Ex-Broncos RB offers honest assessment of potential NFL comeback
Former Denver Broncos running back Melvin Gordon, who last played for the Baltimore Ravens in 2023, did not sound very optimistic about a potential comeback during an interview on FanDuel TV's Up & Adams show two weeks ago.
"It's just... you know, I went the whole year last year without playing and, just being out a whole year -- it's not easy to just go back in there and just ... you know what I mean?" Gordon said when asked by Kay Adams about a potential return to the NFL. "You've been doing something for 20 years and then to take a year off, that's a long time. So it's just kind of up in the air with everything. Right now, I'm just kind of comfortable golfing and kind of spending extra time with the family and friends."
That sounds like the answer from a player who has essentially accepted that his career might be over. Adams then asked if Gordon wants to play again.
"I mean, I've been doing it my whole life, like I said, so it's like, yeah, you do, but you kind of understand, you know, I understand my position," Gordon explained. "And as a running back, being out a year and being 32, it's just not that easy. They like younger backs -- they're cheaper, they come in -- so, you know, you can't really fight that. It's not a position like a receiver where you can come in and kind of steal some years -- our position kind of don't work like that."
After spending the first five years of his career with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers, Gordon spent 2020-2022 with the Broncos, rushing for 2,222 yards and 19 touchdowns in 41 games. Gordon was cut by Denver following his fifth fumble of the 2022 season (and his 12th fumble overall with the Broncos). He then finished out the season on the practice squad of the Kansas City Chiefs. KC went on to win the Super Bowl, but Gordon did not play any snaps in the regular season or postseason with the Chiefs.
After that, Gordon rushed 26 times for 81 yards and one touchdown in four games with the Ravens in 2023 (he also had one fumble). Gordon seems to sense that a comeback bid isn't practical. If his career has come to an end, the running back is hanging up his cleats as a two-time Pro Bowler with 9,056 yards from scrimmage and 70 career touchdowns on his resume.

Bills WR Shavers carted off with ankle injury; LB Bernard, WR Samuel sidelined with hamstring issues
PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo Bills backup receiver Tyrell Shavers was carted off the field at training camp after hurting his right ankle on what proved to be the final play of practice Sunday. Shavers made a catch in the end zone and fell awkwardly while attempting to protect the ball from rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston. Shavers was on the ground for several minutes while being tended to by the training staff, leading to coach Sean McDermott ending practice a few minutes earlier than scheduled. The 25-year-old Shavers signed with Buffalo as an undrafted rookie free agent two years ago, and appeared in three games with the Bills last season. Also, starting linebacker Terrel Bernard and starting receiver Curtis Samuel did not practice Sunday with both dealing with hamstring injuries. The team had no update on the severity of the injuries, with McDermott scheduled to address reporters on Monday. ___ AP NFL: The Associated Press

49ers activate Ricky Pearsall from PUP list and Brock Purdy returns to practice
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers activated second-year receiver Ricky Pearsall from the physically unable to perform list and he practiced for the first time this summer. Niners quarterback Brock Purdy was also back at practice Sunday after missing a session on Friday for personal reasons. Pearsall had been out since injuring his hamstring during the offseason program. The Niners are counting on a big season from the 2024 first-round pick after trading away Deebo Samuel and with Brandon Aiyuk expected to miss the start of the season recovering from knee surgery. Pearsall had a difficult rookie season, missing almost all of camp with injuries to his hamstring and shoulder and then sitting out the first half of the season after being shot in a robbery attempt in San Francisco. Pearsall returned in Week 7 and finished the season with 31 catches for 400 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games. Pearsall had a strong finish to the season with 14 catches for 210 yards and two touchdowns in the final two games. ___ AP NFL:

Right tackle Jawaan Taylor returns to practice as Chiefs put pads on for first time in training camp
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs right tackle Jawaan Taylor made his training camp debut after missing their first four practices because of a knee injury, and he was right in the mix with the starters Sunday as they put on pads for the first time. Backup tight end Tre Watson, who also had been out with a groin injury, passed his physical and joined Taylor on the field. Taylor has started all 33 regular-season games he has played for Kansas City over the past two seasons. But his blocking metrics coupled with a propensity for penalties mean his job is far from secure. The Chiefs signed backup 49ers tackle Jaylon Moore to a two-year, $30 million deal and used their first-round draft pick on Ohio State standout Josh Simmons. After the first week of camp, Simmons appears to have the inside track on the left tackle job, which was a problem position for the Chiefs all of last season. So when Taylor returned, it was in a rotation with Moore for first-team snaps on Sunday. 'We're getting back in the swing. He hasn't done anything," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said of Taylor, who showed up on the injury report with knee trouble much of last season and had offseason surgery. 'But all three are kind of competing there.' Reid said he was pleased with the way Simmons looked in his first padded practice. There was some question about whether he would even be ready for camp after tearing his patellar tendon in a game with the Buckeyes last season. 'He did some good things. I wasn't focusing on him the whole time, but I thought he did some good things,' Reid said. 'He's a work in progress. He has to keep working. Young guy.' Meanwhile, Reid said cornerback Kristian Fulton had a procedure to 'clean out' his knee in the spring, which is why he remains on the physically unable to perform list. The Chiefs gave him a two-year, $20 million deal in March. Rookie tight end Jake Briningstool also did not practice Sunday because of a hamstring injury. ___ AP NFL:
