads will visit such hostels in the day and beat marshals at night to check security systems.
Under the supervision of CP Ravinder Singal, details of all women's hostels is being collected across the zones where QR code-based patrolling would be encouraged.
While the culprits who intruded the Hingna hostel are still at large, zonal DCP Rishikesh Reddy said his team is now considering invoking negligence charges against the hostel warden, property owner, and others responsible for security.
Joint CP Navinchandra Reddy said the current patrolling patterns would be revised to intensify police visibility and presence in the vicinity of women's hostels. "The zonal DCPs will take regular follow-ups of the patrolling near such establishments," said Reddy.
On Thursday, senior inspector of Beltarodi police station Mukund Kawade organised the city police's flagship 'Police Didi' programme to create awareness among the residents of a govt hostel for women from underprivileged sections in Khapri.
The event focused on women's safety and self-defence. It also addressed internal and external safety concerns of the students residing in the hostel.
The programme highlighted robust safety measures revolving around a fully functional CCTV system, round-the-clock female guards, and strict protocols prohibiting entry of male outsiders after 6pm. The senior cops also urged the hostel authorities to monitor movements, meticulously maintain records, and ensure medical emergencies are managed with female guard as escort.
In addition to the 112 emergency helpline number, police shared other crucial contact numbers with the students, wardens, and hostel staff to enhance preparedness and response.

Nagpur: The Nagpur bench of Bombay high court recently referred the case of prolonged detention of a Nigerian national — despite being granted bail 10 months ago — to a larger bench for consideration as a public interest litigation (PIL), after govt authorities failed to transfer the accused to any foreigner detention centre. The accused, Emeka Udenje, was arrested on May 21, 2023, from Delhi by Nagpur Police's cyber cell, in connection with sections under Indian Penal Code for cheating and criminal breach of trust and Section 14 of Foreigners Act. He was remanded in judicial custody on May 27. On June 19, 2024, the judicial magistrate first class, Nagpur, granted Udenje bail on furnishing a Rs50,000 bond and a surety. Given his lapsed passport and visa, the court directed that he be placed in a foreigner detention centre to ensure his presence during trial, suggesting coordination with the district collector. After complying with the bail conditions, Udenje was released from Nagpur Central Jail on September 24, 2024, but was immediately detained again at the city's cyber police station. His application before the sessions court to modify the detention condition was rejected, prompting him to move the HC through counsels Madan Puranik and HR Nanoti. But two months later, when no transfer was executed, Udenje filed a fresh application, prompting the court to seek clarification. On inquiry, the govt reversed its stand, stating that no foreigner detention centres were operational in Maharashtra. Concerned with this contradiction and continued illegal detention of a foreign national despite being granted bail, the court observed: "Now there is an issue where foreign nationals are to be kept. There are two other foreign nationals, and the investigating agency is unable to decide their accommodation and detention. This aspect is to be dealt with by this court." Justice Joshi-Phalke noted, "If the foreign nationals are permitted to be released, there would be an apprehension of them fleeing away and difficulty in securing their presence." In view of the unresolved systemic concerns, the court directed that Udenje's case be placed before Bombay HC division bench at Nagpur as a PIL. ‘Operation U-Turn' Cuts Road Deaths by 62.5% in Nagpur
1 2 Nagpur: In a major boost to road safety, Nagpur Police's recently launched 'Operation U-Turn' has led to a dramatic 62.5% drop in road accident deaths in July 2025 compared to the same month last year. The operation, aimed primarily at curbing drunk driving and other dangerous road behaviours, was launched on July 10 and has been active for just 21 days. Under the leadership of CP Ravinder Singal and DCP (Traffic) Lohit Matani, more than 2,500 motorists and bikers were pulled up during late evening drives. Police said the targeted enforcement, especially between 6pm and midnight, proved critical in cutting down both fatalities and serious injuries on city roads. According to data compiled by the traffic branch's accident cell, fatal accidents dropped from 40 in July 2024 to 15 this year, while the number of serious injuries reduced from 13 to just 2 — an 84.6% reduction. Senior officials said the most significant factor behind the fall was the crackdown on drunken driving, along with enforcement of helmet rules and action against wrong-side driving. "Checkpoints were set up across the city to monitor violations, especially in high-risk areas and during peak accident hours," said CP Singal. "Heavy fines and legal action were taken against offenders. But Operation U-Turn is not just about enforcement — it's about building a culture of road safety. The encouraging results also reflect citizen cooperation." Jt CP Navinchandra Reddy, who is also overseeing the drive, added that "data-driven policing and focused enforcement" were the keys to success. "Community engagement also played a big role," he said. To complement enforcement, the police also conducted public awareness campaigns, including outreach programmes to educate citizens on the importance of wearing helmets, obeying signals, and not driving under the influence. Launched as a response to the city's growing accident toll, the drive is now being seen as a model for targeted road safety campaigns. Nagpur Police said it plans to sustain the momentum by expanding the operation and introducing AI-based traffic monitoring systems to improve surveillance and compliance. "Dangerous driving behaviours won't be tolerated, and we'll continue to take strict action," said DCP Matani, adding that efforts would continue until road deaths are significantly reduced.

Amidst action on nightclubs, new one opens with ‘fair-skinned' dancers
Nagpur: The police department would be verifying allegation against a new nightclub, which was inaugurated in the heart of the city on Wednesday, after a viral video showed a couple of "fair-skinned" dancers gyrating to entertain the guests on the inaugural day. The nightclub incident happened when police had begun a crack down on nightlife in the city. While city police were closing rooftop restros, pubs, and taking action against lounges and nightclubs in Bajaj Nagar, Rana Pratap Nagar, Sonegaon, Dharampeth for breaching timing norms, a new one was being inaugurated with pomp and show. Sources said Bajaj Nagar police rushed to the nightclub after being alerted about alleged violations and noise. It's still not clear what action was initiated by the Bajajnagar police, but the complainant's objection was taken on record. Sources said the opening ceremony continued even after the objection, as cops found nothing unusual at the venue. The invitees for the ceremony included city's crème de la crème, including top officials. While sources claimed the dancers could be foreign nationals, zonal DCP Rishikesh Reddy said he would verify the allegations about the nightclub overstepping the the Foreigners Act, which makes permission mandatory for performances by overseas artists. "We informed the management of the new nightlife establishment to avoid rooftop celebrations, which are prohibited. If they have violated any norms, legal actions would follow," said Reddy, who this week suspended operations of three Saoji food joints for allowing liquor on their premises. Sources said the city police, following instructions from CP Ravinder Singal, are strictly enforcing the rule for closing pubs, lounges and such places within the permissible limit of 1.30am. The crime branch has started a crack down on illegal hookah parlours and such joints in west Nagpur.
