‘We're no underdogs': England set to challenge world champs Spain in Euro 2025 final

Malay Mail27-07-2025
BASEL, July 27 — England captain Leah Williamson admits that Spain are 'the best at what they do' but is confident her side can compete with the reigning world champions in today's Euro 2025 final.
'Tomorrow, we play a game against the world champions who continue to prove themselves over and over in the way that they play football,' Williamson told reporters at Basel's St Jakob-Park on the eve of the game.
'They are a fantastic footballing team, they are the best at what they do, and we are very much aware of that but we think we are pretty good in some areas as well.
'We need to be at our best to beat Spain but I think they will need to be at their best to beat us too.
'I think there is a lot of respect between the two teams, and I'd be hesitant to say we are underdogs in this scenario.'
England are hoping to retain the European Championship title they won on home soil in 2022, but the match is also a repeat of the 2023 World Cup final, in which Spain triumphed 1-0 in Sydney.
There is a growing rivalry between the nations, with England winning in extra time when they clashed in the quarter-finals at Euro 2022.
The sides have also already faced each other twice this year in the UEFA Nations League, with England winning 1-0 at Wembley in February.
Spain avenged that result by claiming a 2-1 victory in Barcelona at the beginning of last month, when Claudia Pina scored twice after Alessia Russo had given England the lead.
'We have played each other a lot over the last couple of years and I think you always have learnings from the games we have played,' said England coach Sarina Wiegman.
'Tomorrow is a new situation where we have an opportunity to hopefully take out their strengths a bit and exploit some of their weaknesses too.'
England have been sweating on the fitness of Lauren James for the final after she came off with an ankle injury during the last-four win over Italy, but Wiegman indicated that the winger is in line to feature today.
'We had 23 players on the pitch today and everyone came through,' said the Dutch coach.
Chloe Kelly and young striker Michelle Agyemang are pushing for starts after making impacts off the bench in the comeback wins against both Sweden and Italy in the last two rounds. Williamson, though, believes James has a lot to offer.
'We have a team of talented players. Lauren brings something slightly different, obviously having her available is the best-case scenario,' said the Arsenal centre-back. — AFP

Schick extends Bayer Leverkusen contract until 2030

Patrik Schick has scored 81 goals and provided 12 assists in 168 appearances in all competitions for Bayer Leverkusen. (EPA Images pic) MUNICH : Czech striker Patrik Schick has extended his contract with Bayer Leverkusen through to 2030, the Bundesliga club announced on Monday. 'Bayer 04 Leverkusen have extended the contract with Czech international Patrik Schick. The striker has signed a contract to 30 June 2030,' the club said in a statement on their website. Schick, 29, was an integral part of Leverkusen's unbeaten German domestic double-winning squad in the 2023/24 season. Since joining the Werkself in 2020, Schick has netted 81 times in 168 appearances in all competitions, as well as laying on 12 assists. Under the tutelage of now-departed coach Xabi Alonso, Schick contributed vital goals on numerous occasions as Leverkusen became the first club to win the Bundesliga without losing a match. He also lifted the German Cup and German Super Cup in 2024. 'I want to and will continue to contribute goals, that's my strength. In addition, I'm also looking to being a key part of the rebuild into a new team capable of winning trophies,' said Schick. The forward's decision to extend his contract bucks the trend of departures this summer from the Bundesliga runners-up. Alonso left to coach Real Madrid and has been followed out the door by star playmaker Florian Wirtz, as well as Jeremie Frimpong, Granit Xhaka and Jonathan Tah. 'With the rebuild in the next cycle at Bayer 04 we see Patrik as a motor of development,' said managing director of sport Simon Rolfes. 'He combines top-quality ability and an exceptional goal return with international experience and he will give the squad the necessary stability and structure.' Former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has replaced Alonso in the Leverkusen hot seat as the club starts down a new path. He and Schick will be supported in that project by the recent arrivals of centre-half Jarell Quansah from Liverpool, goalkeeper Mark Flekken from Brentford and German creative midfielder Malik Tillman.

The 21-year-old Germany international had undergone successful surgery, the club said in a statement yesterday without providing a timeline on his return. Bayern are already without playmaker Jamal Musiala, who sustained a fibula fracture with a broken and dislocated ankle at the Club World Cup last month, while leftback Alphonso Davies is out due to an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) tear. Bayern play VfB Stuttgart in the German Super Cup final on Aug 16 before beginning their Bundesliga title defence against RB Leipzig at home six days later.

Boyhood club honour Jota, Silva with new kit

Gondomar have dedicated their kit for this season to Diogo Jota and Andre Silva. (Instagram pic/Gondomar SC) PORTO : The boyhood club of Portuguese footballers Diogo Jota and Andre Silva have dedicated their kit for this season to the brothers who died in a car crash on July 3 in Spain. Fourth-tier Gondomar SC have imprinted pictures of Liverpool and Portugal forward Jota and his brother Silva, who played for Portuguese team Panafiel, on the front of their shirts. The top of the back of the shirts bears the two players' names under an infinity symbol. 'More than a jersey, a tribute eternal,' Gondomar SC, who play in the Campeonato de Portugal, said in a social media post. 'Because football is more than victories and goals, it's legacy, it's family, it's love for our land. 'Our new jersey brings in the great image of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, two sons of Gondomar who left us too soon, but who will live forever in the history of our club and our football. 'Every time our athletes put on this jersey, it's like stepping on the field with them.' Liverpool announced last month that their players will wear a 'Forever 20' emblem on their shirts and stadium jackets this Premier League season. After consultation with Jota's family, his No 20 shirt will be retired across all levels of the Anfield club, including the women's and academy teams. Jota and Silva grew up in Gondomar, a town on the outskirts of Porto.
