BJD corporator arrested in rape case, suspended from party
Jena, a prominent BJD leader was booked under the BNS sections 64(2) (rape), 89 (committing miscarriage without woman's permission), 296 (obscene act), and 352 (criminal intimidation), besides section 6 of the POCSO Act, at the Laxmisagar police station, where the survivor lodged a complaint on Wednesday, the police said.
As Jena was not available at his house and possible locations in the city and remained incommunicado, the police formed a special squad and launched a manhunt for the fugitive BJD leader.
"Finally, he was located at a village under Berhampur police station limit in Nilgiri area in Balasore and apprehended by the special squad," a police officer said, adding that he was being brought to Bhubaneswar.
A senior officer said that Jena was staying in a village in Nilgiri area, which is close to the forest, with the aim of escaping to the jungle if there was any police raid to apprehend him. However, he could not because the operation was carried out very secretly, the officer added.
Immediately after his arrest, the BJD issued an office order stating that: "Amaresh Jena, Corporator, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, is hereby suspended from Biju Janata Dal with immediate effect."
BJD Bhubaneswar president Ashok Panda told reporters on Sunday that Jena's suspension will not affect the party. "No one is indispensable for BJD. It is party first. I reiterate that law will take its own course."
He said the BJD has acted immediately as soon as Jena was arrested by police. "The BJD stands by its pro-women ideology. Jena's arrest will in no way damage BJD. It is a huge party with thousands of workers and leaders. He is an accused and will go through the legal process," Mr. Panda said.
On Saturday night, the police arrested five aides of Jena on charges of harbouring him. The police said the five persons provided conveyance and assisted Amresh Jena in evading arrest.
The five arrested individuals hail from various parts of Khurda and Jagatsinghpur districts, and were forwarded to judicial custody after their bail pleas were rejected, they said.
A 19-year-old woman in a written complaint at Laxmisagar police station accused the BJD corporator of rape, foeticide, cheating, and criminal intimidation. Jena, while absconding, told a section of the media that he was "innocent" and "framed" by the ruling BJP.
In her complaint, the survivor alleged that the corporator sexually exploited her with the promise of marriage when she was 17 years old. She claims that Jena took her to Puri, engaged in physical relations, and in February 2024, when she was still a minor, forced her to abort a two-month pregnancy by administering pills.
The survivor also alleged that she was threatened and directed not to reveal the matter to anyone.
Police have recorded the statement of the survivor, and she also underwent a medical test.
Bhubaneswar police had this week arrested the state president of NSUI, Udit Pradhan, for allegedly raping an engineering student. He has also been suspended from the party.

7 of snatching gang held in Rohini, stolen phones recovered
New Delhi: A gang of snatchers operating in Delhi's Rohini and adjoining areas was busted with the arrest of seven people, including receivers and mediators of stolen items, police said on Monday. The police added that 26 robbed mobile phones, a stolen motorcycle used in crimes, a dismantled two-wheeler, and a laptop used to reprogram devices were recovered from the accused. The breakthrough came following a snatching incident reported on July 10 nearC Bakery in Rohini Sector 6-7, where a woman was targeted by two motorcycle-borne assailants. A case under relevant sections of the BNS was registered, an official said. Two suspects including Pawan alias Lalla (25) and Abhitesh Gautam alias Cheedi (18), both from Karawal Nagar, were arrested. Subsequently, based on their interrogation, a mediator, Hemant alias Hemu (18), was also held, he said. The gang sourced stolen bikes through Vitul (24), who is previously involved in theft cases, and committed snatchings with Diwakar Sharma alias Paltu (25), previously booked for robbery and attempt to murder, he added. The stolen phones were funneled through Hemant to a receiver network. Those subsequently arrested were Atul (19), Vitul's brother, and Babar Malik (34), a phone shop owner in Baghpat, UP. Four iPhones and a laptop used to tamper with IMEIs were recovered. Seventeen cases have been worked out so far. Further probe is underway, the police said.

