Lottery player finds lost winning ticket — thanks to family cat. ‘A miracle'

When a Connecticut man lost his lottery ticket, he 'didn't think too much of it.' However, fate had other plans. Looking 'for some superstitious fun' on Friday, June 13, Russell Ruff of Somers bought a Powerball ticket for the drawing the next day, Connecticut Lottery officials said in a July 7 news release. The ticket, though, vanished. 'We lost the ticket at home,' Ruff told lottery officials. 'It went behind a headboard.' The family didn't check the numbers for the Powerball drawing and life went on. But then, by a twist of fate, the family's 16-year-old cat 'somehow made its way behind a bed,' lottery officials said. To reach the cat, Ruff and his sons moved the bed. 'In the process, they found the cat—and the ticket,' lottery officials said. Ruff scanned the ticket, then rescanned it 'just to be sure' and learned he had won $150,000 on the 'long-lost ticket,' lottery officials said. 'It was a miracle,' the school bus driver said. Ruff missed the jackpot by one number, matching four of the five white balls and the Powerball, lottery officials said. 'His prize increased from $50,000 to $150,000,' as he added a Power Play option, lottery officials said. Somers is about an 80-mile drive northeast from Bridgeport. What to know about Powerball To score the jackpot in the Powerball, a player must match all five white balls and the red Powerball. The odds of scoring the jackpot prize are 1 in 292,201,338. Tickets can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times and price vary by state. Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online. Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Mega Millions winning numbers for July 8: Jackpot rises to $70 million

The Mega Millions jackpot rose to $70 million for the drawing on Tuesday, July 8 after no one matched all the winning numbers in the drawing on Friday, July 4. If someone matches all six numbers on Tuesday, they will have the option of a one-time cash payment of $31.3 million. There have been four Mega Millions winners this year, with the most recent being the June 27 win in Virginia of a jackpot of $348 million. Before then, on April 18, an Ohio player took home a $112 million jackpot, a lucky lottery ticket holder in Illinois took home a $344 million jackpot on March 25 and another lucky person hit the Mega Millions jackpot on Jan. 17 for $113 million. Here are the winning numbers from the Mega Millions drawing on Tuesday, July 8, 2025. The winning numbers for Tuesday, July 8 are 4, 6, 38, 44 and 62. The Mega Ball is 24. Winning lottery numbers are sponsored by Jackpocket, the official digital lottery courier of the USA TODAY Network. No one won the Mega Millions jackpot or any of the Match 5 prizes. To view the list of past winners, visit the Mega Millions website. To play the Mega Millions, you have to buy a ticket. You can do this at a variety of locations, including your local convenience store, gas station or even grocery store. In some states, Mega Millions tickets can be bought online. Once you have your ticket, you need to pick six numbers. Five of them will be white balls with numbers from 1 to 70. The gold Mega Ball ranges from 1 to 24. If you're feeling especially unlucky or don't want to go through the hassle of picking, you can ask for a "Quick Pick" or an "Easy Pick.' These options let the computer randomly generate numbers for you. Mega Millions tickets now include a built-in multiplier, which increases non-jackpot prizes by two, three, four, five, or 10 times. Before, players had to pay an extra dollar to add the "Megaplier.' Tickets can be purchased in person at gas stations, convenience stores and grocery stores. Some airport terminals may also sell lottery tickets. You can also order tickets online through Jackpocket, the official digital lottery courier of the USA TODAY Network, in these U.S. states and territories: Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia.
