Former racer J.D. Madan in top gear as para table tennis player
Madan was destined for bigger things when he became the National champion in the Esteem car section at the age of 26 in 2003. But tragedy put paid to that possibility. He met with a near-fatal road accident in 2007 in Mumbai that turned his life upside down. He was paralysed waist down.
Not one to be cowed down by circumstances, Madan soon found purpose in life.
In early 2021, Madan started playing table tennis, and as a veritable sportsperson found success in it as well. He went on to win medals in National para table tennis tournaments and is now ranked No.2 in India in Class I (wheelchair athlete).
Recently, he won multiple medals in ITTF events in Taipei (Future) and Kaohsiung (Challenger). In Kaohsiung, he won silver.
Madan is happy that para table tennis is growing in India, but feels it still has a long way to go.
Para TT in India, according to the 48-year-old, is growing but not yet at the international level. 'We have only Bhavina Patel and Sonalben Patel at the international level. Our grassroots structure is quite good, it is growing,' he says.
The difference between top countries and India who do well in para TT is the absence of a strong programme and exposure. 'Countries such as Korea, Japan and Thailand have a very strong programme for para table tennis. Actually, it's like a job. They give them a salary. They practice everyday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the National Training Centre. We have a long way to go,' says Madan.
Table Tennis Federation of India said Madan is making good efforts at providing the best for its paddlers. 'They are taking players internationally twice a year minimum,' he says.
A resident of Alwarpet, Madan loves the security the neighbourhood provides, but rues the complete absence of space for pedestrians.
Madan is not just a champion paddler. He has been active in ensuring the lives of differently abled persons change for the better.
He was part of an NGO called Disability Rights Alliance that has completed big projects with Chennai Corporation. 'One project that we associated was the beach (wooden) pathway for differently abled persons and for every other user on Marina and Besant Nagar Beaches,' he said.
On and off the sports field, Madan continues to make an impactful change.

Six-leg India Squash Tour, sanctioned by world body, begins next week
A six-leg India Squash Tour will begin next week, aimed at providing international exposure to the country's players. The 2025-26 season – that will witness events in Jaipur, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Ahmedabad and Delhi – will have Challenger tournaments with varying prize money. These events will be sanctioned by the Professional Squash Association (PSA), and will have a 24-player field with the top eight seeds getting a bye in the first round. It has been backed by HCL and is being conducted in partnership with the sports ministry and the Sports Authority of India. All events will offer equal prize money for men and women. The 2025-26 calendar includes Challenger 15k event in Chennai ($15,000 prize pool), Challenger 9k events in Jaipur and Mumbai ($9,000 each) and Challenger 6k events in New Delhi, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad ($6,000 each). Double Asian Games medallist Tanvi Khanna explained how the tour would help Indian players. 'I got injured after the Asian Games in 2023 and my ranking slipped to 400. However, when I returned to action, the PSA India tour was crucial in getting important ranking points for me,' said Tanvi, currently world number 69. Poncha also announced that Delhi will host the senior National Squash Championship at Major Dhyanchand National Stadium from August 23 to 28 of this year. 'We expect most of the top players to participate in the event,' Poncha said at Thursday's media interaction. Toor takes gold, Damneet impresses on day two of the Indian Open
National record holder and two-time Asian Games champion Tajinderpal Singh Toor expectedly took the shot put gold on the second and final day of the Indian Open athletics in Sangrur on Monday. Toor, one of the very few prominent names to turn up for the competition, managed a best throw of 19.51m in his fourth competition of the season. Toor, who is consistently battling injuries, is yet to cross 20m this season, his best being 19.74m at the National Games. In fact, he has not breached the mark since the 2024 Federation Cup in May, but was still good enough for the rest of the field. Also impressive was the 25-year-old Damneet Singh, winning the hammer throw with a personal best of 69.87m – just shy of the 2016 National record of 70.73m by Neeraj Kumar. Damneet, a silver medallist at the 2017 World under-18 championships and 2018 Asian under-20 championships, improved on his own previous best of 68.30m at the Federation Cup earlier this year. Mohd. Lazan VK also set a new personal best of 14.08 seconds to win the 110m hurdles. Among the women, JSW trainee Pranjali Patil was the only one to dip under 14 seconds to win the 100m hurdles in 13.66s while Niharika Vashisht of Punjab took the triple jump gold with 13.17m. 17-year-old para-athlete gets a prosthetic arm
Annamayya District Collector Sridhar Chamakuri sanctioned funds for para-athlete H. Shivani to get a prosthetic arm following an appeal by her. Shivani, an intermediate student representing the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Madanapalle, was born without a right arm. She bagged several gold medals in Shot-put and Javelin-Throw events held in Bangkok, Ahmedabad, and Bengaluru in recent months, besides showing her might at the National para-athletics. In recognition of her outstanding talent and perseverance, the Collector accepted her appeal by sanctioning ₹21,000, besides an additional ₹39,000 from the District Disability Rehabilitation Centre (DDRC) and Darshini Handicapped Welfare Society. The prosthetic limb was facilitated under the supervision of the Department for the Welfare of Differently Abled, Transgenders, and Senior Citizens. The initiative was grounded at the 'Praja Samasya Parishkara Vedika' (PGRS) at the Collectorate on Monday. Mr. Chamakuri said that the government would always be at the forefront to support and empower talented students like Shivani. He congratulated her and wished her good luck in academics and sports. Shivani observed that the support extended by the Collector would go a long way in balancing her studies and athletic career.
