Unai Emery makes Ollie Watkins claim amid Man Utd transfer speculation
United are plotting a move for Watkins after missing out on top target Viktor Gyokeres and have placed the Villa star on their two-man striker shortlist along with RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko.
Watkins netted 17 times in all competitions last term, helping Villa to secure European football for a third year running and becoming the club's all-time leading Premier League goalscorer in the process.
However, Watkins was less than impressed after he was left out of both legs of Villa's Champions League quarter-final defeat to PSG and there have been reports that the England international could be open to a fresh challenge away from Villa Park.
United sensed an opportunity and made a first approach for Watkins to gauge the 27-year-old's potential availability earlier this month after conceding defeat in the race for Gyokeres.

But just as they had done when Arsenal came calling in January, Villa made it clear that they would not be entertaining offers for Watkins and encouraged United to look elsewhere.
Watkins will have been looking to block out the outside noise over his future as Villa continued their pre-season tour of the United States with a 2-1 victory over St Louis City SC on Thursday.
Having found the the net just four days earlier in a 2-2 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt, Watkins was once again on the scoresheet with what proved to be the decisive goal after Morgan Rogers' earlier effort at Energizer Park.
Asked if he was pleased to see Watkins amongst the goals ahead of the new season, Emery told reporters: 'Yes, it's important for us.
'Playing even one time, second time… not different shapes, but different players and mixing players.
'Morgan [Rogers] scored in the first half and Watkins scored in the second half. For them, it is important.
'But as well, I want to have more players scoring goals. Hopefully we can do that in the next match against Nashville.
The idea now is more than the result, more than our shape. With the players we have to try to get our best performance.
'We try to play, try to get minutes, get confidence, get fit, sharing players, [working out], how the combination with the players can feel good.
'We are playing now with Watkins and with Emiliano [Buendia]. We played with Malen as well as a striker.
'Of course, I am now practising as well and trying to get myself a lot of information from them.'
Emery has been enjoying his time across the pond and is feeling 'positive' with the progress that his squad have made on tour.
The Villa head coach added: 'We're happy to be here and we're happy to do our pre-season here in the United States, playing against St Louis City.
'Our experiences playing here, against MLS teams, are always positive and, here as well, the opponent played well.
'I think the environment was good, the fans enjoyed the match. Everything is positive.'
When asked about United's search for a striker following the side's pre-season clash with Bournemouth, Ruben Amorim opted, instead, to praise Rasmus Hojlund, who scored in the 4-1 win.
Asked whether he had any updates regarding a possible deal for Sesko, Amorim bluntly replied: 'No.
'The important thing is Rasmus is scoring goals and connecting really well with the team.'
'He's improving. So again, I don't know what is going to happen until the market is closed.
'I'm really happy with what is happening with the players we had last season, they are improving.
'We look like a different team today let's continue with that. I'm really happy with Bryan [Mbeumo] and Matheus [Cunha].
'Even Diego [Leon] you can see he's a smart guy for a guy who came from Paraguay to the Premier League it's a really powerful player I'm really happy with these three guys.'
Pressed on whether Hojlund still had a future at United should Sesko join, he added: 'I'm really happy with Rasmus, I don't know what is going to happen until the end of the market.
'The important thing is the strikers who are here are working hard they are improving and helping the team. That is the most important thing.
'The important thing is people focus on the goals, we suffered from a lack of goals but I think not just the goals but the way he connects the play.
'Every time we kick the ball when we are pressed, the ability of him to hold the ball and connect the support is helping us a lot to play better. And we are playing better because he is playing better.'

Spurs captain Son says he is leaving the club
Aug 2 (Reuters) - Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min will bring his 10-year spell with the Premier League club to an end this summer, the 33-year-old South Korean said on Saturday. Son, who is under contract until 2026, led Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years with their win over Manchester United in the Europa League final in May, having joined the North London club from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015. While Son did not disclose his next destination, British media have linked him with a move to Major League Soccer club Los Angeles FC. "I have decided to leave the team this summer," Son said at a press conference ahead of Spurs' pre-season friendly against Newcastle United in Seoul on Sunday. "I think it was one of the most difficult decisions I've ever made in my football career. Playing football and being with one team for 10 years is something I am very proud of, but I think I gave my all to the team every single day. "I did my best on the field and off the field, and by winning the Europa League, I thought I'd done everything I could and achieved. That was probably the biggest reason (why I decided to leave the team)." Son has made 454 appearances for Spurs and scored 173 goals. He won the Premier League Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season. "I was so grateful that the team helped me a lot with this decision and respected my choice," he added. "It was my favourite place for 10 years, and it was the place where I grew a lot as a football player and a person, so I have a very grateful heart."

