The Scottish city that was named 'nicest place for summer visit' with family
With May already halfway over, summer is so close we can practically taste it. That also means that we are about to enter the peak of the holiday season.
If you aren't planning to fly off to Europe, there are a lot of options for a fun break closer to home. Summer is a great time to plan an exciting Scottish city break, especially if you are travelling with the whole family.
Earlier this year, a list of the top 10 "nicest places in Scotland to visit in summer season with family" was revealed by Executive Cabs Glasgow. Coming in at number one on the list was Edinburgh.
The Scottish capital is famous all around the world for its incredible history and culture, as well as its amazing architecture. Tourists love exploring its cobbled streets and many hidden closes.
Edinburgh was praised by Executive Cabs Glasgow for its unique blend of heritage and fun. They singled out iconic attractions such as Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile.
Another must-visit place in Edinburgh according to the experts is Arthur's Seat. The extinct volcano that dominates the city's skyline is the ideal place for a hike with the family on a sunny day.
Meanwhile, there is unsurprisingly lots to get up for children in Edinburgh too. Many of the city's top attractions are specifically catered towards offering a fun day out for all ages.
One of the best visitor attractions in Edinburgh that kids will love is Camera Obscura and World of Illusions. The attraction is home to more than 100 interactive exhibits, such as the Vortex Tunnel, Mirror Maze, and Ames room.
Elsewhere, the National Museum of Scotland is free to enter and offers so much to see and do that it can be overwhelming. With thousands of rare objects, as well as lots of interactive exhibits, the museum will teach visitors about history, the natural world, fashion, and much more.
Another must-visit destination in Edinburgh, especially for those with an interest in history, is The Real Mary King's Close. The spooky attraction details more than 400 years of history, with colourful characters bringing the city's grisly past to life.
With summer on the way, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival will also once again soon be returning. Held each year over August, the biggest performance arts festival in the world hosts thousands of different shows across comedy, music, dance, and more.
Edinburgh is also one of the best cities for food in the UK, with a seemingly endless list of acclaimed eateries. Among the city's Michelin-starred restaurants are LYLA, Timberyard, Heron, and Martin Wishart.
Executive Cabs Glasgow commented: "Edinburgh is one of the best summer destinations in Scotland, where tradition sits alongside fun. The famous Edinburgh Castle gives guests fantastic views of the city, while Arthur's Seat is an easy family hike with beautiful views.
"Edinburgh is also the home of the world's largest arts festival, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, which takes place in the summer and provides children with street theatre, puppetry, and interactive exhibits.
"The Royal Mile is a must-see, where performers known as buskers, and historic sites give the area a unique character."

New insider guide to booking university rooms for the Edinburgh Festival launches online
The world-famous Edinburgh Festival and Fringe returns on 1 August but organisers have warned that soaring accommodation costs and holiday let restrictions could mean the event is facing 'grim' obstacles. The good news is that a new online guide has just launched revealing how festival-goers and performers can easily book bargain university rooms for August. Learn More Sorry, there seem to be some issues. Please try again later. Submitting... Many thousands of people are planning to visit Edinburgh's world-famous Festival and Fringe next month. However, available accommodation in August is reaching a crisis point, according to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society, which is one of the events' organisers. The Society told the Scottish Parliament last year that the cost of accommodation faced by performers and companies trying to book in August has soared by up to 300% in the space of six years. It claims booking a one-bedroom flat in the capital for the entire Fringe can cost up to £9,000. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The Society's fears are well-founded, says Johanna Jernberg, a leading tourism expert from 'Last year, ticket sales rose to over 2.61 million and event organisers claimed there was a shortfall of 25,000 guest nights to meet demand. The demand for accommodation in Scotland's capital rises every year. In 2024, Edinburgh had the third-highest number of guest nights in short-term holiday lets (such as Airbnbs) in the entire UK, at 3,016,130. Westfield university accommodation offers high-spec ensuite rooms as well as entire flats. A handy base to stay for the Edinburgh Fringe this August. 