After arrest of nuns, political row in Chhattisgarh
RAIPUR: A case of alleged human trafficking and religious conversion got political colour on Monday following the arrest of three, including two Catholic nuns—Sisters Preeti Marry and Vandana Francis—from Kerala in Chhattisgarh's Durg. The trio, taken into custody by Durg Government Railway Police (GRP) on Saturday for human trafficking and coerced religious conversion, were remanded to judicial custody by the JMFC court till August 8. They were booked under BNS Section 143 (trafficking). Citing the incident as a serious concern for women's safety, Chhattisgarh chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Monday wrote on X, 'Three daughters of Narayanpur were promised nursing training and later jobs. It's an attempt to convert people through human trafficking by allurement. Investigation is going on in this matter. The case is sub-judice and the law will take its own course.'

Ludhiana: Husband among 5 booked after UP woman's ‘mysterious death'
A murder case has been registered in Ludhiana against a man and four members of his family following a zero FIR lodged in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh. The case, now transferred to the Meharban police station, pertains to the death of 29-year-old Pratibha Yadav, who was found hanging in her home in Mahavir Enclave, Noorwala Road, on March 18. Pardeep Tiwari tragically died after being brutally thrashed by two friends and then abandoned on the roadside in Ludhiana's Bapu Market in Daba on Sunday night. (HT Photo) Though the initial autopsy report declared the cause of death as suicide, the woman's family alleged foul play and approached police in Azamgarh, their native district, where a murder FIR was registered. That FIR has now been transferred to Ludhiana police for action. On the basis of the zero FIR, the city police have booked Pratibha's husband Sarvesh Yadav, his mother Chandrawati, father Achhe Lal, sister Harshita, and brother Rakesh Yadav under sections 103(1) (murder) and 61(1) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The complaint was filed by Pratibha's brother, Vipan Kumar Yadav of Azamgarh. He alleged that his sister had been harassed by her husband and in-laws, especially after discovering that her husband was in a relationship with another woman. According to Vipan, Pratibha had called him on March 18, just hours before her death, and confided that her in-laws and husband had threatened to kill her. 'Later that same day, we received news that Pratibha had died under suspicious circumstances,' Vipan stated in his complaint. 'We strongly believe she was murdered.' However, police officials in Ludhiana maintain that the original investigation did not suggest murder. 'When Pratibha was found hanging at home, she was alone at the time. The autopsy confirmed it was suicide, and her brother's initial statement was recorded under Section 194 of BNSS,' said ASI Radhey Sham, investigating officer at Meharban police station. 'After the family returned to Azamgarh, they lodged a fresh complaint and got a murder case registered. Based on that zero FIR, we have formally registered a case in Ludhiana. Factory worker beaten to death by friends, one held A man tragically died after being brutally thrashed by two friends and then abandoned on the roadside in Ludhiana's Bapu Market in Daba on Sunday night. The victim, identified as Pardeep Tiwari, 32, of Mahadev Colony in Sahnewal, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Daba Police have since arrested one of the accused, Rinku Dubey, while the other, known as Behra, remains at large. The police officials confirmed that they have arrested one of the accused Rinku Dubey, while another accused Behra is yet to be arrested. Assistant commissioner of police (ACP, Industrial Area- B) Satvinder Singh Virk stated that two bike borne men dumped an injured man on the roadside in Bapu Market in Daba before fleeing. The police reached on being informed and initiated an investigation. The injured man rushed to hospital, where he succumbed to the injuries. He left the house at 5.30 PM stating that he is going to eat 'Golgappe' from a nearby market and he will return in a few minutes. When he did not return till night they started a search for him but to no avail. On Monday morning he came to know that his son had died,'said the ACP. 'We scanned the CCTVs installed in the market in which the accused were captured dumping injured Pardeep Tiwari on the roadside. The police identified the accused from CCTVs footage and arrested Rinku Dubey. The accused told police that Pardeep Tiwari came to their house in Sundar Nagar on Sunday evening, where they indulged in a spat with him over some issue. Dubey confessed that he along with Behra thrashed Pardeep Tiwari brutally. When he lost his consciousness they dumped him in the market,'said the ACP. Further the ACP added that the accused stated that they were aware that if he took Pardeep Tiwari to Hospital, he would reveal their names to police. To avoid police they dumped him on the road to die. A case under section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of BNS has been lodged against the accused at Daba Police Station. Tiwari was survived by parents, wife and a two-year-old daughter. His wife is living separately following a matrimonial issue.
