Selangor's rice bowl: Sabak Bernam leads in crop, cash and land; chief statistician says youth needed to sustain sector

Malay Mail4 days ago
KLANG, July 29 — Sabak Bernam has been confirmed as Selangor's primary rice-producing district, based on findings from the 2024 Selangor Agricultural Census Interim Report.
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said rice remains the main crop in the district, with a planted area covering 24,098 hectares.
'The value of rice sales recorded in Sabak Bernam alone reached RM220.1 million, representing more than 60 per cent of Selangor's total rice sales,' he said in a statement during the launch of the state-level interim report here today.
Mohd Uzir said Sabak Bernam also posted the highest number of agricultural holdings in Selangor, with 9,296 holdings, comprising 9,197 individual and 99 organisational, out of 37,117 recorded statewide.
'It also led in planted and harvested areas at 44,123 and 43,287 hectares respectively, contributing to overall agricultural sales worth RM1.64 billion,' he added.
Statewide data showed 95.6 per cent of agricultural holdings were owned by individuals, mostly aged 46 and above (77.3 per cent), with nearly half aged 60 and above, he noted.
'This indicates the sector is still dominated by experienced farmers, underscoring the value of tradition and expertise in sustaining agriculture. However, one key challenge is drawing more youth into the sector to ensure its renewal and competitiveness,' he said.
Mohd Uzir said the livestock subsector recorded 2,198 holdings with sales worth RM3.16 billion, while capture fisheries contributed RM1.39 billion from 106,920 tonnes. Aquaculture produced 16,900 tonnes and 372 million fish (ornamental and fry), valued at RM196.4 million.
The interim report was launched by Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, with state Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim also present. — Bernama

Kuching to have longest riverfront and new landmark garden

Kuching North mayor Hilmy Othman said a 16-hectare floral garden will be developed near Jalan Astana and would be a major public attraction and eco-tourism destination. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The Kuching Waterfront is to be extended and will be Malaysia's longest river waterfront under a development plan by the Kuching North City Hall which includes a 16-hectare floral garden, inspired by Singapore's Gardens by the Bay. Kucing North mayor Hilmy Othman said the extended Kuching Waterfront will run from Sungai Bintangor to the Satok Bridge, the Borneo Post reported. The project is part of plans by the city hall (DBKU) to transform Kuching into a low-carbon, globally competitive capital city under Sarawak's development strategy. The 16-hectare floral garden, one of the headline projects, is to be developed near Jalan Astana. Hilmy said the floral garden would serve as a major public attraction and eco-tourism destination, drawing both tourists and plant lovers. Complementing this is the upcoming Bamboo Gallery, a 25-hectare green architecture and sustainability education centre near Jalan Crookshank. 'These projects aim to preserve the site's natural greenery and heritage,' Hilmy said. He said DBKU would continue investing in infrastructure that blends sustainability with public benefit. The city has already installed more than 2,000 smart streetlights to cut energy use and reduce maintenance costs, along with over 300 CCTVs to boost security. A smart parking system, set to replace the coupon model, is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2025 and integrated into the iDBKU digital platform.

Sarawak to be first state with diversity unit

Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg at the launch of a women's day celebration in Kuching today. (Ukas pic) PETALING JAYA : Sarawak will be the first state in the country to set up a diversity, equality and inclusivity unit, premier Abang Johari Openg revealed. The unit, known as D2EI for diversity, equality, equity and inclusivity, will be set up in the state department of women and family development, The Borneo Post reported. Abang Johari said the D2EI principles are in line with his administration's post-Covid-19 development strategy, which emphasises inclusivity. He also believes that these values could help raise household income and reduce poverty across the state over time. For now, Abang Johari said the state government hopes to boost the involvement of women in high-growth sectors, by providing support in the form of economic grants, digital entrepreneurship training and startup assistance. 'We have asked the banks to assist us in investment-related efforts, including lifelong learning opportunities. This will certainly empower women more comprehensively in line with the D2EI values,' he was quoted as saying. This is not the first time Sarawak has introduced progressive policies. In 2023, it became the first state in Malaysia to have an ombudsman law. DEI policies, whose origins date back to the US civil rights movement, made headlines after US president Donald Trump issued an executive order after taking office in January directing government agency chiefs to dismantle DEI policies at federal agencies, federal contractors and in the private sector.

Selangor to step up water conservation drive through regular sessions

SEKINCHAN: The Selangor government has proposed that Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) hold regular briefing sessions with local authorities, traders, and community leaders to explain recent water tariff adjustments and promote public awareness of responsible water use. State Local Government and Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim said such sessions could be held several times a year and extended to schools and public campaigns, in collaboration with the Information Department, to foster long-term conservation habits. He said water-related topics should also be embedded in environmental campaigns, as water wastage affects the sustainability of natural resources. "This is not just a Selangor issue. "Span (National Water Services Commission) is implementing similar tariff adjustments across the country," he said after receiving the Selangor-level Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang 2025 convoy at Pantai Redang here today. The Selangor government recently confirmed that domestic users consuming up to 20 cubic metres monthly will continue paying RM0.65 per cubic metre, with the minimum RM6.50 monthly charge unchanged. The rates had already been revised in February 2024. However, higher water usage will be subject to new rates under a revised tariff structure that takes effect on Sept 1 for consumers in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, all of which are served by Air Selangor. Meanwhile, Ng also urged the Housing and Local Government Ministry to amend existing laws to stop foreigners from operating businesses through proxies by using the names of local spouses or associates to register licenses. He said such practices allow foreign-run premises to appear legal during enforcement checks, and stronger legal provisions are needed to empower local councils to act against these disguised business arrangements. "We do not allow any foreign individuals to operate businesses in any form. Locals must come first in our economic sectors." On July 28, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming also said local councils are prohibited from issuing licenses to foreigners for hawking, retail, food outlets, or any other trade activities, in accordance with existing by-laws. – Bernama