'Critically, it's during the Festival and Fringe events in August that the accommodation crisis peaks. Of the holiday-let guest nights recorded in Edinburgh last year 411,900 (13.6%) were in August. Fortunately, there is one solution to this soaring seasonal demand that is an amazing fit. Thousands of rooms actually stand empty in Edinburgh during August, just when they are most-needed. That's because many of the thousands of students who study in Edinburgh are home for the holidays in August. 'Now a new online guide has been launched by detailing how to find and book university accommodation in Edinburgh this August, and what are the best locations for festival visitors. 'The guide reveals: 'As every local and seasoned festival goer knows, cheap hotels in Edinburgh in August are about as mythical as the Loch Ness Monster – so we'll show you how to sneakily snag some student accommodation and bag yourself a bonnie bed for the night without forking out on astronomical accommodation.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'To stay as close to the centre as possible for the Festival and Fringe events, the guide lists a number of student residences across the city. Westfield: 'Tucked away in the tranquil Gorgie area, this accommodation was built in 2022 and offers high-spec ensuite rooms as well as entire flats – perfect if you head to Edinburgh with a group of mates. With free Wi-Fi throughout, it's easy to plan your next show or post pics to social media and the shared kitchen facilities give you the flexibility to make your own snacks in-between shows. Rooms are available from just £99 per night this August. Sugarhouse Close: Unite Students: 'Right in the thick of the action, Sugarhouse Close is hard to beat. Tucked just off the historic Royal Mile and a short stroll from Waverley Station, it's perfect for dashing between Fringe venues, catching late-night comedy or soaking up the festival buzz. A modern student residence, it has private ensuite rooms with access to shared kitchens or self-contained studios for those who like a little more space. Classic studio apartments are available from £219.24 per night this August. The University of Edinburgh: 'What could be better than waking up at Baird House at Pollock Halls, with the dramatic Arthur's Seat as your backdrop? With a large capacity of 2,000 single bedrooms on site, all with comfy beds, shared bathrooms, and a hearty Scottish breakfast included, this is a great go-to for last-minute Festival accommodation. An onsite shop, cash machine and free parking as well as Wi-Fi, communal areas and a 24-hour reception make this a perfect home from home in the summer months. Rooms are available from just £90 a night this August. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad

The campaign, which was launched earlier this year, is designed to help holiday makers and families get the most out of their self-catering accommodation with easy to cook nutritious, delicious recipes. Dean, who owns six restaurants in Scotland and was a finalist on the hit BBC One cooking show Professional MasterChef, spent the day cooking several dishes in one of the 2-bedroom signature lodges overlooking Loch Tay. In just 40-minutes, Dean had cooked a delicious dish of Harissa lamb, minted lamb potatoes and a Greek salad, using the lodges well equipped kitchen. These fine dining kits are the perfect combination of culinary artistry, passion and practicality and super quick and easy to cook in a holiday lodge or caravan. Dean demonstrated how easy it is to prepare a delicious 3-course meal using his 'Best of Land and Sea' meal kit featuring Dressed Crab with Spicy Mango Slaw & Asian Dressing, Native Dressed Lobster, Seaweed Potatoes & Mirin Butter Sauce and a Dry-Aged Beef Sirloin, XO Sauce, Seared Seasonal Greens & Smoked Mayonnaise. For his third dish Dean showed off the newest edition to his Haar at Home meal kits with the luxurious Seafood Boil Kit. The kit includes everything you need to create your very own seafood boil experience whilst on holiday: dive into mussels, fresh prawns and brown crab; succulent smoked sausage; roasted veggies; potatoes simmered away in the broth that's absolutely bursting full of flavour; and super rich and delicious spiced butter for dipping! It even includes a paper tablecloth, aprons, bibs and seafood tools so that you can enjoy the authentic seafood boil experience. Dean's day at Loch Tay Highland Lodges was captured on camera and will be released as a series of cooking tutorials and top cooking tips on Largo Leisure's social media channels as part of the 'Carry on Cooking' campaign. Dean commented: 'I wanted to be part of this campaign to show just how quickly and easy it is to prepare really great meals in a self-catering holiday home. It doesn't have to be time consuming or expensive, you just need a few ingredients you can get at pretty much any supermarket to create delicious meals all the family can enjoy. I have given some tips on what you can cook when glamping if you only have access to a firepit or BBQ, what you can create on a 2-ring hob without an oven and my favourite quick dessert Banoffee Pie. 