Ziegenbalg memorial yet to materialise despite announcement in State Assembly
Over a year after the Tamil Nadu government announced in the Legislative Assembly the construction of a memorial hall and statue for Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg, the German missionary and Tamil scholar, works have not been picked up yet.
Ziegenbalg, who arrived in Tharangambadi on July 9, 1706, after a 222-day sea voyage, is credited with establishing the first Tamil printing press in India in 1712. He also founded Asia's first Protestant church, the New Jerusalem Church, and published Tamil grammars and dictionaries by transferring palm leaf manuscripts to paper. Widely acknowledged as a social reformer, he fought for education rights of women and marginalised communities, and set up schools, vocational training centres, and printing facilities.
In the 2024 budget session, Chief Minister M. K. Stalin announced plans to build a memorial hall with a statue to honour Ziegenbalg's contributions and to be implemented by the Tamil Development and Information Department. The move followed years of demand by political parties and scholars.
'Officials have identified land outside Tharangambadi, in Poraiyar, which makes no sense. The memorial must be built inside the Danish Fort area where Ziegenbalg lived and worked,' said S. Johnson, a social activist.
Officials from the Tamil Development Department confirmed that land near Tharangambadi police station, adjacent to the tahsildar office, had been earmarked for the purpose. A Government Order sanctioning funds was expected shortly, and construction was likely to begin within a month.

Ban to 7-year jail: Fears of abuse over Karnataka Bill to curb fake news
Defining fake news in sweeping terms to include content that is deemed 'anti-feminism' and 'disrespect of Sanatan symbols'; prescribing a seven-year jail term for social media users held guilty of posting 'fake news' as decided by a committee headed by the state Information & Broadcasting Minister; setting up special courts to deal with cases under the law — Karnataka's Bill to curb fake news raises several questions of free speech and state overreach. The Karnataka Mis-Information and Fake News (Prohibition) Bill, 2025, in the name of prohibiting misinformation and fake news, empowers a committee of lawmakers to identify and label content on social media as 'fake news.' It is the first of its kind state legislation to deal with digital platforms and free speech. 'Any social media users, if found guilty by the Authority for posting fake news on the social media platform shall be punished with imprisonment which may extend up to seven years and fine which may extend up to Rs 10 lakh or with both,' the Bill states. That 'Authority,' under Section 5 of the Bill, includes the Minister for Kannada and Culture Information and Broadcasting as the ex-officio Chairperson; one member each from the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council to be nominated by their respective Houses; two representatives from social media platforms appointed by the state government and a senior bureaucrat as Secretary. This Authority's mandate is to 'ensure complete ban on promotion and spread of fake news' including 'posting of contents which are abusive and obscene including anti-feminism and insult to the dignity of the female'; 'disrespect of sanatan symbols and beliefs' among others. The Authority is also tasked with ensuring 'only those content(s) are posted on the social media platform which are based on authentic research on the subjects related to science, history, religion, philosophy, literature.' This Bill comes in the face of an unequivocal ruling by the Bombay High Court last September that struck down as unconstitutional a key provision of the amended Information Technology (IT) Rules, 2021 which empowered the government to identify 'fake news' on social media platforms through a 'Fact Check Unit' (FCU). The Court had held that lack of judicial oversight in the Rules was unconstitutional. The Bill also makes the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita's provision on granting anticipatory bail inapplicable to offences under the proposed law. The Bill's descriptions of fake news and misinformation widen the scope of abuse and misuse. For instance, fake news is described under Section 2(i) of the Bill as 'purely fabricated content' and 'editing audio or video which results in the distortion of facts and/or the context.' Misinformation is defined as 'knowingly or recklessly making a false or inaccurate statement of fact.' The provision states that 'opinions, religious or philosophical sermons, satire, comedy or parody or any other form of artistic expression' are exempted from the definition. What constitutes 'artistic expression' is not defined in the Bill. In January 2024, Justice Gautam Patel of the Bombay HC had also struck down the Centre's IT rules for vague and overbroad terms such as 'fake,' 'false,' and 'misleading.' 'Vagueness and overbreadth are both linked to the concept of the chilling effect,' the ruling had said. In the landmark 2013 ruling in Shreya Singhal v Union of India, striking down 66A of the Information Technology Act that allowed blocking of content, the Court had emphasised that vague definitions cannot be justified to curb free speech. 'Information that may be grossly offensive or which causes annoyance or inconvenience are undefined terms which take into the net a very large amount of protected and innocent speech. A person may discuss or even advocate by means of writing disseminated over the internet information that may be a view or point of view pertaining to governmental, literary, scientific or other matters which may be unpalatable to certain sections of society. It is obvious that an expression of a view on any matter may cause annoyance, inconvenience or may be grossly offensive to some,' the Court had said. Maharashtra to form committee to make Bhiwandi ‘largest logistics hub in Asia'
The Maharashtra government will form a committee in order to realise the plan of making Bhiwandi the largest logistics hub in Asia. The committee will include officials from the Industries and Urban Development Department and Bhiwandi East MLA Rais Shaikh, Industries Minister Uday Samant announced in the Legislative Assembly. During the discussion in the Assembly, MLA Rais Shaikh drew the government's attention to developing Bhiwandi as a logistics hub. 'There is a need to appoint an IAS officer for the Bhiwandi Surrounding Notified Area. 60 villages and Bhiwandi city together have an area of 144 square kilometers, which is 30 percent of Mumbai. All the powers of local bodies are with the authority. Government land worth Rs 3,000 crore is being encroached upon and needs to be saved. If the government is serious about this issue, Bhiwandi will have the biggest share in making the state's $1 trillion economy,' said MLA Rais Shaikh in the Legislative Assembly. Responding to this, Industries Minister Uday Samant said that the largest logistics hub in Asia can be built in Bhiwandi. 'The government agrees to the technical difficulties such as appointing an IAS officer and taking back the powers of MMRDA. Therefore, accepting the request of MLA Rais Shaikh, we will form a committee of four or five people including officials from Industries, Urban Development, and we will move forward after finalising the policy,' announced Minister Uday Samant.

Renowned hypnotist B.V. Pattabhiram passes away aged 75
Acclaimed hypnotist, personality development coach, author and magician B.V. Pattabhiram died of a heart attack aged 75 at his residence in Hyderabad on Monday. He is survived by wife Jaya and son Prashanth. Bhavaraju Venkata Pattabhiram born in East Godavari of Andhra Pradesh, one of the 15 children to his parents, overcame a childhood disability to become a renowned performer, academic and author of over 30 books. Condolences poured in from different sections of the society after the sudden demise of the renowned personality development expert. Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu in a post on X said, 'The demise of Pattabhiram, who influenced many people with his personality development teachings and writings, is a great loss. I pray to God that his soul may rest in peace. I express my deepest condolences to his family members.' Former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy highlighted Pattabhiram's remarkable contributions, and noted that he gained widespread acclaim as a personality development expert, magician, and author.