Son Heung-min targeting ‘fresh challenge' as he announces Tottenham departure
Tottenham captain Son Heung-min has revealed he will leave the club this summer. Son has spent the last decade at Spurs and achieved his goal of silverware in May when he helped the Premier League team to Europa League success with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United. It ended a 17-year trophy drought for the club and South Korea captain Son explained his decision to target a 'fresh challenge' during a press conference in his home country ahead of Tottenham's pre-season friendly with Newcastle on Sunday. After Spurs arrived in Seoul on Friday, Son – following a remarkable 454 appearances and 173 goals for the north London club – confirmed his desire to depart this summer, with MLS outfit Los Angeles FC leading the race for his signature, the PA news agency understands. Heung-Min Son has announced his intention to leave the Club at a press conference alongside Thomas Frank in Seoul. — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) August 2, 2025 Son told a press conference: 'Before we start, I wanted to say I have decided to leave the club this summer. 'Respectfully, the club is helping me with this decision. 'It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career, such amazing memories. It was so hard to make this decision. He continued: 'I need a new environment to push myself. I need a little bit of change – 10 years is a long time. 'I came to north London as a kid, 23-years-old, such a young age. I leave the club as a grown man, a very proud man. 'I want to say thanks to all the Spurs fans for giving me so much love. I hope the goodbye is also good timing and this is the right time to make that decision. I hope everyone can accept and respect that.' New Tottenham head coach Frank confirmed Son would start and be captain in Sunday's friendly with Newcastle at Seoul's World Cup Stadium. It could be Son's final appearance for Spurs, despite the UEFA Super Cup fixture with Paris St Germain in Udine on the horizon on August 13. Frank said: 'It's very clear that Sonny will start and lead the team out as captain. If that is the last game for Sonny, what a place to do it here in front of his home fans. It could be a beautiful ending.' Son joined Tottenham in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen and after a tricky debut campaign, he quickly became a fan favourite and subsequently a modern-day Premier League great due to his consistency and personality, clinching the golden boot award in the 2022-23 season, but he is now set to exit after 10 years in north London.

Man Utd transfer news: Benjamin Sesko sent strong message as club chief speaks out
Manchester United are keen to add RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko to the clutch of signings they've already made this summer and one Red Devil has already made his thoughts very clear Manchester United are currently in the middle of their pre-season tour of America - but that doesn't mean there's nothing going on at Old Trafford. The Red Devils are hard at work trying to add more new faces to Ruben Amorim's squad ahead of the new season. United have already rubber-stamped three summer arrivals: Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have both completed moves from both Wolves and Brentford respectively, while young defender Diego Leon has also completed a move to Manchester. But United are not finished there with more incomings and player sales expected before the transfer deadline. A striker is also on their shopping list, with RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko emerging as the club's priority transfer target. Talks regarding his arrival are ongoing. Elsewhere, outgoings are also on the agenda. Marcus Rashford has already completed a move away from the club after joining Barcelona. Take a look at all of the latest transfer rumours: Dorgu sends Sesko message Man United defender Patrick Dorgu claims he still has plenty of faith in Rasmus Hojlund despite the club chasing Benjamin Sesko. 'He's doing really well,' said Dorgu. 'He looks sharp, he looks fit and I'm very happy for Rasmus to get his goal. 'It was a difficult season for Rasmus. Not only for him, but for everyone, so I think this season is really important for him and for the team to get back to where we have to be in the league. 'We need a striker to deliver on the pitch, so that's why he was happy. We talk in training, we try to understand each other on the pitch, for me to know where he is in the box and what movements he likes. He needs confidence, everyone needs confidence and a goal always helps with that.' Juventus speak out on Sancho Juventus chief Damien Comolli has suggested that his side are still interested in Jadon Sancho - but will only make a move should one of their current widemen leave. He said: 'I think the club is very attractive; many agents and players are calling me. After all, we are Juventus, and we want to get back to winning ways. 'Securing Conceição's permanence was a clear and strong decision because he can play on both fronts. We have two of the best wingers in the world, and Nico is a great player. If someone were to leave, we will consider him [Sancho]." Sancho was in line for a move to Chelsea this summer after spending last season on loan but the Blues decided to pay a £5m penalty fee to back out of the agreement. United eye Donnarumma While the Red Devils are keen to bolster their attacking options, it also appears that they want to add to their goalkeeping ranks. As per Sky Sports, United are interested in PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Italian has entered the final year of his contract at the Parc des Princes, with the French side having signed Lucas Chevalier from Lille as a potential replacement. But Donnarumma could yet stay. A further year with PSG has not been ruled out and the Italian is in no rush to make a decision on his future.