'This was my first time at Loch Tay Highland Lodges and the views from the lodge were absolutely stunning. It certainly provided the perfect backdrop for cooking and enjoying some fantastic Scottish seafood. Out meal kits are designed to be quick and easy to prepare so perfect for when you are on holiday but want a bit of a treat. I hope the tutorials and top tips will provide people going on self-catering holidays with some culinary inspiration.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Marketing Director Rachel Mabbs added: 'We launched the campaign to try and shine on a light on why self-catering holiday's don't have to mean spending a lot of money on takeaways or settling for convenience food. We are so grateful to Dean for giving up his time to help make our guests feel more confident in preparing meals during their stays without spending a fortune on shopping and hours debating what to cook. I can't wait to see the cooking tutorials on our socials and hope to pick up a few tips myself.' Largo Leisure have worked with a number of influencers as part of the campaign and will be creating and releasing a digital recipe book exclusively for guests later this year. The Scottish lighthouse 'two minutes' from scenic beach you can rent for holiday
The property is available to book through Airbnb. A Scottish lighthouse that has been described as "really cute" can currently be booked for a holiday. The accommodation is a short walk from a scenic beach. Lighthouse Point is comprised of a former lighthouse keeper's cottage located at Toward Point in Argyll. It benefits from a beachfront with shared bay access, and is less than two minutes on foot from the water. Currently, the accommodation is available to rent out for a staycation through Airbnb. Each night at the cottage is priced at £125, with a minimum stay of two nights. Lighthouse Point is set out over one level, including a bedroom with a king-size bed and a shower room. There is also a lounge, a fully equipped kitchen, and a sun room. Lighthouse Point benefits from far-reaching vistas on its upper balcony. It offers views down the Clyde past Bute and towards Arran. Outside, there is a "good size garden", including garden furniture for al fresco dining. The rear garden by the sun room is fully enclosed, making it perfect for dogs to run around in. Approximately three miles from the property is the village of Innellan, which features a shop and a pub and hotel. Meanwhile, slightly further out is the town of Dunoon that offers a wide range of amenities. According to the Airbnb listing, there is a wealth of facilities and activities on offer nearby. These include fishing, bird watching, boat trips, cycling, and sailing. The property is classed as a 'guest favourite' on Airbnb, meaning it is in the top 10 per cent of eligible listings based on ratings, reviews, and reliability. The accommodation has a rating of 4.93 out of five on the site based on 239 reviews. One holidaymaker shared: "Had a wonderful stay at the cottage in Toward. The area is just outstanding, peaceful and dramatic. Spotted a dolphin or porpoise from the sunroom. "The cottage is really cute, had everything we needed and outstanding views. The bed is comfortable; this is one of the most relaxing holidays we have had and will be back sometime." A second Airbnb user posted: "Our second time staying here and we loved it again. Such a beautiful location, gorgeous wee cottage with everything you need for a short or longer stay. "Beach walks on the doorstep and short drive (or local bus stops at bottom of the driveway) into local villages and Dunoon town centre." Although the accommodation has not received any negative reviews from visitors, certain holidaymakers may prefer to stay somewhere with easier access to more amenities. In that case, there are hotels in Innellan and Dunoon that can be booked. The Osborne is a pub and bed and breakfast in Innellan that overlooks the River Clyde. Elsewhere, the SGE Argyll Hotel in Dunoon features 33 guest rooms and a restaurant.
