Here is where the three new Electric Vehicle Recharging Hubs will be in Kerry
An allocation of almost €8 million will be provided to support grants for recharging infrastructure at the selected sites, with chargers set to be in place by the end of this year. These new sites will deliver 175 new fast and ultra-fast recharging points, at 53 locations along the national road network, making it quicker and easier for EV drivers to top up on longer journeys.
The announcement is part of a wider plan to build a reliable recharging network across the country, with the distance between recharging hubs to be 60km or less.
Minister O'Brien said: 'We're taking real, practical steps to make electric vehicles work for everyone. With more chargers, more choice, and more support, we hope even more people will feel confident making the switch to electric. These high-powered chargers are a key step in that process. We're committed to building a sustainable and cleaner transport system, and that means making it easy to charge wherever you are.'
The recharging hubs are funded through the Light Duty Vehicle (LDV) initiative operated by Zero Emission Vehicles Ireland (ZEVI), and delivered by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII). This phase of the initiative focused on over 1,200km of national single carriageway roads.
Enterprises such as petrol/service station operators, car park owners, hotels, supermarkets/retail outlets, and others with publicly accessible sites, could apply through a competitive grant process for funding. The total allocation for this aspect is €7.9 million.
The announcement marks another major milestone under Ireland's National EV Charging Network Plan, which aims to make EV recharging accessible across all parts of the country, from motorways to rural roads, and from cities to small towns.
This is part of the wider ZEVI National Road Network EV Charging Plan, which previously awarded grant funding to deliver 131 new high-power recharging points at 17 locations along the motorway/dual-carriageway network.
An additional scheme to support recharging infrastructure across another 3,000km of the national road network is also currently underway, with applications closing in June.

Planning permission granted to improve parking facilities and public transport options at Cork train station
In October 2024 Iarnród Éireann lodged a planning application to improve parking facilities and public transport set down areas at Millstreet Train Station. The application lodged with Cork County Council, requested permission to provide an additional 46 parking spaces at the station, seven of which will be EV charging stations. The works will also include the provision of ten bicycle parking spaces, a bicycle shelter and the creation of a bus set down/interchange facility. Subject to funding being allocated, it is anticipated that construction will commence in late 2025 and will be completed in mid-2026. Fianna Fáil TD for Cork North West Aindrias Moynihan welcomed the 'good' news for the train station which caters for a vast hinterland. 'It is good news for Millstreet with Cork County Council granting Irish Rail planning permission for a range of upgrade works at Millstreet Train Station. These planned works will include car parking, improved bus and cycle access for people using the station." Deputy Moynihan said Millstreet Train Station offers a great service. 'This is a big milestone in improving public transport locally. It is important to note that people still have the right to appeal this decision. Irish Rail submitted the planning application last year and their next step will be to secure funding from the National Transport Authority (NTA) to progress to construction. 'As a regular user of the local train service, I'm very conscious of the great service it offers as well as the pressure in sometimes accessing parking. Last summer I was pleased to show the Minister for Transport the site and the plans. I have continued to pursue this on behalf of locals. There is still lots of work ahead yet, but a big milestone has been reached,' he added.

44-acre Limerick holding already under offer
A tempting block of pasture is new to the market with Newcastle-West-based auctioneer Charles O'Brien, which is attracting plenty of local interest. The holding in question is at Ballagh, near the village of Ashford (about 1km away), Co Limerick. Newcastle West lies 13km to the north and Limerick City is 30km away. This is a part of the Golden Vale with a good cross-section of sectoral interests — both farming and non-farming — that would all potentially have an interest in such a piece of farmland. In addition to the land itself, there are the extra assets of a derelict house and some high-quality farm buildings and facilities. As for the land itself, there is quality to be found here, with the potential to improve it even further through more intensive farming. 'The bulk of it is good-quality land,' says Mr O'Brien. 'The land has been neglected to a certain extent over the last few years and would probably need to be upgraded.' The outbuildings include an eight-bay shed (four bays with slats and rubber mat, four bays with straw bed), passage feed at both sides and an internal crush in the shed. There is also a three-bay storage shed and holding yard. 'I would call it [the eight-bay shed] a state-of-the-art building,' says Mr O'Brien. The price guide is €500,000 (€11,400/acre). 'There's good interest in this property,' Mr O'Brien says. 'I've had a good number of enquiries about it and it's currently under offer but I'd expect it to make more.'

‘Consider different route' warning for drivers after multi-vehicle crash on busy Irish motorway amid delays on M50
IRISH road users have been warned "delays will occur" after a multi-vehicle collision on the M1/N1 this morning. Across the roads this morning debris, breakdowns and traffic are causing chaos for motorists. Advertisement The M1/N1 collision was reported just before 8.30am this morning between J5 Balbriggan and J4 Donabate headed southbound. The crash occurred seven kilometres south of the Stallmullen area, impacting Lane 2. Transport Infrastructure Ireland warned: "Delays to your journey will occur. Consider a different journey route or start time. "When approaching the collision location, drive with caution, reduce your speed and obey instructions from emergency services." Advertisement READ MORE IN MOTORS On the M50 a breakdown involving a car or motorbike has also added to delays this morning. The breakdown happened between J11 Tallaght and J12 Firhouse. The breakdown is sitting at Lane 1 and drivers are warned to approach with caution and reduce speed. Minor delays are expected as a result of the breakdown. Advertisement MOST READ ON THE IRISH SUN And in the midlands, debris on the road is impacting motorists outside the capital. Gardai and RSA measures aimed at driving crash deaths on Irish roads Debris is sitting on the M6/N6 eastbound between J7 Moate and J6 Moate, around two kilometres outside Moate. Transport bosses have warned that delays will occur for road users as a result of the obstruction. Transport Infrastructure Ireland warned: "Due to the nature of the impact of the debris, delays to your journey will occur. Advertisement "When approaching the area please drive with caution, reduce your speed." And further along the same stress debris is also causing delays. This debris is sitting in Lane 1 between J14 Ballinasloe and J13 Athlone headed eastbound. This is just three kilometres west of the Athlone area with bosses warning once again: "delays to your journey will occur." Advertisement IRISH RAIL SCHEDULE CHANGES Trains in Kildare are running 15 minutes behind this morning due to an earlier incident. Irish Rail suspended services through Kildare for a time this morning, however they have since resumed. Irish rail bosses have confirmed services will return to normal operating times throughout the day. The rail bosses have also confirmed they are extending train times in Galway due to an upcoming festival. Advertisement The Galway Arts Festival – Microscosmos Parade will take place tomorrow.
